None of those jokes are joking about a vicious act that victimizes and shames someone so irreparably that many are damaged for life. So there's that.

• I just think that comedians are always going to hit a sore spot with someone. If you are that sensitive about something in your life, dont put yourself in a situations where you might get offended. Like an effing comedy club.

I went to a Lisa Lapanelli show with a good friend of mine. We sat in the front so we got picked on a lot. So what? I never laughed so hard.

I don't think I've ever heard a dead baby joke either. Maybe I don't remember or live under a rock but I can't remember ever hearing one.

Um no.

The jokes AATB posted are not funny at all to me, either. Not even a little bit. Maybe I don't get the humor of that.

I can kinda relate to this. When we were in Key West, my in-laws took us to see a local musician they've been going to for like 10 or 15 years. The guy's schtick is that he sings sexually offensive songs and makes offensive jokes about pretty much everyone in the entire bar. I have NEVER laughed harder and the guy made jokes to my in-laws about my husband banging the shiiit about me in the next room on vacation. We were all in tears laughing.

However with that said... I dunno. Just because someone can make a joke about rape doesn't mean they should. What the Key West musician was doing would definitely be offensive to some people but his act is visible from the street, lol. No one is in there for very long if they don't like it.

Add me to this train as well.
I don't find them funny and I think they're horribly inappropriate. That being said, almost any joke out there has the possibility to hurt/offend someone. Like someone else said, do your homework about the comedian you're wanting to see. If they talk about topics often that make you uncomfortable, you don't have to see them.

When it comes to a joke made in the midst of friends or even a small group of people you don't know (on a non performance situation) I think they're never appropriate because you never know what the people around you have been through.

I honestly don't like "jokes" or comedians. They make me feel awkard cause I really just don't find crap like that very funny. I don't much care what the joke is about, I just am not really a fan of comedians in that effect, it just seems like they're all cocky and full of themselves and 75 percent of the time its boring as all hell. I prefer laughing at shows with a plot, not just one liners by a dude on a stage.
• My favorite comedian is Bill Engvall. He cracks me up so much.
• Am I the only one who hasn't heard a rape joke? I just don't see how you could make that funny or why you'd even go there. I think comedians just try to push it farther and farther, trying to make a joke out of more taboo things. And there must be enough people out there that find it funny or they'd stop doing it.
• I don't think it's fair to assume that all women who are the victim of sexual assault are going to be offended by any and all rape jokes. I'm black and I think jokes about black people are hilarious. I'm a woman and I think jokes about women are hilarious.

How is Dane Cook's rape joke (which was funny, and that will be the last time I ever say anything that came out of that dude's mouth was funny) offensive?

This comes down to knowing what you're going to see. If I have an issue with swears, I'm not going to see Carlin or Lewis Black. If I have an issue with racial humor, I'll keep my ass away from Chappelle and Kat Williams. If I don't like gay jokes, I'm not going to go see Tosh.

Exactly. He tells a lot of gay jokes too and I am sure he pisses a lot of people off with those as well.

While I don't think it would be hilarious for a woman to get gang raped (wtf?) I think some people were probably still laughing so he took it too far. I agree if you are sensitive, you should just never fucking go to a comedy club. Seriously, they are lewd and offensive, and fucking hilarious, but obviously people have different humor. Especially with Tosh, he has no line.

Some people think racist jokes are funny, but that was a pretty fucking sore spot in our history, just like rape is a pretty fucking awful thing. Unfortunately, that is just what comedy is, making fun of things that really shouldn't be funny, but for some reason, we all laugh.

I also get this attitude from fans of Tosh or other so-called offensive comedians that they laugh at these rape jokes, or puke videos, because Tosh is the one coming out with a lot of it first, or at least most prominently, and it's not what people are used to as being funny. So therefore, THINKING that it's funny, is somehow the "cool" thing or it's "edgy" or "brilliant" or you're on some different level of understanding funny things and that gives you extra cool points or someshit.

I can understand that - but I also don't think I should have to research all the comedians who are performing at a comedy club if I decide to go with friends one night. And God forbid one of them cancel so the slot is filled with a guy who's going to make jokes about gang banging. Kwim? I mean, yeah, comedians can be offensive and I can concede most people should know that going in when they show up at a comedy club, but these chicks went to see Dane Cook knowing that he makes offensive jokes. They weren't prepared for a different comedian to point to a woman in the audience and say it would be hilarious if she was repeatedly raped right there in front of everyone.

I also don't like the argument that it's because most or many rape victims are damaged for life. I can't quite put it into words why it bothers me but I get a weird feeling about it. Like I should be ashamed instead of laughing at a rape joke.

I am kind of the same. I have an irrational hate for women stand up comedians for some reason. They are never funny. And I never like that weird transition where stand-ups go, like "So what's up with bears man?" when they were just talking about Christmas dinner.

But I did see Kevin James and Ray Romano together and it was freaking awesome. But I love them from TV. There are really no "comedians" that I like or would want to go out of my way to see that I know of.

musu- Mitch Hedburg is also my favorite comedian. In college, I wore black the day he died.

I'm on the fence about Tosh. I don't like disgusting jokes, and I don't really find many of his jokes about women that funny. He does those types of jokes because he loves taking things too far. I think he gets a kick out of hearing a gasp instead of a laugh from the audience. Some stuff is funny, other stuff is pretty horrible. But when he's being self-deprecating? It's HILARIOUS!

• Okay so I'mma bounce now, because there is some straight humor-eliteism going on in hurr that's chapping my ass. Just because you don't find something funny doesn't mean the ones who do are trying to be "cool" or aren't "sophisticated" in their humor. It means YOUR ASS doesn't find it funny. That's all. I don't understand how people find sh*t like Friends or Seinfield funny but I'm not going to call them pedestrian-minded because I don't understand their sense of humor. The f*ck, people. You can find a rape joke not funny or offensive without making sweeping statements about the type of people who do.

Comedians shouldn't have to go about minding what they say because you might have delicate sensibilities. If what they say is offensive enough (see Michael Richards) then society will lash back at them and they'll understand they went too far, and not to do it again. I'm sure Tosh learned that from the backlash to his rape joke, because I'm fairly sure this is the first time I've seen him even begin to apologize for anything from his act.

If you don't think it's funny, pick your ass up from the theater and leave. If you're that upset, then go ask the manager for your money back on account of being offended. Don't be surprised though if he laughs when you go "Well I was here to see Dane Cook and his offensive humor, but Tosh was even more offensive and, well, I only enjoy offensive humor to a certain degree."
