I did end up moving the horse being chased the worst - in March. Now I pay board and the horse is several hours away. And, I pay pricey rent so I have barn/pasture use.

Landlord refused to allow me to change the fence situation.

So pay board elsewhere and STOP paying for the barn/pasture use. And then MOVE when you're effing lease is up.

AND I'm pretty sure it's illegal for your landlord to evict you for calling the authorities on someone, you know, BREAKING THE LAW. But I'm not a lawyer, so there's that.

  • I've got one last thing to say about this whole Steffi is a complete psycho thing, and then I'm done.

If your animals are in a situation you feel is dangerous for them, it is completely up to you to fix said situation and ensure their safety to the best of your ability. However, it DOES NOT give you the right to abuse, injure, or torture SOMEONE ELSE'S ANIMALS to keep yours safe. Move the fvck out. Board your horses elsewhere. Call the cops about the dog or find a reasonable, humane solution to keep him off the property. But FFS, you're TORTURING an animal. You're fvcked up.

No, but as someone else mentioned, you CAN put chicken wire around the bottom to prevent the dog from ducking under the bottom rung into the pasture. Or, since she talks about it terrorizing her horses at night, here's a novel concept: PUT THEM IN THE BARN AT NIGHT.

The way the lease is written there is no reduction if I do not have horses as I still had use of the barn/pasture. It's an all in one price.

FWIW, my one horse's board is more than our car payment. They're not cheap to board, and I have two older special horses who can't just go to the local pasture barn and be okay. Mare was moved to her old home, over 2 hours away, where she can be cared for.

And, *that* property is completely fenced with no climb so that dogs can't get in. ;)

Steffi - I'm really unclear as to why you've involved your lawyer in this and not the cops, and why after you've tried to resolve things with your landlord, and he's refused, you STILL haven't called the cops or animal control. Honestly? The only thing I can think is that you've got something going on at your own place that isn't entirely legal and you don't want to involve the authorities. Seriously, bear mace makes no sense.

ETA: Also, it frankly shocks me that you'd resort to this. You've always seemed like someone who actually cares about animals (aside from the whole euthanizing your cats upon your death thing, where I actually sort of saw where you were coming from). I get you don't like dogs, but I would think your love of animals overall would make you have a somewhat more rational reaction than attacking it with mace. I don't like cats. Does that mean I go around taking extreme action when one scratches me? No. Because overall, I like animals and don't want to hurt them.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: FFF : Yes, I would. Dogs chasing stock can cause some pretty serious accidents. I've had two friends lose horses to dogs chasing them, them slipping/hitting something, and having catastrophic injuries. My mare is older with some issues that make her semi/mostly retired. She deserves to live out her dotage in peace, in my pasture, enjoying not doing much of anything. Chasing my horses while being ridden did cause me to get tossed three times, with no injuries, but I pay out a nice chunk of money for a farm and there's nothing I can do to make the farm useable for me because it's a civil dispute. Not to mention the chasing of the cats, the vet bills from that, mauling me, chasing my horse in his vet exam yesterday, chewing stuff on my porch even with my gate up, crapping on my front walk. Those things piss me off, but chasing stock is an offense that should not be tolerated. FWIW, I offered to pay a trainer to come out to work with the dog on the horse chasing. The owners declined. I'm pretty angry at the neighbors and the landlord that would rather be friends with her neighbors/BFF than protect her tenant.

  • Didn't you say that other neighbors hate this dog too? Why don't you just fucking call animal control anonymously if you are so worried about your landlord?

  • I thought you said in the Saturday thread that it was too hard to put a fence on 14 acres of land....

My parents have a neighbor down the street who is a lazy ass and despite having no yard, just opens the door to let her dog out to do its business.  The dog obviously meanders his way to my parents' yard, which is a lot bigger.  He frequently chases the neighbor's cat into the trees, tears up my mom's garden and knocked over the small memorial we have for the family cat once.  When it got to be enough recently, she called the police.  They came quickly, found the woman and made sure she acquired her animal and brought it inside.  They also reminded her about the leash law.  Was this neighbor happy the police were called? No, and she called my mom a nice long list of choice names, but her animal wasnt harmed just because she isnt a diligent pet owner.  Seriously, dont kill this dog, dont dream about killing this dog, dont wish someone else would kill the dog.  You seem to be so nonchalant about animals being killed.  It really disturbs me.

Look, there comes a point in a situation where you make a choice that moves you from being someone the audience can sympathize with to the villian.  Think Glenn Close from Fatal Attraction; I felt bad for her until she started boiling bunnies and going BSC.  I can sympathize with your situation up until the pointed you MACED a DOG.  That is where you went wrong and should own that as there were other more constructive ways of handling the situation. That didn't involve MACING a DOG.

That's what no one seems to be reading here - I offered to pay for a trainer, I took the dog home, I took the dog to the BFF/Landlord. The dog was a civil matter and on the property I live on he is welcome at all times. The landlord thinks the horse chasing is funny.

I then consulted an attorney after my cat had injuries, dog chased horse unmercifully into a lather, I got thrown, and I got knocked down going out to my car on my way to work a few times. I desperately wanted out of my lease and wanted to leave.

As it stands, we are out next month.

Yeah me either. I honestly think she is a pathological liar. Her story keeps changing. This is a terrible fucking story to come up with but I really hope for the dogs sake that she is just making up or embellishing on this one.
  • I also think its hilarious that this is supposed to be a golden retriever that mauled her. Poor thing was probably just super excited and wanted to play. Golden retrievers are some of the least aggressive breeds out there.
