On the le-a thing...I actually read an interesting article about this on baby names wizard (I've been reading her blog lately for obvious reasons). It talks about racial connotations and what not, I think it's well written: http://www.babynamewizard.com/archives/2009/10/ledasha-legends-and-race-part-oneAnd snopes marks the ledasha story as "undetermined": http://www.snopes.com/racial/language/le-a.asp

Very interesting article. I stand firm in my belief that they are Urban Legends.

I can tell you for sure, though that there is a football player for Wake Forest named Gelo Orange. And that makes me smile.

I thought of a stupid made up name, not even a given name. Ke$ha. Stupid song, stupid girl, stupid name. In my house we call her "Kedollarsignha".

Is that the Tic Toc wench? That song annoys me...
• Apparently, on my mom's side, "Christmas" is a pretty common family middle name. Usually, the combinations aren't too bad, i.e. Anne Christmas

But after my mom was born, (as my grandmother tells it) an elderly relative was indignant that she had not named my mom Mary Christmas.
My dad's middle name (and he's a junior) is Gerson. He hates it and wouldn't tell me what his middle name was for a long time as a kid. I love Madison for a girl if we have one but I was thinking of spelling it Madisyn. Then I see all those name things you can buy (keychains, mugs, etc.) and wonder if I should leave it Madison so she can buy the stuff. I have never been able to buy anything with my name because they never have it.
Posted by Shawnee11507
I have a completely normal, correctly spelled name and I still wasn't able to buy those personalized things because my name has never been in the top 40 (or top 100, even) girls' names. (Also, it is technically unisex, but for the last 50 years 95% of people with my name have been female.)

That said, spelling any name with a y if the y isn't at the end of the name is a really, really bad idea. Everyone will still spell it Madison and she'll have to correct them with the effed up spelling. (The name is NMS anyway.)

My friend was a special ed major in college and had a guy in her program named Edward that she and her friends dubbed Special Ed. Then they found out he went by Ted and started calling him Special Ted. Not to his face.

No weird names really in my family. But when my parents started dating my mom somehow brough up the fact that she hated the name Howard. My dad's response was, "Howard is my middle name." True story. He was named after his father (John) and his maternal uncle (Howard).

• I'm late here, but thank you to all of those who pointed out the urban legendiness (I made that up) of names like l-ea, etc. I try to explain that to people every time I hear those stories and they look at me like I was the one who named my kid l-ea =)

I am absolutely sick to death of people adding unnecessary letters to kids names, or purposely mispelling a name to make it different. It just makes it annoying! I had a patient who named her kid Kalob (Caleb). We have a Heavin (heaven) right now. They put the I in because they 'wanted it to rhyme with Kevin, the dad's name.' Well it already rhymes! Now it looks like it should be pronounced hee-vin!

We have a lovely little girl with a lovely first name. Problem is that her middle name is Analy (pronounced anna-lee). I really need to have a talk with her parents...

We have some lovely old-tymey names in our family that I actually really like--Minnie Pearl, Lillie Pearl, Georgia Mae, Daisy... I really like Daisy but it would sound weird with my new last name.

The daughter of one of the Beach Boys went to my high school: Summer Love

FI and I each have a great-grandfather Aloysius. We did a quick check when we started dated to make sure we weren't somehow related. :P My G-Grandfather is Aloysius Jacobus Germanlastname. Quite a mouthful.

I know a lot of trendy namers which annoys me but, hey, not my kids! My name is a little weird, Moira, pronounced "More-ah". It is the Anglicized spelling of the Irish name Máire. The Anglicized version is supposed to be pronounced Moyra, but my parents pronounced it one of the Irish ways instead. So when I go to the UK or Ireland and say my name, people say "More-ah" but if they see my name written down they always call me Moyra. I answer to both now.

I used to know a girl named Redbird. Crazy hippie parents and I think her father was one of the guys who came up with LSD back in the '70s.

• Stack it is so weird because I'm Moira/More-ah with a sister Meghan/meh-gan) and my dad's sister's husband has neices that are sisters named Moira/Moyra and Meagan/Mee-gan. Bizarre!

And, not bizarre except to me as a kid, I was always confused about my grandmother's 4 sisters (Margaret, Kathleen, Eileen, Regina) becaus she always talked about her sister Peggy. I had no idea as a kid that it was a nickname for Margaret.

Margaret - /> Maggie -> Meggie -> Peggy

• My dad works with a guy named Harry Wolff, I taught a student whose name was Unique and her mother was Special, and (my favorite one) I had a female teacher in high school whose first name was Stephen. I did not like her, at all...she had probably taken years of abuse which resulted in her crappy demeanor.
My cousin has a student named "L-ia" but apparently you're supposed to pronounce the dash mark (which is just not pronounceable). So when you say her name it's "ledashia".
Posted by evabee
It's not a dash though, it's a hyphen. I have one in my name. If anyone ever tried to call me "sarahdashjean" i would smack them in the head.

• Yeah, I'm way late, but I thought of a few...

-- Our ex- Governor: Tommy Thompson
-- An ex-coworker: Steven Stevens
-- A kid that played football with my brother at his highschool: M-Jay (pronounced Em-Jay)
-- An ex-coworker Cami O LastName (No middle name, just O... as in Cameo...)
-- A little girl in my neices class (I saw her name on their Holiday Program flyer this past December): Autumn Rain
-- A cousins daughter: Maci Mae (not the worst, but its just... kinda redundant...)

That's all I can think of right now...

I never understood why someone wold name their child with the same (or very, very similar) first and last names.
