Saturday!

Re: Saturday!

  • Was going to, but I dont like to leave the lobster tails for 2 days in the fridge and I HATE going to costco on Saturdays so I went lastnight after work instead. Just as well cause its a mess out right now and I assume costco is a mad house right now.
  • Good to know Nebb, I might have to ask when the fish guy is in Burlington, it would be worth going then.
  • Nebb and Number - you can always go to the meat guys and ask if they have any of the roadshow stuff that's still frozen. We always get the crablegs and lobster tails from them and that way we can throw them in the freezer without worrying or having to eat them right away.
  • Does anyone have a recommendation for a nail treatment that might help keep my nails from peeling?  They're strong enough that they don't break, but they peel from the tips, and it's really irritating.

Would taking prenatal vitamins help? My nails used to peel and if I remember correctly got way better when I started taking prenatals, I dont take themany more but my nails are fine now.
  • Morning. I got up around 9 thanks to my mom texting me nonstop, but didn't go to bed until close to 1am (waiting to make sure H got to his mom's ok since he got caught in rain/snow). Now I have a massive headache, I guess from just being overtied or something.

Today I have lots of work to do for my class. Mostly grading but I also have to re-read a book to prepare for discussions. I have to go to work tomorrow, so today is my only real day off.
  • Nebb, I've considered trying prenatals.  Maybe I should.

Koda, I've been taking biotin for awhile (like...almost a year) and I don't think it's done a darn thing for me.  Nail polish just chips where the nail is peeling and the chunks of nail peel off with the polish.

  • Good morning!  I'm having a glass of milk and a few tortilla chips for breakfast.  Breakfast of champions, I tell you.  My friend is coming over in about an hour and we're going to go run--she's training for a full marathon, and I'm training for the half, so it's really nice to have someone to run with (even though I ditch out on her about halfway through her runs since she has to do so much more).

Other than that, I don't think I have any plans today.  H is at work, but his 8 day vacation starts tomorrow, so I'm super pumped to actually spend a weekend day with him tomorrow.  Maybe I'll run out to the grocery store so I can make something yummy for dinner.
  • I had a protein shake and a small bowl of left over basmati rice for breakfast lol
  • Good morning.  It's icky outside here now.  Snowy and windy.  I'm about to go make myself an egg sandwich for lunch.  I have zero plans for the day except to work out at some point this afternoon.

JK - My nails did that too.  And nail polish just came off with the peeling nail.  Prenatal vitamins have made a world of difference.
  • Good morning, ladies.

It's snowing lightly, and only supposed to get up to 22* F.  Good day to be at work, I suppose.  DH put two giant pork shoulders on the smoker at 3:30 this morning.  They're going to be awesome.  Our Costco has a seafood fair one weekend a month - they have giant salmon fillets, crab legs, lobster tails.  I need to find out when the next one is so I can make the lobster mac & cheese recipe I pinned this week.

  • J, my nails always did that too.  They haven't for the past few weeks. The obvious answer is to get yourself knocked up. Or, you know, take prenatal vitamins. ;)
  • Prenatals it is, I suppose.

What is it in them that helps?  The extra folic acid?  Can you GET just folic acid?  I already have a multi that I like, I don't really want to change things up a lot.

  • Yeah, it's the folic acid I think, and you can just buy it separately.  I was taking an extra 400mg at first (on top of the 800mg in my prenatal), but it gave me a stomach ache.  Fair warning you may want to take it at night?
  • Interesting.  Well, I need to see my doctor again anyway, so I guess I'll ask her what she thinks too.

  • For my Canadian friends...one of my friends is taking a pre-natal that is a prescription from her doctor...so that way it is covered under insurance!  I can ask her the name again if you are interested in it...apparently there is a morning pill and an evening pill.
  • I've heard of rx prenatals, but they're usually only for women who are high-risk pregnancies, I thought. I dunno, my prenatals aren't too expensive. ($14 for 120 I think?)

J, the only other thing that's different between my prenatals and my old multi, if I remember, is the extra iron.  But I don't think that would affect nails, right?

It's probably PregVit, Number. My doctor offered it to me, and I think I'll take her up on it once my Materna bottle is finished. Those things aren't cheap. :(

ETA: I don't think they're only for high-risk pregnancies, Steph. I told my dr. that mine were making my stomach upset, and she automatically offered the prescription ones. They're apparently easier to handle, stomach-wise.
  • Well, it might?  Because I know iron (and B-12, but that's not really relevent) deficient anemics often have nail changes.  But I'm not sure if it's directly related to the iron, or a secondary effect somehow.

  • It is Preg Vit...

My friend on it might be high risk (she is obese) or it could be because she will be doing IVF (she is single, will be using a donor) but she said her doctor said anyone could have them.
  • PregVit?  I would boycott those based on just the name alone.

J & K - I had good luck using Nail Envy - its a clear nail strengthener. They have different formulas for different concerns. You put it on once then reapply every few days. It's a bit pricey (maybe $12ish?) but a bottle lasts forever. Lots of nail places carry it, as do the hair product places in the mall.

ETA: You have to be diligent in putting on the new coats and removing it about once a week (sometimes more) or else it will just peel off like normal nail polish.
  • Hi ladies, snow here in Western NY.  Totally lazy day.  My college kids just called me and told me they are coming to visit me today.  So much for not making dinner tonight!  Oh well, I have been missing them so this is a great surprise!
  • I don't think Steph was saying they're only for high-risk pregnancies.  I think she was saying in the US, there is a specific kind that insurance can cover, but only for high risk pregnancies.  In the US, most insurance companies will not cover things that are available OTC unless there is a damn good reason.

<div>oh yeah, that make sense.  </div><div>Here they won't cover OTC at all (well my plan won't, so for example my doc can't script me for regular tylenol, I mean he can, but it won't be covered. When I first starting teaching it was part of our plan but they cut it my second or third year teaching) but if there is a type that does require a prescription it is covered. Like yeast infection meds, same thing...if my doc gives me a script for the prescription stuff, it gets covered, if I buy the drug store stuff, I pay for it. </div>

<div>This is super late but I'm pretty severely anemic and I try to look at my fingers/nails to detect really low iron levels. I don't know if it's from the lack of iron or from low oxygen levels due to my PAVM's, but if my nails turn blue-ish I'm probably due to go to the hospital and have my iron levels checked. Do your nails peel less if they are super short?</div>
  • Yeah, that's how it is in the US too for most insurance plans.

Do you get horizontal ridges in your nails, too, at all?  My mom always did.

Anyway, no, the length doesn't seem to matter.  I mean, I think they peel a bit more as they get longer, but they still peel a considerable amount when they're short.

</div><div>Yeah, I didn't ever connect the ridges to anything, I just thought I had stupid nails. ;) Do vitamins make you sick? I'm supposed to take a boat load of iron every day but it makes me really sick. Like, vomit sick. Usually if it gets really bad I go with dad and we have an "IV iron infusion" date.

    </div>
  • I think iron tends to make most people nauseous!  Some multis make me nauseous, but taking them with food (like you should anyway) helps.  I need to go get my iron checked again (I forgot to ask my doctor about it before I got my labwork done because I suck).
