How many dresses did you try on?

I was reading an article today saying you should never try on more than ten gowns. I have easily tried on at least 20 so far. The main issue is I kept trying on these dresses I thought I wanted and they just weren't working. I went to two boutiques so far and at each one I tried on many very lacy, somewhat poofy dresses. Neither consultant thought to say, "Maybe you should try a different style." or even made suggestions. Finally I saw another girl trying on a much simpler dress and requested to try it on as well. It worked much better for me so now I made appointments at two other boutiques with that style in mind (it wasn't 'the one') but that means I will be trying on even more dresses because I am essentially starting fresh.

I was just wondering how many dresses other brides have tried on?

I easily tried on 30 gowns.  I had the problem of trying on too many gowns that were very similar also.  I finally figured out that was the problem, and went back and tried more on in varied styles.
  • One.  Crazy right??   I couldn't wrap my head around paying more for my dress than I am for my wedding "dinner" (we're doing very small only 20 people), so I went non-traditional route and thought outside the box.  I looked online at formal gowns at big dept stores (macy, dillard, etc) and found a ralph lauren that I loved.  I knew a similar style worked for me from past dress experience and knowing what flatters my body.  This dress was a little more daring than all the "ideas" I had, so I wasn't sure.  BUT It was on sale in my size, so I went for it.  Worst case scenario: it doesn't work and I return it...and am out shipping of $10.  Big woop!  I just got it yesterday and it's perfect!!!!

I have heard SO many stories of ladies finding their dress and having it be not at all what they thought it would be.  Have an idea of your style, but keep it loose!  You may say "I want lace", but the shape could be totally different than what you thought.  If you have areas you're concerned about, tell them (like if your chest is smaller and you want to accentuate) Let those consultants do their job and find things that flatter you!

I think that "never try on more than 10 gowns" is for people who know exactly what they want and what will WORK...and not everyone knows that.  Good luck!

I tried on more than I could count, because I loved the process.  And, in the end, I bought the very first one I tried on, that I saw in a magazine.  For me it worked out better that way because I compared every gown to that first one and couldn't find one to top it.  Plus, during the time it took me to try all of them on, we decided on the look and feel of our wedding and I wanted to be sure that the gown fit what we envisioned.

It sounds like you are well on your way.  Enjoy the process and good luck!

  • I probably tried on like 30-40, but I also went to 6 stores looking and tried on anywhere from 2-10 dresses per store.

The best salon I went to (and where I ended up getting my dress) let me and my sisters comb through all their dresses. We put a little hanger tab on the ones I wanted to try on. The consultant then made suggestions here and there based on what I had picked for myself - some outside my comfort zone, and some right up my alley. It was great though, because I didn't have to wait for someone else to figure out what I liked.

Maybe you can ask around and try to find one that lets you do the picking.

One. I ordered online in a style I liked.

Trying on dresses isn't for me.

  • @PDKH - Every boutique I went to let me pick dresses, and I didn't like any that I picked so it just seemed like a good consultant would have caught on and suggested I try a different style. Instead they just had me try on 15 dresses that all looked the same! I said I hated a dress and one consultant actually went and got the same dress but with sleeves for me to try. I guess I could have caught on quicker too, but I was so set on lace! Ultimately I had to see a dress on someone else to realize I might like it on me.

It's so interesting how people differ so much on how many dresses they've tried. I'm hoping now that I think I know what I want that I won't need to try on 100 dresses! The one I like I was pretty lukewarm about but my mom really liked, so I'm hoping we can find something we agree on!
  • Around 10.

  • I tried about 5 different dresses and ended up with the first one i tried on. I sort of wish I would've tried more. I love my dress but don't know if its as flattering as it could be.

I tried on probably close to 20 gowns. I was lucky to have good people and good consultants- at least at the second place I went to. I knew I wanted an A line dress, but I did try on a fit and flair and a drop waist to make sure. This was at the insistance of my sister and my consultant. It helped to see those dresses because even though they weren't right, it helped solidify in my mind that an A line was for me.

My FSIL tried on close to 100 dresses and went to six boutiques. She was telling me the experience when she was shocked to hear I found my dress after only two appointments. It turned out she thought she wanted something way different from the dress she ended up with. She kept trying to find that perfect dress in her mind that she wouldn't let in any room for other options. When she finally dropped her pre conceived notions of what her dress would look like, she found her dress.

So moral of the story- don't be afraid to try something new.

  • i tired on 13 dresses those were also the only dresses she had for me to try on i am plus size i did make an apt for this weekend to try on some diffrent gowns from diffrent designers and this store carrys plus. this will be my second and last apointment to try on gowns. at the first place i really love one of them but its more of the big pick up bottom but the top looks amazing. but i want to try on some different styles
  • I believe I tried on ten dresses. I bought my dress at the second shop.
I almost bought the first dress I tried on. It was beautiful everyone cried and I was beaming however, I had another dress in my head that I've seen before and I felt like the dress I had on I've seen a million times before. The second shop I went to I tried a similar dress to the one I was swooning over and purchased that one. It was great because that shop also had the same dress I almost bought and it lost it's magic compared to that one. I actually cried, and I felt beautiful and unique.
  • 9 dresses, all different styles, 45 minutes and ordered the first one.

I tried on probably close to 50. I went into my last appointment afraid that I would never find "the one" and that it didn't exist in my price range. But I just had to try to remain optimistic that it was out there. I was afraid that I was trying on too many, and didn't want to be "that bride" that tries on tons of dresses. But my sister reassured me that I would know when it was the one, and it doesn't matter how many dresses I have to try on to get there. When I put on the one, I didn't have some crying moment, but I did get a little teary when I realized it was the one. Everyone was standing around me telling me how beautiful I looked, and it was just perfect. I really could see myself getting married in it. It just felt right, and that's how I knew without a doubt that it was the one. I thought that I would have to agonize over the decision and "sleep on it" and all that stuff, but not so for me. Everyone has a different experience and tries on a different number of dresses. No one way is the right way to do it. Just do what is right for you until you find the dress!
  • I tried on 6. Dress number 6 was the one I ordered. My consultant was very good. Everytime I tried a dress she asked me what I liked and didnt like. She knew her stock well and got it done in just 6 dresses.

  • I tried on 5 that my mom and I picked out. I loved one but it wasn't right...so my consultant pulled out one last dress. It was lace and I was so scared to try it...I didn't want lace at all. Needless to say, she was brilliant and that is my dress. I am so excited to wear it for my love and my friends
  • One shop, one trip, about 15-20 dresses. I bought the last one I tried on.

  • I did a lot of online looking first; made an appointment, tried on 2 dresses and bought the first one I tried on.  She brought out 3 (the one I absolutely loved, one similar to it, and one completely different, but I liked all 3).  I tried on my favorite first, then the one that was completely different (my MOH liked that one better), and didn't need to try on the 3rd.  I knew the first one was 'the one'.  My consultant was wonderful.  I had no intention of wearing a veil but she brought out one that was beautiful, fingertip-length, and matched the dress perfectly...I bought it!  But I know the process is different for everyone.  Just keep trying them on till you find the perfect one - YOUR dress.  It's your day...love the dress you'll be wearing!
  • I probably tried on about 6.  I did all the trying on by myself and sent pics to my fam and friends since they were all living in a different state. I ended up getting one that I loved when I saw it online that I requested to try on.

None. I saw a dress online that I loved, that was marked down from $1300 to $300. So, I went ahead and bought it. I'm getting it altered because the size wasn't right but I do love the dress. Also, I always thought that I hated "mermaid" gowns but the dress I saw was a mild mermaid silhouette and I think it's great. Just goes to show "the one" may not be what you had first intended.
  • I tried on about 10.  I had picked out maybe half a dozen that I really liked online, and the salon picked out a couple more similar ones.  The one I had liked best online turned out to be my favorite, and I liked it so much I didn't bother looking anywhere else.
  • I tried on around 30, I think. I went to five places (in two different cities) to include both my mom, FMIL, and best friend. I sort of forced myself to stop looking after that because there was one I liked the best and I didn't want to go crazy trying to top it.

More importantly, I would advise to not worry so much about trying on a certain number (or NOT trying on a certain number). It takes different amounts of time and dresses for everyone I've talked to, and I think you just have to be honest with yourself about how the process is going for you. I would guess the article you read was trying to stop brides from making themselves crazy (or being bridezillas and forcing people to go on multiple appointments). But there's nothing wrong with trying on lots of dresses until you find the right one!
  • One shop.
    One dress.

The one I'd already selected online, went in and told the consultant; "Pull this style number for me please.  That's the one I want."

It just happened to look good on me too.
  • I tried on about 12-15 dresses, but ended up getting the first one, in the first and only salon I went to.

  • Five.  Tried on 3, didn't even come out in #4, and bought #5.  Actually, it might have been only 4 that I tried on.  Whatever.  It probably helped that I hated the material of the first three.  Made it easier to know when I tried mine on that I absolutely loved it.  Only went to one salon.
  • I actually went dress shopping yesterday for the first time. I booked an appointment at a boutique that I heard good things about - I probably tried on between 15-20 dresses. I went in with a very open mind and got the people I brought with me choose some dresses for me to try on. It didn't take very long to narrow down the style. I am having a destination wedding and I knew that I didn't want a lot of "poof" at the bottom of the dress or a very big train. I ended up picking my dress 2.5 hours later (I think it was about the 5th dress I tried on originally), which is a gorgeous lace MoriLee dress - I didn't think I wanted lace but it made everyone including myself cry. To be honest though, everyone cried when I first put it on but I wasn't sold on it..when I got down to my two "yes I like" dresses I still didn't cry or feel like it was the one until they put a veil on me...I didn't think I wanted a veil either, but it did the trick! It pulled everything together and made up my mind.

The consultant told me right off the bat that when I'm going through the dresses keep the "yes I like" dresses in the change room and take away the definite no's and maybe's. I avoided going to other stores because I didn't want to confuse myself. Even when I left the store I knew I was happy with the dress but I was thinking "is there something else out there that I might have missed?" but now that I've slept on it I know it's my dress. Good luck finding yours! :)

  • I tried on five but I guess that's because knew what I knew exactly what I wanted to look like for my wedding even before I got engaged, however the process is fun. Good luck!!!

  • I tried on four. My MOH and I went in and clipped tags to the dresses we liked and my consultant pulled a few as well. I tried on one that had a zipper back and felt it entirely unflattering, so we nixed all the ones that had zipper backs and stuck strictly to corset. I tried on one that I liked, but it was plain, so there was an identical one except beading, which I liked more (these were two the my MOH and I picked), my consultant pulled out a fourth dress, which had more pouf and a longer train than I had thought I wanted... and that's the one in my closet right now.

Seriously, let the consultant pick out a few dresses for you to try on, they know their stuff.

  • I tried on around 5-10. I really don't remember. I only went to two places. The dress I ended up picking was the first one I saw when I walked in and I loved it and knew I had to try it on. My mom loved it and noticed it when we first walked in as well.

  • 10? Maybe?

If you're disappointed with what you're trying on- try a different style! Don't wait for someone to suggest it!

Your day- your way. Be as open minded as possible. The dress that was picked out jokingly just might be the one!
