Paging @KnotPorscha, @KnotJackie

So, the PSA thread on Wedding Party got deleted. And I have discovered that I cannot start a new discussion on Knottie Help on mobile, which is beyond annoying.

So I'm gonna ask it here: What. Happened? A user was banned, then unbanned, then re-banned. And all of it was done with NO commentary from you. Just *poof* gone. Along with all her posts, some of which were helpful.

We deserve an answer. If a user was flagrantly abusing the system, we deserve to know that, and for her to be held out as an example of what NOT to do.

You need to work on your transparency. And you need to be pro-active, not re-active. You need to have someone (like, you know, mods) who can shut down out of control threads, who can call out users, who can ban vendors. I understand it's KP's job to do all of that. I think we can all agree that unless we bring it to her attention, she doesn't get those things done. She's one person and there's too much going on on the boards for her to monitor them all efficiently.

We are supposed to be your target audience. We are your users. We deserve answers. And do NOT tell me 'we're looking into it' -- every single reg knows that's KG code for 'we're not going to do anything about it, but we hope that by telling you this, you'll be placated and let it go.'

  • If I could love this 1000 times I would. We need answers, all this behind the curtain crap that's been going on is no good. We need mods, like yesterday.

I disagree with the policy of deleting threads instead of just closing them. If nothing else, they should be left up as examples of what not to do.

ETA: I mean generally. Not specifically calling out the PSA thread on WP since I know that was what was mentioned in the post.

I agree with all of this, but I
think this may be a system thing the KGs can't control.  The only time threads disappear/get deleted is when the OP is banned.  I get the sense that it's an automatic thing, but I could be wrong.

And I agree with everything HisGirlFriday said.  Some explanation on what happened would be nice, if for no other reason than helping the rest of us understand what the rules are.  Moderators would solve a lot of these problems.

ETA Quote box not showing up.
Don't worry guys, I have the Wedding Police AND the Whambulance on speed dial!
  • I've been on forums where even when it's the op that is banned, the thread stays. But ya know, KP will have to  'talk to tech' about it
  • Are threads actually disappearing now when someone is banned, or is that something extra?  I know before mods were removed, there was a thing where if you got banned, your posts stuck around - deleting them was an extra step.

My question here is, why is IT changing this system as often as they can?  Do they think it's cute?

  • @NYCBruin, it seems to me that there still should be some way of fixing this. It doesn't feel transparent. Maybe a system like Lia proposed, where the username goes away but the post is there?

KP is obviously very busy and doesn't have the time to clean up the boards - and there are people here more than willing to help. We just want a nice place to post, you know?

ETA: disagreed with myself, edited post.

Oh I completely agree, I just was pointing out that currently it doesn't seem like the KGs go around deleting every post when they are banned.  If there was a way to fix this so just the posts that violate the TOS were deleted and maybe replaced with something like "This comment has been deleted for violating the TOS," I think we all agree that would be MUCH better.  Especially because, like you said, often times there's a lot of good advice in a thread that gets deleted.

It's confusing enough as a reg who's been around since the "old TK".

The "new TK" was supposed to be more accessible and user-friendly for new posters. If I were new here, trying to get established...I would probably be too scared to post. The ban hammer combined with the lack of explaination is just bizzare.

  • Yeah, I don't think we need a detailed description either. I know who we are talking about and the flagging spree said person went on, so that's obvious enough to me.

However, I do think the posts that didn't violate TOS, and other threads should be left up after a banning.

I just noticed the linked thread and that the OP says they've been banned but the thread is still here and open for comments.

Wait, why in the world was that person banned? Not based on that thread, I assume.
  • No, LM, not based on that thread. That was just used for an example.

  • Who got banned, who got banned?

  • Anyone who thinks the reason for that ban isn't "transparent" enough wasn't paying any attention on the thread in question or to the poster over the last two months in general.

I disagree that we other posters are owed a detailed explanation for every banning.
For all we know, a banning may result from something in a private conversation between the banned user and TK Gods that doesn't happen on the boards.

I'm not saying that is what happened here, but I think as long as we all understand the behaviors that can get you banned (listed in TOS), number of warnings before banning (5), and other rules we are expected to follow, that's all we're owed.

    Agree.

    Seconded.

  • I don't think they owe us a detailed explanation, either. I think many are just curious to know what exactly happened b/c it's dramatic. I don't think you're going to get very far "demanding" an answer about it.

    Oh ok, thanks!
  • Hey everyone,

The thread and past threads disappeared because the OP was banned for abusing the flagging system and harassment past our warning limit. We had several conversations offline, but she continued to violate our rules.

She was unbanned momentarily from a backend glitch but is now fully banned.

Unfortunately we can’t keep the posts after a username is banned in our system (even if their posts are helpful to our members.)  Any live posts on the boards that have a “banned user” as the OP are from an IP ban. Our system removes any account(s) associated with it but not the content.

We are working on bringing moderator roles back and are working on their new member permissions.  Plan is to get our review system back up and running first, review the undeserved flags and then bring people on to mod.

I just wish that banned users didn't have their posts disappear, and that if we needed to shut down a thread, it would be locked, not deleted. It's very irritating to go into a thread and see people's replies to posts that I can't read.

  • Did I actually miss this person's final showdown with the Knot Gods?!?!?!?!

I know the links doesn't exist, but somebody please PM me the cliffs notes. I've been waiting on this for about 6 weeks now.

It's actually very anticlimactic. The posts just disappeared.

    Thank you for saying this.

There's no reason to make an example of anyone after they've been banned. You can read the TOS if you'd like to know what's allowed. If you make an error and  violate the TOS, KP and and members of the community will let you know. It's not like anyone will be banned after after a first offense.

  • It was very odd. I went to post and poof! The thread was gone.

I'm sad. I think the person was a valuable contributor but her posts and mood were extremely negative recently.
  • Wow I seem to be completely lost. I'm pretty sure I have no idea what we're talking about.

I mostly lurk.  I tend to respond more so to my local board, and fact based posts versus opinion based, but in the past few months I have gotten a tad bolder.  I have been "chased" and hassled by the "recently departed" during my tenure on The Knot.  I occasionally engaged with her, but more often than not, just walked away.

I am a bit curious about the current trend toward censorship that seems to be cropping up lately.  I will continue to lurk to see how far this censoring, deleting, banning wagon rolls.

So wait, was the author of the PSA thread banned?  Although I usually have her blocked, I did read that thread and I didn't think it was ban worthy.
  • I have finally put 2+2 together and understand what this thread is about. But I don't think I understand why.

It wasn't just about that thread only.  Issues have been occuring in regards to the banned member for a few months now that basically lead up to her now being gone.
