FI and I were supposed to be able to get into our new apartment today. We took the apartment for February 1st. Now I understand that the furniture isn't being delivered until next Friday, which we told the landlord. This week and next week we had planned on scrubbing down the apartment and we had some painting to do. We also wanted to move the bulk of our stuff ourselves so that we don't have to hire a moving company, just rent a truck for a day to move the furniture we do have to save us some money. Luckily, we are in the situation where we didn't need to move ASAP.
We didn't get the keys until the 2nd, fine, its only a day. We were also told that as soon as the tenants moved out on January 15th, we would be able to get into the apartment to measure, never happened. We ordered furniture blindly and purposely had it scheduled for delivery in the middle of the month just in case we needed to switch the furniture, which the place had no problem with us doing, apparently that happens a lot. When we got there on the 2nd, she explained that she was going to have the floors polyurethaned which would take 24 hours to dry, we wouldn't be able to get in there until Tuesday. Fine. The handyman also half-a$$ed the paint job and only painted half of the ceiling, so that needs to get done, as well as clean up a leak that happened during the last snowstorm and fix the paint it ruined. I texted the landlord today to tell her that we switched PSEG over to our names because we were going to go there tonight to start cleaning. She tells me that the floors took longer to dry and the handyman didn't come today because of the weather (the weather has been the excuse every time things aren't done when she says they will be done). I understand that we have had a few more snow storms than usual, but seriously. She then says that the handyman is going to be working on the apartment tomorrow and Friday and that we can store stuff in the basement. We don't want to leave our stuff in the basement when both apartments have access to it.
And speaking of painting, she had offered to paint the apartment in the colors we wanted. Great, awesome, we even fought with her saying no we will take care of it. She left us one wall in the dining room primed because we want to make it an accent wall so we are going to take care of that ourselves. She then told us that painting was getting too costly so the bedroom is the same as the rest of house. Ok, I understand that painting can get costly, but she could have mentioned it. We would have told her to just prime the bedroom and we would paint it, but now we have to prime and paint. I know this part seems petty, but I prefer people to be upfront and honest.
We just feel like we are getting the run around. I've been very vocal with our parents about our displeasure, and my dad said we can't take it out on the landlord, she just has a crappy handyman (who painted the crown molding, who paints crown molding LOL). FI is going there after work today, I'm staying away because I'm so fired up that I've been looking at other apartments. He is going to talk to her about all this and we will take it from there, but even he is ready to walk away.
Are we wrong for wanting to walk away? I'm even willing to leave the security and first month's rent.
