Introducing myself

Hi, everyone! I've been posting comments every now and then for the past few weeks but figured I should properly introduce myself. My name is Liz, and I live in Texas. Boyfriend and I have been together for just over 3 years, and I've been told a proposal is coming soon. I filled out the getting to know you survey a while back and posted it there, but I'm sure it was buried. Anyway, I'm 25, have a degree in library science, and have a Type A personality, so boards like this keep me from going BSC. In my spare time I like to read (duh), knit (why yes, I am an old lady), goof off on the internet (Reddit and the Knot these days), work out, and also veg out in front of the TV with the boyfriend.

I really enjoy reading the comments and posts on this board and hope to get to know you all better!

Hi there! What's the last book you read? Last movie you saw? Do you like guac?

  • Hi and welcome! I thought about doing library science, how do you like your work? Do you like wine? Do you have any pets?

  • *waves* Hello!

I just finished reading book 2 in the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. It was total fluff, but I enjoyed it. Although I could do without the weird obsessive, controlling love interest who treats the female like a pet instead of a partner... anyone else read it?

Currently reading Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. I tend to gravitate towards historical fiction, but I'll read a little bit of everything.

Favorite books... geez, that's hard. I'm really bad at choosing favorites. Love the classics like Pride & Prejudice, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, etc. I'm also a huge Harry Potter nerd (I may or may not knit house scarves for my friends...), loved the Game of Thrones books, really enjoyed The Hunger Games, and also love the book Ella Enchanted. Basically I want my house to have a library that Beast's in Beauty & the Beast.

TV Shows: Game of Thrones, Walking Dead (boyfriend loves anything zombie related), Modern Family, HIMYM (I'm going to pretend the finale didn't happen), White Collar, Suits, Big Bang Theory, Arrested Development, Gilmore Girls, Friends, Pushing Daisies, The Office, Parks & Rec. We're trying to figure out what to watch over the summer now that everything has finished airing. We also like to watch anime. I've only seen a few, but I really enjoyed Fullmetal Alchemist and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Movies! We love movies. The last movie we saw in the theaters was the new X-Men movie, and the last movie we watched at home was The Physician. HIGHLY recommend The Physician!

You know, I'm starting to warm up to guac. I was a really picky eater growing up, and I've only recently started branching out. I didn't like guac for the longest time, but now I'm starting to enjoy it. Salsa, however, is one of my weaknesses. Oh man, I inhale that stuff.

  • Yay for starting to like guac! Soon you will be obsessed!

Besides salsa, what's your favorite food to eat?
  • @lmcooper86 I work for a consortium because library jobs are hard to find these days. I normally tell people interested in library science to do something with IT or computer science because it's a dying industry. Plus the degree isn't cheap and the jobs aren't super high paying. I'll be in debt for many many years... That being said, I really love my job. I've got great hours, great benefits, and get to travel quite a bit for conferences. I lucked out big time.

LOVE wine but hardly drink it anymore. I can never finish a bottle before it goes bad, so I don't bother much anymore. I love both white and red. It's all delicious to me.

No pets yet, but hopefully in the next year or so. Pet deposits and pet rents are so expensive these days, and we move like once a year, so we're waiting until we find a more permanent apartment without a staggering pet deposit.

@phira I haven't yet, but everyone recommends it! The series finale aired recently, right? OH! And I forgot to add Breaking Bad to that list. BF and I marathoned it right as it finished. Man, that was a fantastic show, but I was depressed for about a week after finishing it.

@southernpeach89 I love food. Om nom nom. I'm trying to be good and get back on a strict diet and exercise regime (recently lost 25 pounds and then gained 10 back over the holidays. Eek!), so my favorite diet-friendly foods are pretty boring. Chicken tortilla soup, taco salad, lemon pepper chicken, green beans, edamame, etc. Cheat meals are normally sesame chicken, mac n cheese, pizza, burgers, etc. Actually, one of my all-time favorite cheat meals is chicken enchiladas covered in queso with double rice. Oh man, so good.

Yep! The show ended around the same time HIMYM did. We use Amazon Instant Video for a lot of current TV that isn't on Hulu, and we were waiting for season 8 to finish before we bought and watched it. So when we finished HIMYM, we were both like UGH THE FINALE WAS TERRIBLE MUST WATCH SOMETHING BETTER and binge-watched the last season of Psych. Excellent, if abbreviated season, and great finale.

  • Yeah, let's just pretend HIMYM's finale didn't happen. I think it's even more of a slap in the face when they announced that they'd filmed the kids' part of the finale during season 2 because it meant that they'd planned that terrible ending from day 1. BF and I both yelled at the TV during that episode lol.

Sounds like Psych is going to be one of our summer shows! Good to know that it's on Amazon. We have Prime but have never really used the video streaming part. Do you like it?

I hope you like Burial Rites! I read it earlier this year for my bookclub and thought it was fascinating. A lady in our bookclub is actually Icelandic so she had some really interesting things to say in our group discussion. Also, Ella Enchanted is my all-time favorite book! I have a copy that was from one of the earlier publishing runs (my book is over 15 years old...scary) and it's seriously torn to pieces because I've read and re-read it so many times. I know it's a kids book but I think it's one of my favorite Cinderella retellings.

Do you like to read Ken Follett?

  • @LaPeanut1018 I've only read the first chapter so far, but I really like it. I like that we get snippets from different narrators as everything happens, and the descriptions are vivid but succinct. No long descriptions about food and clothes like George R.R. Martin. :-P And yay for another Ella Enchanted fan! My copy is from one of those Scholastic book fairs in elementary school. It may be about 15 years old too now that I think about it... wow. I feel old. I haven't read Ken Follett yet, but he's been recommended a few times. I bought one of his books on my Kindle but haven't read it yet. What are your favorite books and authors?

The first seven seasons are all on Netflix! It's not on Prime for free, unfortunately. We paid for the whole season (same with HIMYM).

And yeah, we were so pissed about the ending. Like, you have this AMAZING story-telling device, and you spent season after season convincing me that I did not want these two people together. I was entirely convinced. So why would I suddenly want them together in the last 5 minutes?

Ken Follett - Both his World Without End and Pillars of the Earth books are incredible! Also his Century Trilogy (Fall of Giants and Winter of the World, no third book yet) I haven't been reading much lately. But I've always loved Jean Auel (pre-historical fiction and the books are ginormous which makes me SO happy) and Diana Gabaldon. Also Kristen Britain (fantasy but she's really really really good!) and Kelly Armstrong. Michael Crichton. Anne McCaffrey. Marion Zimmer Bradley (not everything, most the books she wrote around the Mists of Avalon), The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, Kim Harrison (she's my guilty pleasure reads), Patricia Briggs (more amazing fantasy both modern and I guess you'd call it traditional)

The bolded makes me so happy! I LOVE Ella Enchanted. It was probably one of my 10 ten favorite books growing up (Harry Potter makes up 7 out of the 10 books on that list lol)!

Also, it's awesome that you knit house scarves for your friends! I'm a HUGE Harry Potter nerd, I just started my annual summer re-reading of the whole series!

Ohhh okay. We'll definitely look into it. Sounds like a good show for us to marathon this summer while everything else is on hiatus.

EXACTLY! Plus, they spend 9 years building up how wonderful the mother is, how she's his soul mate, how his life is so much better once he meets her. We even get her back story and become really invested in her, and then within 5 minutes of the finale she's gone. No real details, no real glimpse of their life together... ugh. Terrible. The first three seasons of that show are truly fantastic though.

I haven't heard of a lot of those authors. I'll have to do some research! Yay! I'm starting to get more into fantasy, especially after I started dating BF. He reads non-stop, and it's all fantasy and sci-fi. I've read a couple of the series he's read, but I'm always looking for more recommendations in that genre. Will definitely check those authors out!

I reeeeeeally want to go to the theme park in Orlando, but it just hasn't happened yet. What's your favorite HP book? And yay for more Ella Enchanted fans!

I haven't been to the theme park in Orlando either :( but it's absolutely on my bucket list and there will be all sorts of freaking out when it happens!

Picking a book is so hard! The first time I read them, Prisoner of Azkaban was definitely my favorite. I felt like that's when the plots started to get a little deeper and I love reading about James and Sirius! But now The Half-Blood Prince is probably my favorite.

Which is your favorite? Favorite character?

Hmmm I think it's a tie between Goblet of Fire and Half-Blood Prince. Every time I re-read them, my favorites change though. Favorite character is Hermione. She's almost always level-headed and calls people out for their crap. I love her!

Hi and welcome!!  I am also in for the pretending HIMYM series finale never existed.  Prior to the finale I was rewatching the seasons on Netflix and was loving the little tidbits they were adding to the final season that answered things from earlier.  I haven't watched a single episode since the finale... boo!!

Do you have a favorite GIF to share?? That's one of my favorite parts of the board!

Anything chocolate. I love all things chocolate. Om nom nom.

Also, gummy bears. I reeeeeally love the Trolli Big Bold Bears but can never find them. It's an unspoken rule in my household that if BF or I find the Trolli Big Bold Bears, we buy them immediately and I ignore my diet for the day. BF may or may not have bought me 5 pounds of regular Trolli gummy bears for Christmas and shoved them all in my stocking:

Yeah, those didn't even last until the end of January.
