@jenna8984 If you like Clinique, try the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel or the Moisture Surge Gel. It costs more that $10 but I love it! The gel isn't too gooey or heavy and I have really sensitive skin and is acne prone, this doesn't break me out.
I had started the Oil Cleansing Method but I fell back into what was working better before.
Morning: Wash with Neutrogena liquid cleanser (orange stuff) and apply Clinique lotion
Night: Wash with Dove soap (the pink kind) and scrup with a baby baby brush. The brush is essentially like a Clarisonic or other brush, just manual. And since it is made for babies, it isn't rough. Then apply Vitamin E oil as moisture. This doesn't leave the tight feeling but you're sleepingn so you won't notice!
I'm a social media manager for a company and when someone asks me about my job a lot of the time it's in a condescending way, "So, you just sit on Facebook and Twitter all day?" "So you get paid to do nothing?"
Admittedly, many people I work with call me "the Facebook girl," but as a friendly joke.
I think I might start introducing myself as an online marketing person, that way when I start talking about SEO and all that fun stuff I might not get so many "jokes."
Augh, stuck in box!
I work in higher ed but liaise frequently with marketing, since they manage our social media presence. I don't envy you. I wish social media didn't exist for places of employment sometimes. Brand management is crazy insane! I mean, look at the faux-twitter accounts that make fun of real companies, or consider how people treat Twitter accounts like Customer Service. (I had a ball reading the faux-United Airlines account until UA actually shut it down. People would intend to tag the real UA and spell it wrong, so somebody took the misspelled posts and responded to them. Hilarious.)
It's only annoying to talk about my job because it's within the sphere of politics, and everyone seems to have an opinion on everything related to politics.
Also... Sephora is my Mecca. I could live in there. I've been buying cheaper makeup since I don't have to wear it to work anymore, but I still buy my Shiseido skincare.
Same here to the bolded! I work in politics as well and people constantly want to have a political debate when they find out that's what I do.
It can get so annoying! Especially because I don't work in the actual political end of things. I order coffee. I write invoices. I reconcile budgets. I'm an office manager for a company that just happens to have ties to politics. But no one ever wants to debate about the merits of Bic vs. PaperMate pens! haha
My oldest sister has been a doc for more than 10yrs so she usually gets most of the questions, though that's prob gonna shift since she's a specialist and I'm gonna be a family doc. But I don't really mind when friends and family ask me health-related stuff; I'm usually glad if I can be helpful. Though now that I've actually finished med school I have more answers to questions than when I first started out. I'd usually be like "I don't know, they didn't teach us that yet! sorry!" But now, I actually know some stuff (emphasis on "some" lol, haven't started residency yet) so I'm happy to share what I know, though unless it's really straightforward I usually still end with "you should probably see/ask your doctor to be sure..."
Well I love when people ask me about my work...usually. Some people try to ask me leading questions so they can lecture me on how I need a real job, or how wrong tattoos are. Look I don't care if you do or don't want one, but don't ask me questions just to lecture me. I'm smarter now, I'm much better at figuring out leading questions and avoiding them.
I know FI is split on hate and love. She loves to talk about what she does and explain what it is and why she does it. And she has no problem giving some general legal advice. But she gets annoyed at the idea that she should help everyone always with their legal problems for free because they're friends.
I have always wanted to ask a tattoo artist about eleventy-bazillion questions, because it totally fascinates me.
You may ask me! Though maybe not eleventy-bazillion all at once.
I have a question. Have you ever seen a tattoo artist with no tats?
Because I would totally be a tattoo artist with no tats. I love them and wish I could get one, but I can't make that big of a commitment. Plus FI doesn't like them and doesn't want them on me.
I personally wouldn't trust an artist with no tattoos. lol
Not any tattoo artists without tattoos, but I have known piercers without piercings (aside from like their ears). I'd probably raise my eyebrows at an artist with no tats, but figure they might still be a good artist. But I'd be asking so many questions about why they don't have tats.
But what about tattoo artists that have tattoos, but not in visible areas? Or not visible in whatever clothing they were wearing at the time (ie. jeans and a sweater)? I just mean people shouldn't assume that just because they don't see a tattoo means that one is not tattooed.
I love talking about my job but it isn't something people would ask advice questions about (I'm a chemist). Mostly when I tell people what I do, I get blank stares.

I loved that account and thought it was hilarious...however I can definitely see how it'd be bad for the actual UA. I really do like my job a lot, it's just a pain in my ass that people don't really see it as an actual job.
Even when I was hired it was "we want to do social media," and when I start asking strategies, objectives, etc. they got all surprised and was like "well we want you to do the twitter and stuff..." so I'm getting to create everything from scratch, which is fun but I feel like a damn psychic ("I think you want me to do this, right?") lol

That's an excellent point. Most artists I've been around (and I can't and shouldn't speak for all of us) are more then happy to roll up a sleeve and show you what they have done. Hell we often have the best examples of what things will look like.
For the most part I don't mind talking about my job, but I do get some annoying questions. I'm an electrical engineer, and most of the time people give me a blank stare when I talk about what I do. However, I have had a few people ask me for advice on how to re-wire their house or car, which is when I have to explain the difference between an electrician and an electrical engineer.
I also have the occasional requests to fix a computer, and more recently, cell phones, when they don't work. I work in the wireless industry and on circuitry that will eventually end up in cell phones, but I am not the one who puts it all together. My specific job is to test the brand new circuit designs and to work with the designers to get the circuits to work initially. So I really can only tell someone that their phone is indeed broken if it won't turn on, and that it wasn't my fault.
I typically do not mind as long as people do not abuse the relationship. We own an auto business so it can get annoying when people want to just come in and talk and try to get "free diagnostic" or when friends/family expect a discount. Or the most annoying this is when people you do not talk to unless they need help with their cars! I am all for helping people but don't take advantage of the friendship or make us feel guilty because we are not going to work on your car for free. We do have a business to run.
Most people don't ask me about work, since I'm a teacher, and since everyone went to school, they already know exactly what I do everyday. Which is obviously play dodgeball

I absolutely love talking about my work. I'm an esthetician and a total nerd about skin, so I always LOVE talking about treatments or product lines or ingredients. In fact, when someone does ask me questions, I warn them that I get really carried away and to just stop me any time they get bored.
@ashleigh816 Is it terrible that I refuse to put lotion on my face? I wash and then use clinique toner (which is basically just witchhazel) and then I love that tight feeling it gives my skin so I leave it alone. I feel like my pores are all nice and clean, why glom it up with lotion? But if I'm going to turn into a wrinkly hag, please suggest a face lotion lol. Truth be told I'm also just too damn cheap for most products. Anything sold in Sephora I think is a major rip-off. I won't spend more than $10 on anything for my face...which you probably find insane!
You should come with me when I go to Sephora and slap things out of my hand. I really shouldn't go in there unsupervised.
hahaha! I went with my best friend because she had a gift card. OMG. She spent hours in there trying things on her hand. I was like are you kidding me right now. She got a $55 eye shadow palette, $35 mask, and some other stuff. I was cringing and thinking of my $2.99 Cover Girl eye shadow lol
I've got a mix of OMG that's fucking expensive for make up, and super cheap drug store stuff. But Sephora is so awesome because you can try it all out!!! I love Ulta too. Though I'm not sure I could $55 for eye shadow. I think my urban decay one was...$40ish...maybe $35.
------Damn box-----
I'm the same way with makeup. But I at least tell myself I have an excuse! I have extremely sensitive skin and drugstore makeup often breaks me out. I try to buy for quality over quantity. So I have two smallish trays of makeup in my bathroom, but they are all super nice. I can't go in Sephora too much because I'll spend $50 like that.
As for the original question: I don't mind talking about my job, but people often jump to weird conclusions about what I do. I'm a recent law grad and I'm going into securities litigation for a big law firm in NYC. People hear "securities litigation" and either think about actual security/safety, or they say, "Oh good, we really need that with all these big banks running around crazy!" Ummmm..... I work for a firm of 800 lawyers. We represent the big banks. But here's the really hard part for people to understand: it's never Big Bank vs. Joe Schmo. It's Big Bank vs. Bigger Bank. People start to glaze over once I start talking about underwriters and security registrations and 10b actions, so usually we find something else to talk about. If you have a law question about your landlord or your taxes or your divorce, I'm totally clueless.
Now if you ask me about my pro bono interests at work? Let's talk.
When I was a high school teacher in an urban area, I got a lot of judgey comments about my kids and their parents. If you said anything about how it must be so hard to teach "those kids" and "I bet the parents don't even care," I would put you in your place so fast your head would spin.
"I'm not a rude bitch. I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."
For the most part I don't mind talking about my job, but I do get some annoying questions. I'm an electrical engineer, and most of the time people give me a blank stare when I talk about what I do. AuroraRose41 did I know you were EE? I am graduating with my MSEE. I do analog design and am going to do a mix of board level and embedded system and programming when I graduate at my new product design. Feel free to PM me, I'd love to hear more about your job!
I could have written that first paragraph. 50% of my family thinks I'm an electrician and that I can re-wire everything. It doesn't help that I do re-wire some of their household stuff. I also get the computer questions or asking if I work for power companies.
I don't mind, usually. I do usually feel embarrassed to talk about it, but that's a personal problem. I'm a journalist, and most of my family are scientists or engineers, so I tend to feel like I have an easy degree/career or not a "real" one. (Doesn't help that some family members have implied this in what they've said.)
The annoying this is when people find out and then they say "I better be careful what I say, it could end up in print."
It's like haven't you ever heard of ethics? I couldn't write about my friends if I wanted to.
Well, I don't really have a career field. I qualified as a legal secretary 10 years ago, held one job in the field, went back to school to study law, and dropped out after a year (because I failed the language requirement). I then worked in debt counselling/financial rehabilitation for a while.
I have one friend who has had a lot of financial/legal trouble and bugged me for advice on it. That was annoying.
I've also worked in social media (my last job), and the whole "So you get paid to sit on Facebook all day?" thing really got to me. Personally, I think businesses should stay the hell off of social media, but that's not going to happen so SOMEONE has to actually manage/curate the pages.
Most people don't ask me about work, since I'm a teacher, and since everyone went to school, they already know exactly what I do everyday. Which is obviously play dodgeball
I was going to say something very similar.
Unless they ask things like, "Why do you assign so much work if you don't have time to grade it?"
I love talking about my job but I hate when people ask questions. Is that weird?
I'm an animal trainer and for some reason people just assume I will help with their naughty pets, or that I'm evil (think PETA/blackfish)
Well I love when people ask me about my work...usually. Some people try to ask me leading questions so they can lecture me on how I need a real job, or how wrong tattoos are. So you are a tattoo artist and your fiancée is a lawyer? I love it! I feel like law is still a field where tattoos are taboo, so if she has any, even better. People are always shocked to learn that basically my entire torso is tattooed, because they can't see any in the courtroom.
As a prosecutor, I have no problem when people ask me about my work, I love helping people out. With that being said, as a PP mentioned, if you ask me anything about elder law, real estate law, etc I only know what I learned in one class in law school 8 or 9 years ago! I am actually learning a lot more now that DH has a general practice law firm..... He teaches me and I am often around then people ask him general law questions.
I'm an accountant. I love financial statements and analysis so if I'm asked to take a look at your balance sheet, income statement, and/or help you
set up a chart of accounts for your home business, etc.... Sure glad to
help! OTOH I hate taxes so if people start asking me about taxes, capital gains, investment portfolios, AMT, etc... I have no interest.
I worked as an auditor in public accounting for several years I never could get my family to understand that I didn't work for the IRS. People hear the word auditor and they tend to get real quiet. It is pretty humorous.
I'm a pre-nursing student right now, so other than my FI, no one asks me health questions. When I was in animal sciences I did get questions about animals, which I enjoy and I do know more than the average person about animals, but there comes a point where it's like "dude. You should really go to the vet/hire a trainer".
I used to train horses. I like talking about it, but it's kind of hard to explain to nonhorse people, and it sounds really boring. It goes something like this:
"oh, so do you jump?"
"ahh.. no. I have, but that's not the kind of training I do now."
"Oh, so you must race!"
"umm, kind of the opposite, actually. We go around in circles really slow at a walk, jog and lope and get judged on how pretty it looks"
"what's a lope?"
I also get a lot of questions from people interested in either becoming a vet or a horse trainer. I give realistic answers and people don't always like that. My advice goes a little deeper than "follow your dreams and everything else will fall into place!" because it doesn't. That's why I'm pre-nursing now.

@shelld13 Yes! I also started out in public audit and no one knows what that means. They assume IRS or internal audit. They would say "Oh when I worked at stop & Shop they had people like audit the cash drawers, is that what you do?" Shaking my head. I'm also in financial accounting now- BS, IS, month end close. While I don't do anything related to taxes at work, I still enjoy doing them for my friends because I believe no one should have to pay H&R Block $300 to file something that's mandatory.

@jenna8984 - That is true I've helped friends with taxes on occasion but I generally point them to H&R Block online it is basically foolproof and much cheaper than seeing one of their workers in person. I had a family member who posted on FB about not wanting to pay $300 to have their taxes done. I was astounded because while I didn't know their whole financial situation I was pretty sure they didn't have anything funky to account for. Turns out they weren't even eligible to itemize - its highway robbery! I got her to create an account on H&R Block online and she ended up paying about $50 and was very appreciative. She said it was much easier than she thought it would be. I don't think she'll ever end up going back to a bricks and mortar office again. :-)
daria24 - How does one get into becoming a TV producer? I think that sounds like an awesome field!
I'm pretty sure everyone in the industry had a different path, though many people were film/journalism/TV majors. In my case I answered a Craig's List ad looking for PAs for a casting call, and pretty much everything snowballed after that. It's a career where you really only get jobs by talking to other people and asking who's hiring. Which can be very frustrating at times. But I love the field and I can't imagine doing anything else.

She was a lawyer for a while, but decided it wasn't for her and decided to become a mediator. She's a lot happier...and makes more money and actually comes home at a normal hour. So a win for me too. Though...I think she keeps everything current so that she could technically practice if she wanted too...or something like that. I'm not 100% sure.
And yes, she does have tattoos. Not as many as me, but a few and planning more. I asked her about it once and she told me a lot of attorneys have tattoos, they just cover them for court and it's no big deal. I love find out what my clients do, especially when they're getting harder to hide tattoos, because I love tattoos becoming acceptable in the more traditional work world.
I absolutely love when people ask about my work, since I'm a travel planner for the Orlando area. I can talk theme parks and resorts all day long! The only thing is when people (or mainly, family) ask for hook ups, to which I have to tell them that unless I'm going with them, I usually can't do anything.
MagicInk I can't wait until tattoos are more acceptable in the work place. I used to work for the Hard Rock and it was so easy...now not so much.

I used to work at a very respectable law firm in the city. If I remember correctly, all the lawyers and clerks but one had at least one tattoo, and she was a Seventh-day Adventist. She was totally cool with all the tattoos in the office, loved the idea of them, but would never get one for religious reasons. Of the four secretaries/admin people, two had tattoos. We had a work function once and several of my co-workers were ribbing me because I didn't have any ink back then. Mostly they were in easily covered areas, but our favourite clerk had a GIANT cross on his forearm which was never covered in summer.
I study and teach religion. I love it when people who know my area of specialization ask me relevant or sort of relevant questions to that, and I love it when my BIL or sister ask me how their pastor did on XYZ thing he said. I don't mind answering questions about general religion from random people who meet me and find out what I do, but often I don't have a good answer for them because I don't study modern Tibetan Buddhism/Mormons/Evangelical Christianity/Shinto/whatever. Getting asked if I'm going to be a minister gets tiring, but I don't generally get annoyed at that.
