SYTTD - $4500 on a toddler dress!

That's like a semester of college!  Bride spent a total of $70K?  On dresses?

And these were certainly not top shelf folks!   I hate to say it, but where on earth does one get that kind of money?????  Plus, (I'm being snarky here - surprise, surprise), the braces on her teeth out blinged that fugly Pnina dress.

They probably don't have that kind of money. Nothing like putting your dreams on plastic!!

Oh yes, but that is still some serious plastic!  And that's just the dresses!  Add another $40-50k.  Man.  That's crazy.

  • Ugh. Some people do have that kind of money sometimes and it's disgusting that it's just peanuts for them!

As far as those people?  Who knows?  Maybe it's plastic? Maybe they are mortgaging their home? Maybe they have strange priorities (i.e. live in a shoe box to afford a $70K dress)?

I'm not sure how you know they are not top shelf people.   One of our multi-millionaire club members wears Wrangler jeans while ordering $1000 bottles of wine.
Oh, I am being judgy - even noveau riche could not be a possibility.  I was really going to be mean and say drug dealers.  Or maybe the fiance was a low level rapper.  Yup.  I'm going there.

  • I could never spend money like that. Even if I were rich, I wouldn't do that. Still, I try not to judge people who are wealthy enough. If they choose to spend thousands on clothes and can afford to do so, it's their choice. To them it may be worth it, even though it's not what I'd do.

Hey, I'm pro-money.  I could be rich.  But there's taste.  And there's craziness.  This was cray cray on a whole other level.  I wouldn't spend my money that way either, but the toddler dress.  The toddler dress.  OMG.  That was insane.  And the kid wasn't cute either.  Oh, lawd!

I am very well aware that there are people out there that REALLY do have that kind of money.

FWIW, I have a few credit cards and between them all, have over $100K worth of credit lines. So, running on the assumption these people didn't come from much, they still could have a very large credit limit. I personally never carry a balance and would have no reason to ever charge that much for anything.

WTF?! I really hope I misunderstood this and you meant that the dress wasn't cute. I really hope you didn't mean it like it sounded to me, which was that if the kid had been cuter, it would be wrong still, but a little more ok to spend that mind of money.

I'm not saying I'd spend money like that on a toddler dress either. But it's not my decision to make.  ETA: I do think it's silly to spend so much on a dress for a child that will outgrow it in a couple months.

Same here.  I know I'm being all kinds of judgy  It just strikes me as all kinds of wrong.

No, it wasn't.  The price for the dress and it wasn't cute.  And for a year and a half, perfectly cute little girl.

  • I'm being overly judgy as well. I'm very cranky right now because I don't feel well and people doing stupid things with money is one of my biggest pet peeves.

  • If one can judge for gaps, weird reception set ups or other things, I think it's certainly okay to judge crazy folk paying cray cray money on stupid expensive dresses.  On the teevee machine.  When FH is knee deep in football...

  • @wrigleyville, I was only stating that her teeth were more blingy than her dress that probably costs more than the braces themselves.  And it was a blingy (is there a bling font on this thing?) dress.

Jells2dot0 me too.  I don't know why it strikes me so.  Actually, I've seen the episode before.  Not sure.  Maybe it's judgy, cranky Sunday and no one told me??

It's one thing to judge things that are questionable etiquette. This is not that.
  • This is a really petty thing to judge.

I just wanted to follow up this cause it's true. You never know how much money a person has. Sure, even those of us who work in sales will judge people by how they look and act to try and ball park how much we can get out of them, but eventually you'll have that one customer where it will bite you in the ass.

FWIW, I did see this episode of SYTTD and I also thought she was crazy. But she could be crazy loaded.

RajahBMFD   Really?  As many side eyes that I've read about guests wearing white to weddings?  That's not petty?

@chibiyui  From where I sit, judging etiquette that doesn't hurt anyone is fairly petty when compared with spending what could amount to a semester of college for the price of a dress for a 2 year old?  Seriously?

This is not to say that I wasn't judgy or snarky; freely admitted, but then to be accused of being so petty seems a bit, I don't know, hypocritical maybe?   Let's face it, we all make judgments.  None of them are probably very nice.  Mine was about someone on a TV show.

Maybe this would have been better on snarky brides board.

4500 for a toddler dress seems like a lot to me too, but think about how much people spend on weddings.

Some people spend more than 4500 on flowers that will die within a few days. People spend way more than that on food that will be eaten in an hour, and some people spend more than that on the bar bill or the photographer.

Everyone has things that they think are unimportant but others are willing to spend money on.

I just hope this SYTTD woman doesn't have a cash bar and invites all SO, if she's spending 70K on dresses.

All is good now.  Having my cocktail.  Although a shot of kirschwasser might not exactly fall into the fun cocktail category.

It's one thing to judge an expensive dress.   I also have judged someone on the purchase of the dress.  It was designer and cost a lot of money, but damn it was ugly. What a waste of $10K IMO.  Whatever, their money.

It's quite another to speculate if they can afford the purchase based on them "not being top shelf" and wearing braces.  Even worse thinking they or their family/FI are possible drug dealers or "low level rappers" as the reason they might be able to afford the dress.   A scripted TV does not give you enough info to come to that conclusion.
I get where you're coming from.  But I would counter that seeing it would make it a better than even bet.

Eh honestly, idk how much I would judge this. If I had the means to spend $4500 on a toddler, I would. For some reason North pops in my head right now. I read somewhere she Wears a $50k Chanel bag or something. Well that's more than my entire wardrobe. My newest bag is a $40 H&M bag. That bag was well within my wardrobe budget. So if $50k is within that budget, so be it.

Now, if they can't afford it and they have a honeyfund for this crap, yea I'm judging the hell out of it.

  • @pinkcow13   That reminds of me of Diddy buying his son a Maybach for his 16th birthday.  Don't care if he can afford it.  I'm judging the hell out of that.
