Lord help us if this storm makes its way down to Atlanta. I guess I better start stocking up...
It's that lake effect shit so I don't think it's going to do the same thing there. I got REALLY concerned about it until my mom reminded me that BTW we live 10 hours from there and it would've started making it's way over here by now if it hadn't dropped all the snow off in NY.

We would have had that in the backyard, if we didn't keep up with the shoveling. (The wind was blowing huge drifts against the back door.)

  • Here in Chicago, we have had storms that dropped 2 1/2 feet of snow. With the proper warnings and preparedness, it can be really nice to hunker down for a day or two. In my lifetime, I've experienced a fair share of "big ones". I have to say, however, that I watch the news with my mouth agape at the incredible storm your area is experiencing. I hope your area is able to recover quickly without too much damage control.
  • @themuffinman16 my family is out there too.   They've managed to use this 'break' in between storms to at least clear the driveway, but they said the biggest problem?  Their road hasn't seen a snow plow yet - so they're beginning to wonder with the 1-2' more they're supposed to get if the plows will even BE able to get down the road.

At first yesterday morning I was all like man I would've loved the snow and the snow day that came with it (we're East of there), but yea by this morning I was more thank God we did not get that stuff! Stay safe there!
  • How do nurses even get to work in that snow storm? .... I'm thankful that I don't live somewhere that gets that much snow.

  • So crazy! I saw the Thruway pic the other day.
  • I live in Winterpeg and this post made me realize we have no bottled water or canned food so we should probably stock up just in case.
  • There are videos of nurses getting stuck in their cars.
My sister's neighbor's cousin died from being trapped in his vehicle.. It could have been from the exhaust backing up as the snow covered his car. Most people don't think of that when they are trapped in their cars. Her cousin was just coming home from work, got stuck in traffic, and didn't have warm enough clothes with him. Hypothermia is an more obvious issue, for stranded passwngers. That area was getting 3 inches of snow an hour.
When people die in this area, during a snowstorm, it is usually from a heart attack from shoveling or a car accident.
There are still many people who have not been rescued from their cars yet. They closed the highways too late, and cars were getting stuck. We got 4 more inches of snow than was expected. I hope there are no more deaths, but authorities won't know until they can rescue more people from their cars. It's really sad.
  • I do worry about carbon monoxide poisoning when there is this much snow.  It blocks vents and car exhausts.  Check your CO Detectors.  Positive vibes to everyone in the thick of it.

  • And the Buffalo weather made Buzzfeed. And also got a shout out from Ellen on her Facebook page.

  • See, I think I'd like to live somewhere with "guaranteed" white Christmases (instead of the ONE we've had in the last 50 or so years) but then stuff like this happens and I'm like, "Nope, no, I like my no snow life. Thanks."

Hopefully it's done for a little bit. That looks absolutely awful.

One of my friends that lives in the greater Buffalo area (Cheektowaga) said that after clear skies all day, it's snowing again. Supposed to get another foot to two feet in some areas by Friday.
  • That. Is. Crazy.

Like, okay, you win, Buffalo, everyone else went home, it's no contest. Nothing I will have to deal with this winter is going to possibly approach that.

    Thanks for posting that link!

Although it's probably too late now, another "forgotten" hazard to check is the dryer vent.  I schlepped through three feet of snow last winter to dig out my vent.  I fell once and lost both boots.

Upstate NY has this contest every winter called the Golden Snowball - award goes to whatever city has the most snowfall by the end of the winter. Pretty sure Buffalo has already won. They may have also broken the record (nationwide) for most snowfall in 24 hours.

I think that Syracuse won the one miserable year I lived there!

ETA: Syracuse almost always wins! (BTW Buffalo proper only measures 8.5 inches as of today!)image

The city of Buffalo never get's record snowfall, but their southtown suburbs of Buffalo are almost always in the running.
We are now in phase two of the storm.  It is thundering and the snow is dumping on us, again. Had a few pear cosmopolitans, tonight.  Just relaxing with my family and watching the snow come down.
  • I grew up in Buffalo. I remember the blizzard of 77. I'm sure glad I'm in Houston now! I still have family and friends up there. Sending prayers

  •  @luckya23 I went to SU for college and was there from 2004-2008 - I believe in 2007, we had only the 5th snow day ever in the school's entire 200+ year history. It was nuts. That was also the year I totaled my car due to snow. I live near Rochester now and we don't really get anything - it's always Buffalo, Syracuse and Watertown that get hardest hit.
  • Muffin, does everything basically shut down for the entire duration of the storm? I know there are driving bans in some areas. Are some people expected to go in to work?
  • edited November 2014
Everything is shut down, still.  One grocery store was open, yesterday. The driving ban is in full effect. These employees were either walking to work or were given rides in snowmobiles. If you can't get there, you are excused. Only two grocery stores have managed to open, but the food is clearing out. My sister's neighbor had to call the paramedics to deliver her insulin.  They delivered it in a snowmobile. My sister's FI's aunt had to be taken to dialysis by police escort.
Authorities are being really strict about the driving ban, but the Galleria Mall is open(the one I was complaining about in another thread).  Even though all of the roads leading to the Galleria are closed and barricaded by abandoned vehicles and snow, they are still open.  Under the weight of the mall, stores are threatening to fire employees if they don't come in. Even though it is illegal to drive. The Galleria mall has released statements denying these claims, but I have seen several workers post on social media that there jobs were said to be in Jeopardy if they didn't come in. Everywhere else is the southtowns is in total shutdown.
Meals on Wheels is also in shutdown. We are bringing some food to elderly neighbors, but it's hard since the weather is getting really bad, and the houses are spaced far apart.  It also makes me think of infants being fed on formula.  I think that it is, also, considered an emergent supply and is being delivered by the fire department to homes in need. We are so lucky to have such caring neighbors and such amazing first responders. One man had a heart attack and was carried 10 blocks by first responders to the hospital in South Buffalo, because no emergency vehicles could get through.
The power have been flickering.  Not sure if we will keep our power, tonight.  Thank God we have a gas stove and a woodburning fireplace. In Cheektowaga there is fear of roof collapses (the snow was more dense in that neighborhood).  Fireman are going through residential areas and inspecting roofs. They had to evacuate a nursing home, because the roof was buckling.

This is giving me anxiety and making me want to run the sleds out to the edge of shit and start helping. Fuuuuuuuck.

  • It sucks being so far away and not being able to help, but Buffalo is the city of good neighbors, and there have been lots of reports of people helping out. People using their snowmobiles to bring medications to the elderly is really helping.
The driving ban won't be lifted until town plows are fitted with equipment for the amount of snow we have.  Local plows aren't equipped to push this snow, so we have to wait for each town to borrow the supplies of the county and national guard to remove excessive snow.

After shoveling yesterday, the snow is back. The snow on the roof is worrisome . Lol.

  • AGH. I'll borrow a snowmobile and come get you; I can drive straight across Lake Erie, right?

Forget Christmas carols, let's write "White Thanksgiving."
