  • Why don't you send a little bit of snow over here? But a LITTLE. This old guy on the bus the other day was wailing about how he hopes to get snow this year for Christmas. And my roommate too. Ugh.

  • They're saying this winter is supposed to be worse than last winter, and last winter SUCKED. Atlanta got slammed with ice and it took me and FI 5 hours to get the 30 miles home from work. I am so not dealing with that again. I left PA to get away from this shit.
Pssh, I left at 11:30 and got home at 9; it was about 40 miles for me.  And it sounds like we were both lucky enough to actually get home rather than being stuck overnight.

I will tell you though, I lived here for all my nearly 30 years and had NEVER seen anything like that.  I'd say it's very, very, very unlikely that will happen again this year.  Remember too, that it wasn't just the weather, it was the whole entire metro Atlanta area leaving work and school all at the same time.  I mean you put a few million people on the roads at one and traffic is fucked.  Add in the ice and hills and accidents at every single intersection and, well, snowpocalypse traffic happens.

If anything, they'll be way more cautious this year and cancel school at the mere mention of any possible winter weather.  I bet people who were stuck in it will be more likely to try to work from home if there's any chance of anything happening.

That's what Buffalo said the last time we had people trapped on the thruway. The county even added gates to the highway to stop people from getting on when the highway was closed. This year, they closed the roads too late. They think they have managed to rescue everyone, but they won't know until they check all of the cars.

I saw on CNN that one man was found dead in his car, which was buried under snow. It didn't specify how he died, but it just sounds so awful. I'm glad you are in a house!

  • Yeah, there was so many people that didn't make it home. I remember seeing cars abandoned on the side of the highway for weeks after. It didn't help that all the schools and businesses decided to close at the same time. Our company was putting everyone up in hotels but we had to get home to the dog.

I hope they err on the side of caution this year and just shut everything down at the possibility of bad weather.

  • I saw a news report today that about 30 people have been living in a Walmart all week because of all the snow and the travel ban. Their cars are all in the parking lot buried under all the snow.

I almost feel like that could be a good situation. Furniture to sleep on, tons of food, blankets, water, medicine, first aid supplies, toys. I would totally be riding around on a bike or something.

I mean, obviously it's always gonna suck to be trapped somewhere and not be able to get home, but I'm way more worried about the people that could be trapped without food and water and essential stuff ya know?

They had footage of the people hanging out in the Walmart. They had gotten out air mattresses to sleep on, put up some chairs in the entertainment section and someone even made a beef stew in a crock pot. Seems like they are doing okay.

I agree that there are probably a lot of people who don't have a lot stocked up at home and can't go out to get anything. It sounds like people are helping each other out from what @themuffinman16 said.

    Wow, a whole $10!
Eh.  Since people around here have been out of work for days, there's actually a lot of interest to participate by football and non-football fans alike.   Once the snow/roads clear it can offer a chance at some extra income that people are now missing because of the forced snowdays (unless your company's nice you don't get paid for the forced snowday).    Plus as I hear it - it could take up to 6 days to clear once they get the go ahead to start doing it - so that means a lot of extra money depending on how long you work.   Plus if your kid likes the game - early Christmas present?
Shoveling snow is freaking back breaking labor. IMO, it deserves more than $10 an hour!
  • Two more people were found dead in vehicles that authorities were able to check, today. It scares me that the death toll could go a lot higher.  30 more roofs collapsed, last night. Thank god, they are checking ALL of the schools in the southtowns to make sure they are structurally sound, before the schools reopen. Flatter roofs are the most dangerous, because there is no pitch for the weight of the snow to slide off on its own.
One year, I got stuck at a grocery store and it was so much fun.  Cars were stuck and there were driving bans.  Wegman's (the grocery store) had their taste tester cooks make large amounts of food for all of the people trapped there.  The store opened new board games and brought them out for people to play and bought all of the beer to share with everyone and candy for kids.  It was such a good time with people I had never met before.  In Buffalo, in times like these, you can talk to randos and realize they are pretty awesome.

I wanted to click "love it" cuz the end of your post sounds awesome and fun and amazing, but I couldn't do it cuz the beginning of the post was so sad :(
That's really awful that they keep finding people dead. All the roof collapses make me nervous too. I hope people are able to leave the building if the roof starts to give.

If I had to be stuck anywhere, I'd want to be stuck at Wegmans. I knew things got serious fast in Buffalo when I heard that they closed Wegmans earlier this week. Those stores practically never shut down.

  • I hope you all get some relief soon @themuffinman16 . I have a friend in West Seneca who sent photos, that is a crazy amount of snow.

  • Wegman's is the best! I'd have no problem being trapped in there for days.
  • My older sister was born exactly  9 months and  4 days after the blizzard of 77. When the cable is out, people have to entertain themselves, somehow. ;)

  • The totals are in for my sister's town. They got 87 inches of snow since Monday in LakeView. I had to shovel out my car, today . I only removed enough snow on the rear door of my car before my back was killing me. The snow is so dense and heavy, it was awful. I took a back pill and baked a loaf of cinnamon chocolate banana bread. No walnuts, though... I'm not a Satan worshipper.
