When my brother's girlfriend's daughter had her son, she named him Damyyn, took her a full YEAR to decide how she wanted to pronounce it. Finally decided on Dam Eye In. Like , REALLY?  If you have to think about how to pronounce it, choose something else.  I feel very sorry for that kid, he's gonna go through hell in school.
Yup, I'm guilty of judging in this situation!
This is how I pronouned it in my head

Ok I have to say sometimes people can't get that mad because their name is pronounced like it's spelled. I worked with a Tera so I only saw her name on paper. When I finally met her I called her like you would say Terra-cotta. She's like "No, it's Tara". She probably gets that ALL the time but she can't really be mad because how are we supposed to look at the English language and get Tara from that?
Wait, those are pronounced differently? Does she mean like TARR-ah rather than TARE-ah?

I used to work with a girl named Crystle who insisted it was pronounced like Crys-TALL, like the champagne. Well... that's... not at all how it's spelled. If your parents wanted to pronounce it heavy on the 'A', why didn't they spell it Crystal?
Maybe you have a midwest thing going on. I definitely say terra-cotta differently than Tara. I say it with the E, like TE-RA

I would pronounce Tara and Tera the same way -- TARE-ah. If someone told me Tara was pronounced TAR-ah, I wouldn't think it was that weird, but pronouncing Tera like TAR-ah would be absurd. And I've never heard anyone pronounced it TEE-rah ever.

Fiona. It's not a hard name. It's not an unusal name. It's the name of Shrek's wife! (SIL has always gotten a kick of this FYI)

I've got Feeonah, Feynoa, Feenah, Freena, and Fionae. What? What the ever loving fuck?!

Sophie has gotten, Sofie, Sofaie, Cophie (doesn't the C make an S sound?), and Zofie. She's also gotten Sophy, but that one and Sofie, doesn't bother because that aren't "that wrong" according to her. And once she got Soapy.

I HAVE THE SAME NAME AS YOUR WIFE!
My friends call me Soapie as a joke.
    I get Sofy sometimes. WTF

  • "Soapy" is kind of adorable and if I had a pet or small child named "Sophie" I would definitely nickname it so. But...not for an adult human or stranger of any age.

I cannot wait until the fad of inserting random "y"s in place of virtually any other vowel of a name is over. I don't think "Madysyn" is cute, you know? And I don't care if it's classist but it makes the parents, and later the named person, look uneducated in my opinion.

Agreed. Tara and Tera (which I think is a really weird spelling) would both be pronounced like Terra Cotta/Tare-ah. I do hear the occasional Tarr-ah, but hardly ever. Tee-rah, though? Nope, never.

When I first read that, I pronounced it like Damon. Then I thought "maybe it's Damian." It's NEITHER of those names?!

For crying out loud people, your kid's name is not the time to go for a high Scrabble score.

My son is Damian, and nobody spells that correctly. It's Damien, Damion, Damon, Darren, or Demon. His friends call him Macadamia Nut.

  • Tare-ah vs. Tarr-ah is similar to Ann-dree-uh vs. Ahn-dray-uh. Either one makes sense.

I'm going to start pronouncing my name "SAH-ra" just to fuck with people.
  • My email address at work is basically the first half of my last name, and my first initial.    Despite having an email signature and signing my email with my full name, I have multiple times been called Ms. HalfoflastnameFirstinitial.

My email ends in two A's so that would be a very strange last name if it were actually just my last name.

If you're squinting, it almost looks like it says Donna in the middle of my email, so I've also been called Donna a handful of times.

  • A friend of mine has a little boy nicknamed Quin. His real name is like Bob Harry Smith V. They started calling him Quin before he was born.

People misspell my name all the time, both my proper name and my nickname. At work, a manager wrote me several emails thanking me for volunteering for something and spelled my name wrong every single time. All I could think is that they must not be very grateful considering they couldn't be bothered to spell my name correctly when it was printed right in front of them.

    Ashlee, obvs.OH, or Ashleigh!!!
  • I didn't read all the pages but as a teacher, we come across many unique names. This year is a truly special year for those names.

    Pearadice
    Kelcdee
    Prahmise
    Cowboy
    Dahwuh
    Dayane

Cowboy isn't hard to spell but he's a kindergartner named Cowboy. So that rules.

Ashleigh? I've seen that a bunch and while it's kind of unconventional at least it kind of makes sense? Kinda?

I get I have an unusual spelling,  but I will never get that one.  IT'S FUCKING RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOU!!!
I have nothing to add except my favorite clip out there is that little boy saying LINDA LINDA LINDA HONEY LISTEN TO ME.

Ashlee is the main one that pops in mind. That's how Ashlee Simpson spells it I think. Also, one of the people on The Bachelorette (don't judge) spelled her name AshLee.

Is that supposed to be like Promise?  This is one of my biggest peeves about baby naming.  It's a real word.  If you want to name your child a real word, spell it correctly.  That child is going to grow up thinking that promise is spelled prahmise.

YEP. Also, based on vowel rules they learn in early elementary, Prahmise would be pronounced PRAH-MISE. Not PROM-IS. Poor kids.

Quin like the prefix for 5 of something? Hm.

I dated a Jr. who really wanted to name a future hypothetical son after himself and nickname him Trey. Sorry dude, not naming my kid Ronald, no matter what the nickname will be.

I will never understand why people want to name their child one thing, but exclusively call them something else. I have a coworker who did this, and I just want to be like "IF YOU WANTED TO CALL HIM ALEX, WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST NAME HIM ALEX????"

Freshman year of college during the first day roll call... prof calls out "Stephan? Is it Steven or Stefan, or do you prefer Steve?" Dude answers "call me Alan." Oooook.

  • My FI's last name is Feeley (surprise, surprise) and I called in for a pizza once and spelled the last name like 4 times before the girl got it.  Or so I thought.  When he went to pick it up, they had nothing under Feeley, or his first name, or my FN or LN, and they finally found it under Stewie.  LMAO!

I spell the shortened version of my first name with 2 Ns where as most people only use one so I get that mis-spell a lot.  I also get "Jean" and "John" a lot.  My name is Jenn...
  • I actually have a very unique name (not in my screen name though), but not in the "I am making my kid unique with a weird spelling" that has come up in this thread. It's just not a common American name, but is more popular in Europe from what I have heard. My friend pointed out that my name was used as a character in her French textbook in high school (like the whole "So and so is doing this" or "So and so did this" to teach verb tenses and such).

Anyways, the amount of misspellings that I have seen in my life are insane. The name is not hard. It has 2 syllables and 7 letters (similar to "Caitlin"). But I don't think the baristas at Starbucks have ever gotten it right, one even wrote the name of a commonly known spice (Coriander) because the first syllable sounds the same.

The first syllable also sounds similar to "crow" or "corn", so the foreigners that I work with address me with variations of crow or corn fairly often in email, even after I email them with my full name in my signature. My manager actually yelled at someone in an email for addressing me as "Cornie" in a previous email. I could probably list 50 or so variations that I have seen of my name.

YES! My mother always said this exact phrase!! My brother's name is Jeff- not Jeffrey. She's like why would I name him that if I just wanted him to be Jeff? She used to get pissed with James and Jimmy, she's like just name him fucking Jim if that's what you want.

And for the record I don't say it like TEE-ra cotta. It's hard to type out....but I meant TEH-Ra, which to me has a clear distinction from TARE-uh

Almost everyone I know goes by a diminutive of their proper name. Kimberly goes by Kim, Joshua goes by Josh, Bethany goes by Beth, Timothy is Tim, Judith is Judy, etc. My parents named me Nicole, but have always called me Nikki, except when I was in trouble. Maybe it is just because I see it all the time, but shortened versions of proper names seems really normal to me.

I switched to Nicole in college and law school, and use it professionally. You can typically tell when someone met me by whether they call me Nikki or Nicole. The exception is DH and my close circle of friends, as they all call me Nikki because they see that is what the people closest to me call me.

I have other friends who go exclusively by nicknames given to them by their dad as children. Martha goes by Echo, for example. Most people don't even know that Echo isn't her real name. Friends call their kids almost exclusively by nicknames, like Bean and Bug.

Maybe it is a Midwest thing? The idea that nicknames of any sort would be thought weird is strange to me.
