My cuticles are always such a shitshow that it makes my nail polish look bad. It has to be a real special occasion for me to get the shit out to make them look better and then actually paint my nails.

Me too. And I'm way rough on my hands because I cook and clean a lot. I always have bare nails and I think my coworkers judge me for it.

  • I totally could not pick a favorite. My OPI & essie collection has to be over 100 bottles by now. But currently wearing Tour de Finance on my fingers and Butler Please on my toes (both Essie)

    My no chip tip-
Wait~4-5 minutes between polish coats, followed by a clear coat. The next day (or several hours later) do another clear coat. This ALWAYS a works for me, even w/out a base coat. My mani stays in tact until I'm ready to change it about 7 days later.

I usually paint my nails at night and use Essie No Chips Ahead, then after I eat lunch the next day, I brush on Seche Vite real quick right at my desk. Works like a charm. Seche is also a lot shinier IMO.

  • I don't do my finger nails because the polish never stays on very long (gel or not), but my current pedi is Essie For the Twill of it. I love that it changes color depending on the lighting. It also reminds me of a Tahitian Black Pearl!
    That is a gorgeous color!

Have you ever tried a stickey or bonding base coat?  I like CND Stickey, it works even better for me than gels!
I've tried the bonding base coat before. For some reason, my hands are either too oily or maybe I'm too rough with my nails. I'll try the CND Stickey specifically and see how it goes!
Do you use oil products in your hair? I found that when I was using a Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioner, the polish (even gel) peeled right off my nails in one big sheet - especially on my thumbs, which I scrub with more when I wash my hair. Switched to just a Moroccan oil spray (so I'm not digging my fingertips around in it so much) and the problem stopped.
This. Except that I couldn't give up the great shampoo and conditioner, so I wear gloves when I wash my hair. Yep, rubber gloves. It's weird, but whatever.

I'd have to say my favorite nail polish in my collection is Aurora by Zoya. I was wearing this when FI proposed.

Has anyone tried the new Sally Hansen Gel line?
I bought it the other day. It arrived last night but I haven't tried it yet. It will probably be a few days before I get to it though. I wanted a DIY gel kit and it got good reviews.
@duhitsd I have, and I really like it. Nail polish usually doesn't even last a full day on me, and I am going on 8 days now with no touch-ups.

    Yes ma'am! It's really nice.

I didn't have high hopes, so I was pleasantly surpried.
  • What's your favorite shade?

If I had to choose one to wear for the rest of my life, it would probably be the original Chanel Vamp from 1994.  I'm lucky enough to have a bottle but ration it out and wear it like once a year haha.

I wear all the colors all the time but I"m curious what you guys like on your nails!
Wait a minute...did I just read that you have a 20 year old bottle of nail polish? How is this possible? Most of mine dry up within a year or two :(

My favorites are Butter London Yummy Mummy (shimmery neutral) and Julep's Nellie (fuchsia)

  • I have a bottle that's about 15 years old and it's good as new. :)
Favorite topcoat, since we're on the topic: KB Shimmer Clearly On Top.

And ohmygosh I'm painting with Smitten Polish Nose So Bright right now and it's the most rich, glorious red holo in the universe.
  • Uh, where I go to get my nails done, I point to a color on a creepy wheel of fake fingernails. Sometimes they are numbered. Sometimes not and then I think they just guess and do something close.
  • Private viewing by wet n wild I think.

It's like a nude pink. I never saw another color like it. I don't buy fancy nail polish because I can't get it to not chip no matter what.

  • The cheapie Revlon stuff is my absolute favorite. I have SO many colors - my favorite is probably Grey Suede, closely followed by Hushabye Rose and Get Reddy. I really love the colors in their scented polish line, but they chip like a motherfucker almost immediately no matter what I do. But I love Italian Leather, so I try to make it work every so often.

Lately I've been obsessed with Seche Contemporary and Ulta Femme Fatale.
  • Right now I'd have to say Essence Colour & Go in That's What I Mint! but I think that's just a now thing. My go-to polish when I don't know what I want to do is L.A. Girl Blackout, but I've been trying to stay away from darks lately because I've had trouble with staining - even with base coats.

My sister just gave me a whole bunch of nail polish that my brother told her she couldn't wear with her skintone (she's much more olive than I am), but I haven't even taken a look yet. So there might be something new and exciting (for me anyway) in there!

  • For classics I also love Rimmel's French White Tips and French Rose for a perfect French manicure. I've had my set for 5 years now and it's still all going mega strong! I had the Bourgeois one before and it got too thick too fast.

I can also say that I have a new favourite in Madison Avehue by Essie.

  • I love Chanel Vamp, too!  I also have a bottle and ration it.  I also love Chanel Orange Fizz.  It's a really pretty peach color
  • My Christmas color is I'm Not Really A Waitress by OPI. Love it.

FYI it doesn't last nearly as long as an actual gel since it doesn't cure under a light, just in natural light.  If you're looking for a good at home gel kit, try out Gelish

If nail polish is closed properly and kept not in direct sunlight, it doesn't go bad.  It might separate a bit and some good shaking clears that right up!  If yours are drying up, then close them more tightly and make sure they are in the shade!

GUYS, I totally forgot about my favorite DIY nail polish! (I rarely do my own nails because I have the fine motor skills of a small child and the patience of a WAIT WHAT'S THAT OVER THERE?)

Hands down, the easiest, prettiest manicures I give myself come from the Wet 'n Wild quick dry collection. They have like 10 colors max, but the basics are in there. The beauty is in their brush, which sort of expands as you swipe and is just the right size to cover your nail without going over onto your skin. I can get the whole nail in one swoop, which is a huge problem-solver for me since the tiny motions of going back and painting corners/edges is where I fail. And the quick dry is a miracle--like seriously it dries in a minute or 2. Love that shit.

ETA the actual number of colors.

  • I like to change it up based on the seasons but some of my favs are OPI Boys N Berries, Essie Fishnet Stockings, OPI Til the Cows come home, Butter Thames, Nicole Shoot for the Moon  I have two others but without being at home not sure I'm remembering them correctly but I think they are both by Essie Don't wait up and Dutch Tulips.

  • My favorites tend to be the dark red wine type colors.

I can't think of which one I use most often, but I have 3 bottles of it at home. I bought each separately thinking it was a good color, then one day realized that I apparently keep buying the same color.

I also like bright reds on occasion.  I really like OPI's 'I'm Not Really A Waitress".

I also have some light blue & dark blues that I love.  And I have a dark grey that looks awesome and my DH loves.  If I ask his opinion, he always chooses the grey tones.

I also like the nail polish strips on occasion. One of my favorites is Incoco's 'Written in the Stars' (link).  I almost used that one for my wedding, but didn't want to miss out on the manicure trip with the girls, so I went with plain silver instead. I also use some of their more decorative pattern from time to time.  Once you get used to the strips, they are rather easy to use and I love not having to wait for them to dry.

Ohh I like that one too!

  • So....does regular gel polish make your nails stronger, or do you have to get the gel powder for that?  I have weak ass short nails because they bend and I want to try and grow them for the wedding.

  • I painted my nails myself on the morning of my wedding (teal). That was the only time in 10 years. Aparently I'm the only one who hates nail polish and manicures hahah

Gels weaken your actual nails.  Try using this nail hardener:  CLICK

Most certainly not the only one!  Lots of my friends aren't into it at all!

Oh ok, that's not the new Miracle Gel line then, that line came out a little over a year ago.  It's decent, I just found that it had to cure a lot longer under the light.  It didn't last as long as a line like gelish or shellac but was decent.  I liked their gel nail strips though!

  • I have been searching for a cool gray that's not too dark. Think the color grey that really popular in chevron patterns now. Alas, everything I find is either too dark, to brown, or too metallic.

I wear Essie Mint Candy Apple on my toes basically year-round. LOVE.

Try Essie Chincilla or Mink Mittens for a grey!
