Re: Bringing liquor-- update in the thread

  • I'm offended that a liquor(/stomach issues/brand preference) thread could in any way turn offensive. As IF!

And what am I drinking tonight? Fucking water. Again. Drink up for me, ladies. Make 'em big & make 'em stiff!
Are we still talking about drinks?

Ha! I was originally, but it's a mighty fine combo for more than just drinks, eh? ;)

Bahahahahaha the alcohol is working :)

A girl in St John (USVI) hand made them. I have 4 red, 4 wine and 3 champagne (one broke during a move).   Some glasses have fish, others have sail boats or turtles.

All of you who get to drink tonight can think of me bartending for a fancy event at a fancy hotel, going through gallons of top-shelf liquor and not drinking any of it, haha. And that is my only comment re: top shelf liquor.

I will add, though, to novella that, while I understand that GI stuff is really weird and I'm not trying to be snarky or judgey at all, I'm shocked that tonic doesn't bother you and orange juice does. There is SO MUCH SUGAR in tonic because the quinine is so bitter. It's as many calories as Coke for that reason and it makes me so sad because I looooooooove gin and tonic and I only have like two a year because of the sugar. Sigh.
Yeah real tonic is not meant to have sugar. I went to a mixology bar that makes their own tonic with no sugar and it was quite amazing. I don't know what tonic you're drinking though, because the kind I buy has 120 grams of sugar. Coke has 180 grams (based on 8 ounces for both). Not a huge difference, but the less sugar the better, for me.
You can get diet tonic with 0 sugar. Yes, artificial sweeteners and all, but I don't feel like I can get too worked up about imbibing a little aspartame with my booze, KWIM?

I tend to go for plain vodka sodas with a twist for this reason, though, if drinking along those lines. I find most regular pop far too sweet but I don't love the idea of consuming tons of sweeteners either... but if craving a gin or vodka tonic I will pick up a 12-pack of diet tonic cans, and that will probably last quite a while. Ditto for rum and cokes or similar; I drink diet - at least in part because I really prefer the taste - but I try not to drink very much of it.

I've tried the diet tonic. I can't stand the taste of artificial sweeteners. The diet tonic tastes way sweeter than just regular tonic to me, and it grosses me out :(

Have you ever done just flat water?  Stoli and water with a lime used to be one of my favorite drinks.  I don't do liquor anymore though because of my own tummy issues.  Unless it's Jello shots...cuz I'm klassy :P

No! I honestly never thought of that, even though I've done whiskey and water. I'll have to try it out! Thanks!

I have soda with everything. Soda contains no sugar but still sparkly. I have that with my vodka or gin with a good squeeze of fresh lime, lemon or orange. Sometimes I also squash some raspberries or mangoes in there. Less calories and definitely tasteful!

  • @lyndausvi‌ I just got the reference of the "usvi" in your username. US Virgin Islands, duh. Now I feel dumb.

LOL - don't be silly.     Back when I started here I lived in the VI.   But I've been back in the states for 3 years now.   Most people wouldn't get the reference anymore.

@emmaaa I had a similar thing with @lyndausvi 's name.  I always read it as "suvi" and thought it was supposed to some weird "sous vide" reference since I knew she mentioned her chef hubby before.  Then, I went to tag her one time I think and typing it out, I was like, "what is usvi??" then it dawned on me.  So you are not alone! :)

Thank you, I have been doing this and it is delicious! I'm thinking of getting into making my own tonic so I can control/avoid the sugar content. Until then, water is the answer.
