Boots!

We booked the hotel for our honeymoon last night (yay!!!). We're staying in a little seaside town in Italy with LOTS of walking (cars are banned from the town but there's still buses to go out to other towns and whatnot). So now I'm starting to think about what  I want to bring. We're leaving exactly 3 months from today! I'm so excited!

Anyway. Does anyone happen to know of a brand of boots that are specifically really comfy for walking a lot? I'm really obsessed with boots, so I have lots of different brands, but the insole part is always flat (assuming the boots don't have a heel on them). I have really high arches, so when the insole is flat I can't walk very far in them before my feet start to hurt, which makes my back hurt really bad. I've tried buying pretty much every type of insole inserts you can buy and they don't do much. So if I'm going to do tons of walking I end up wearing my North Face walking shoes which are awesome, (bought them cuz they're the comfiest things ever and somehow fit my weird high arches) but they're ugly, and just not what I want to wear.

Does such a pair of boots exist? Help, please! And TIA! :)

Re: Boots!

  • Everyone up here is going crazy over Poppy Barley boots.  I don't know much about them, but I believe they are custom made to your foot.  And I think they're a local company, so not sure if they ship to the US or how the process works.  But they're all over my FB from my friends

Thanks, I will check them out!

  • No recommendation on boots, but WOO HOO to seaside in Italy!
I was just watching Rick Steves Europe the other day and he featured a bunch of those no-car seaside towns. They look amazing!

Why not go to a Columbia store or a Dick's or Cabella's? I'd think those types of stores would carry the kind of hiking boots you're looking for.

I tried Bass Pro Shop last year and they didn't really have any hiking boots, just hiking shoes, and that's when I got my ugly North Face shoes. I don't really want hiking boots, though. Just cute boots that happen to be made comfy. I know you can get other shoes like that (sandals, sneakers, etc) that are made specifically for good foot support. But are there any cute boots made like that?

  • Why not just get a pair of really good insoles? That might be easier than finding the perfect walking boot.

I also find that something in more of a riding boot style with that inch of heel is a lot more comfortable for me for lots of standing and walking than totally flat shoes as it takes a bit of pressure off the heel.

Three women in my office have them and they are GORGEOUS. And fit perfectly, obviously. I want some too but with the distance I walk to work, they're only really practical for like a month in the fall and a month in the spring.

  • Holy cow, those Poppy Barley boots are gorgeous!
  • I don't have any boot suggestions, but have you only tried OTC insoles, or have you ever had a podiatrist custom make you some?  If you had a custom made pair you could try them out before in a pair of your favorite boots and even switch them out for shoe variety on your trip.

My insurance has never covered custom-made ones, so nope, I've never had them custom made :(

  • They're really pricey, but I absolutely love my Fly London boots.  I have the Sminx, and paid just over 400 CAD for them.  They're amazingly comfortable, I'd say equally comfortable to my hiking boots or running shoes.

  • AND, I live in Edmonton.... Poppy Barley boots will be mine, one day.

I'm pregnant though, so should probably wait and see if my feet change size before I make any new boot purchases.

My husband has sort of oddly shaped feet, and I'm wondering just *how* custom they can make them. I've wanted to have shoes custom made for him for a long time, but I just assumed I would have to order from Italy or something and they would be crazy expensive.

I would also love some boots that would actually fit my damn calves!

I just checked out their website and the custom-ness of it is based on some general measurements, like foot width, calf width, boot height, stuff like that. It's my new goal in life to own a pair of these boots. But the ones I like are $450 and with wedding expenses and whatnot, those boots will not be mine anytime soon. Sigh.

  • I need ALL the boots!

I've been refraining from buying new boots for a year and a half (since I got engaged) to put that money towards the wedding instead. Now I'm suffering shoe-shopping-deprivation and I feel like I'm about to lose control!! haha

  • I'm a huge fan of Cole Haan. Most of their products are listed as "Air [Product Name]" because they actually collaborate with Nike on their soles.

They, too, are expensive, but damn if they aren't comfy.

  • I think Clarks might also have boots that would be good for walking.

  • LMAO. This is what a quick Google search for "walking boots" returned. Seems reasonable.

I have two gorgeous pairs of Cole Haan high heeled boots.  They are so comfortable.  They cost me a pretty penny, but it was worth it.

  • I don't know about high arches, but I have a couple of pairs of Bare Traps boots and I think they're really comfortable. They make nice walking sandals - I bought a pair for my first trip to Europe. And they make boots too. They're not the most fashionable ever, but some of them are quite cute.

  • I just got some at Christmas time. Nine West outlet. They are black and semi combat boot looking just above the ankle with sweater material popping out the top. They have a half inch heel so the arch is perfect and I've been wearing them non-stop for a month. They were only $40!  I also have $100 heeled boots from Nine West that are sooooo comfy, I just really like that brand.

  • Have you seen the commercials for the Dr Scholl's stands in pharmacies?  You go on a machine, it imprints your feet and suggests an OTC shoe insert that's supposed to be close to what a podiatrist would recommend.
