So I'm absolutely disgusted by this, and I hope if it's true that he loses everything he has. I would hope the same for his parents, but there are still small children in that household.

I do, however, want to point out something. The supposed police report was actually made in 2006, yes? That's what it seems to be saying, based on my piecemeal reading of articles. Well, 2006 was nine years ago.

The Duggars' statement said the "mistakes" occurred twelve years ago.

The statute of limitations at the time, according to everything I have read so far, was three years. That three years was already up when they filed the report. Or if it wasn't, it was damn close. I would bet that the Duggars held out on reporting it as long as they could, so it couldn't be prosecuted.

    Edited to finish a thought.

The Duggars never intended to file an official report. In 2006 at the time of the report the Duggars were scheduled to be on Oprah and one of her staff members found out and alerted authorities.

Yup. My understanding is that the only reason the Duggars even talked to the police in the first place is because an anonymous tip was sent/called in to Harpo before they appeared on Oprah and the Oprah staff sent the tip to a hotline. Then they were basically forced to respond.

The incident happened when he was 14 (he is 27/28) now.   They didn't file the report until 3-3.5 years later when Harpo got the email going to expose him.

If they only made a statement/report about this because someone found out, I can't even imagine what else went on in that house with or without the knowledge of the parents.

Sorry, but you simply cannot effectively parent that many kids and know what's going on all the time.

  • FFS. I have a family member talking about how Josh has repented for his sin and should be forgiven. I totally GET why this happened.  You want to pretend sex isn't a thing, and your kids can't deny that they have these sexual feelings.  You put them all together and deny sex even exists until you are married.  Then you make the older ones take care of the younger ones, giving the older ones a lack of supervision. (except when they they are courting.) The entire way they have raised their children has raised a confused bunch  of young adults. This does not mean Josh should get a free pass.  He can still do this again.
Josh needed counseling and to be monitored. Instead, the family swept it under the rug. The Christian thing to do would be to face the consequences of their actions.
I am also thinking about an episode of the Duggars where Anne states that she takes care of the north end (feeding her children) and Josh takes care of the south end (changing diapers).  This means nothing to most fathers, but with a past like Josh's, I am wondering if everyone else finds that statement to be creepy, now.

Yeah, I know they only reported it in the first place because of the Oprah stuff, and if it hadn't been tipped off they would never have reported it, but I can see them holding off as long as possible to wait for that statute to end. You know they knew the law back and front. According to Wikipedia (I know, unreliable source) Jim Bob was vice chair of the House Corrections and Criminal Law committee in Arkansas when he was a state rep (which... would put this hot mess at the end of his term, incidentally).

I don't understand how they can lobby for laws to be created in one breath while circumventing the criminal / legal process in another.

I think Anna's statement isn't creepy because to her, he's a changed man.

Also, forgiving him doesn't equal he's forever changed, normal and allowed to do whatever he wants.    Why people think that they're the same thing is beyond me.   I can forgive DD for smacking me in the face but she still doesn't get to watch TV.

I'm not going to touch whether or not he deserves forgiveness here - but you can forgive him and that hardly means that he's back to doing what he wants to do.

Ya know TLC cancelled Honey Boo really fast after it came out that Mama June's boyfriend had been accused of molesting one of the other girls when she was a kid.

And yet...no word on TLC cancelling 19 Kids and Counting.

Because remember America, you don't just have to be white, you have to be white and have money (and some political clout) to be protected. Plus that whole "christian" thing they have to throw around.
It took them a week or two to cancel Honey boo. Give it a few days. If they don't cancel by the end of next week then I think people should raise hell.
Honey Boo Boo was a train wreck show about a train wreck family being a train wreck.

19 kids and Counting is a nice show about a nice conservative Christian family being nice and conservative. Sure the gays don't like them, and the homo lovers, and the godless liberals. But they've got a lot of people defending them. Oh Josh was young, oh it happened 12 years ago, oh it't normal teen behavior, ect, ect.

It was easy to cancel Honey Boo Boo, no one was jumping to their support. People are supporting the Duggars.

Mmhmm. This is exactly why I am skeptical that they are even considering cancelling.

But does anyone think it's odd that is took another 7 years for it to come out?  Did they not inform TLC?       It's just so strange how Harpo got the email, but no one else?  It's just coming out now?

    Very strange

They were set to appear on Oprah, someone sent the email or letter or whatever, Harpo forwarded it to the authorities. The authorities did an investigation but I believe even by then the statue of limitations was up. There wasn't really anything they could do.

Someone must have alerted InTouch, who got the police report through the Freedom of Information Act. I wonder how much of it has to do with the two daughters being married, maybe their husbands found out and that was the catalyst.

  • I REALLY hope they cancel. It's not like these are baseless allegations or tabloid gossip. This is the real deal. The Duggers have admitted it.

I would hope that TLC would lose significant viewership if they don't cancel it. And even if they don't foresee that in the cards, I would hope they'd cancel it simply because it's the right thing to do.

I think they should write him out of the show (which I hoped even before this!) but the rest of the kids don't deserve backlash.

In fact, I really hope they deal with it ON the show, because I really want to hear from the girls!

They even wrote a book, "Growing up Duggar" - WHAT???

But that is kind of my point.   Even if the statute of limitations was over criminally,  I can't believe it didn't still come out sooner.  Sure criminally nothing could have been done, but Jim-Bob has made MILLIONS in TV and book deals over his "prefect family".   Why didn't the same people email the Today Show and TLC to say they are not as prefect as they seem?  They contacted Harpo, why not those networks too?

There are still younger girls in the home.  Based on how they handled Josh, I wouldn't trust them to handle another problem.

I read somewhere that InTouch made their FOIA request the same day that one of the victims asked a court to expunge the police report. It's kind of a chicken-or-the-egg situation, but I wonder if someone caught wind that one of the girls was trying to have the records destroyed and decided then to tip off the media.

I see what you're saying. It's possible they DID email the Today Show and TLC and neither one responded. The Duggars are cash cows for both of those shows, of course they aren't going to do anything to risk that.

It's like anything ugly -- sometimes the people who have the power to blow the lid off of it instead ignore it because it's easier. Look at Penn State -- allegations were made years before but nobody did anything.

Um, cancelling the show would not be backlash towards the kids at all. Frankly, they are better off not on TV.

The parents, however, totally deserve the backlash. They knew about this shit and did nothing.

    exactly.

And if you think those kids WANT to be on TV I think you would be sadly mistaken.   Those kids are NOT ALLOWED to be unhappy in public.  They are NOT ALLOWED to question what their parents say.  Dad says we are going to be on TV and you WILL be happy, that is what they do.

I'm sure a bunch of them would be relieved not to be on TV anymore.

Not to circle back to the sex ed chat but as a teacher my school computer is blocking a lot of articles on this for certain "code words"...

Harpo? Is that a person? Organization?

I posted it a few pages back.  In 2002 when this occurred there were only 5 girls in the family.

    Jana 12
    Jill 10
    Jessa 9
    Jinger 8
    Joy 4

So yes, Joy would still be underage.

In the police report, the Investigator is coloring with two of the victims as an ice breaker. You're only going to do that with young kids and the investigation was 3+ years after the abuse. So, yes, I believe both of the youngest girls (at the time) were abused.

That's my understanding, too, and for that, kudos to Harpo for responding the way they did.

I read somewhere that InTouch made their FOIA request the same day that one of the victims asked a court to expunge the police report. It's kind of a chicken-or-the-egg situation, but I wonder if someone caught wind that one of the girls was trying to have the records destroyed and decided then to tip off the media.

I think it probably was Joy with her parents coercion. I don't think the family wants anyone to know that he molested a 4 year old. Because, to them, the older sisters would be more forgivable. (what with getting breasts and asking for it.- heavy sarcasm).

Does this mean that one of the victims is still a minor? If so that means he touched someone who was 5 or younger.

I posted it a few pages back.  In 2002 when this occurred there were only 5 girls in the family.

    Jana 12
    Jill 10
    Jessa 9
    Jinger 8
    Joy 4

So yes, Joy would still be underage.
Yes, I think this has got to be it. So fucking sick.
This was back when they lived in the 3 bedroom house.  They basically had a common sleeping room.

When they moved to the big house the girls got one room, boys the other.     I can't help to wonder if Josh is the reason why?   I mean, sure that is what normal people do, but they are not normal.

I do feel bad this is all public for the girls.   It's hard enough to deal with something like this, in such a public forum, it's just so sad  :(

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
