What's on your summer to-do list?

Re: What's on your summer to-do list?

  • Most of the summer things are wedding related or moving related. Weeding through my things to toss, donate or sell is my top item right now.

Other than that, FI and I are planning on going to some state parks to hike. There's also a local trail I want to ride my bike on, and I want to eat a lot of grilled pizza.

  • Wow everyone is so ambitious! The only things I really have are: keep my garden alive, and get a tan.

I'd also like to: lose weight, but that never seems to happen.

What kind of stuff did you plant?

We've had a rough start this season. A weird late cold-snap killed a bunch of my lavender, half our basil spontaneously died (which has never happened before), all our cucumbers died for no reason so we planted new ones (those are going strong so far, fingers crossed), and a damn bore got our cherry tomatoes (also never happened before). Everything is fine so far, again fingers crossed.

I have a few things from last year that came back:

Lillies, lavendar, hydrangea, random other small things (and my crab apple tree).

But my grandpa is also trying to get rid of some of his tomato plants as he planted too many, so I will take a few of those. And then just fill out the rest of the garden. We aren't doing a lawn, and our front yard isnt huge, so it will just be plants & mulch. Right now near the porch where all the lillies and other things are it looks okay, but the rest is pretty bare!

We've been lucky and had an amazing growing season so far. Unusual for us!

  • Oh, we signed up for the City Chase race in our area.  It's kinda like the Amazing Race in 1 day where you have to run around doing different challenges to finish with a certain number of points or something.  I think the super fast people qualify for a Nationals version, but I thought it would be something fun to do with DH and see more of the city.

  • Since the seller of the apartment we wanted to buy didn't accept our offer, after we get back from the HM we will continue our search for a place to buy.

I can't wait to start putting up everything we got for the wedding and HM in their place and hopefully host a dinner party :)

I am also doing clinical research and I wish I had time for scrapbooking or cooking classes!

  • We have lots (like, everything) left to do as far as the wedding thing goes, so definitely crossing a bunch of stuff off that list needs to happen. I'm trying to conserve every vacation day possible and keep them all for the honeymoon, so I have an unrelenting stretch of busy work weeks ahead, but we just moved and so I have LOADS of plans for exploring and taking advantage of living in a real city type city again! A lot of those plans revolve around food.
  • I am pretty jealous of everyone that said relax! Sounds like a great summer plan. Last summer I was only in the states for about two weeks so this summer will be really different. So far it has been in the car, memorial weekend drove 12hrs to visit FI's family, last weekend drove 8hrs to visit my family, next weekend drive 8hrs to work out of the office, weekend after drive 13hrs to visit FI at work. After that fun I get a week in Sonoma with the girls, and then it's all house projects! Cleaning up a yard that hasn't been worked on in 2 years because the house was empty when we bought it, clean out the basement, and build a poker table for FI for his birthday.

I used to work some of the stations, they are so fun! Good luck!

  • I would like to sign up for a 5k or 2 for the summer and get my SO to do one with me. I want to take my son to the beach for the first time, probably go to Sesame Place & do other kid friendly activities. Mostly I just want to enjoy the weather with the kiddo and drink lots of sangria.

I also need to finish up some home renovation projects- staining my kitchen cabinets & painting.

  • So everyone saying "We're getting ready for a race/marathon" I'm sitting here like "IN THE SUMMER". Then I remember not everyone lives at the gate to hell and won't see 120 degree days this summer.

I get confused when you guys talk about how horrible the winters are too, cause ya know...sunny and 60 is a cold winter day in my world.

When I see the race/marathon posts I just think psh, this guy would have to be chasing me for me to actually run:

And then I feel like a lazy asshole. Because I am.

I live in an area where it doesn't get like the gates of hell, but the humidity is down right miserable.  I couldn't imagine training for a marathon/race in such gross, thick, heavy conditions that humidity causes.  But then again, if you train in that crap (either high temps or heavy humidity) and your race isn't until like October then you could probably run faster/overall feel better in your race.

We have summer days that are colder sometimes haha. Well, for sure the spring/fall.

    - Spend time at the beach
    - Hopefully get knocked up....
    - Our first anniversary trip in July!

Our humidity is like 38% today and I am very whiny about it. I would probably rather take my 120 dry over humidity.

ugh, it was in the 60s today but 95% humidity and I forgot how  much I hate 95% humidity.

Our humidity right now is about 50%.  We had a large storm last night which made the humidity go down some.  But by the weekend we will be at about 65-70%.  Not cool, not cool.

We have super high humidity here today too, which is pretty normal. So here's my hair today:

I haaaate humidity. Blugh. And it's indeed very hard to train when it is humid. Up here, "race season" is like March to November. In July, races will start at 6:30 or 7am to avoid the heat. I have several friends who run in Florida and the race season is exactly opposite. My friend in Orlando trained for an October midwest marathon and would get up at 4am to do a long run, then go back to bed at 6 or 7 and sleep a few more hours. Even I draw the line at that madness.

  • I do not miss east coast or NOLA summers at all.

I'm loving mountain summers.  Low humidity, moderate temperatures.  Sure we hit high 80's every now and then, but for the most part it's comfortable here.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I'm off in the summers but I still want to keep busy. After H leaves for work I plan to take my dog and walk the board walk so both of us can lose weight. I also want to work on my gardening. For fun H and I are seeing Def Leppard and Bryan Adams in concert in July.

August we're going on our honeymoon to Hawaii. We'll be there for 10 days.

    September school starts up again.

  • H and I need to shit or get off the pot. We either need to pack up and move across the country like we want to or buy a house here because of family. So my summer plan is to make a dammed decision.

Also I'm going out of town for a few concerts coming up. My sister has a lake "house" (trailer) so I hope to go there a lot this summer. I didn't go at all last summer.

We're in a really similar situation. We've both gotten to the point that we hate our jobs and there's not much room for growth at our current company, but there's really no job opportunities in this area (small town in the middle of nowhere) -- but-- we're near family, which is nice.

So for the past 2 years we've been talking about just moving away. Like, far away. And now we're looking at jobs and real estate in other cities. We just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

  • So much I'd like to accomplish:
    • Clean out the closet and get rid of a bunch of old clothes
    • Finish unpacking boxes from the move (3 months ago!)
    • Work in the yard (lots to do there)
    • Adopt better eating habits and get moving more
    • Try to stay focused at work, since the summer is a slow time for me
    • Figure out where we are going for our 1 year anniversary in October
    • Take a few quick beach trips to keep me sane

No plans, but probably need to find some. With the wedding over now I think I might just enjoy not having much to think about.  Have a work trip in a month to MN but that's it for travel, not sure if we'll go anywhere this summer if anything just a long weekend.

Need to get back into running more, might start marathon training again. I said my last one was my final but I'm sort of thinking one more, so we will see.

  • This summer is going to be boring. I'm taking the highest level math class for my major and math is my absolute worst subject. It's also my second to last semester before I graduate, so my summer goal is mainly to just pass this class and live to tell the tale.

I'm also booking a tasting with my baker tomorrow and their next available weekend appointment is August 1st, so I'm hoping to book all the rest of my vendors and get as much wedding stuff done as possible.

Losing another 5-10 pounds would also be great!

Bleh. Math was always my nightmare in grad school. I remember crying and drinking a lot. Best of luck!
