Halloween candy

So, I've been thinking about this a lot. DH and I were talking about how our neighborhood gives out really good candy for Halloween: none of those icky peanut butter taffies, Dots, etc. And I said "I mean, someone apparently gave out Mounds, which are gross, but at least it's quality candy." And DH took umbrage, on the grounds that Mounds are allegedly good. Nope. Nope, nope, nope. But then it came out that he thinks Butterfingers are gross, which was surprising. They're not my absolute favorite, but definitely edible.

So I'm curious: what kinds of candy do you think should be banned from Halloween, and which kinds that other people dislike would you defend?

Mounds are absolutely delicious and a must-have at Halloween.

I think Tootsie Rolls are the WORST and should never see the inside of a Halloween candy bowl again.

I actually like Tootsie Rolls! But you have give out a handful, not just one or two.

I hate Almond Joy. Why are these a thing? They were in the mix bag from Costco with Snickers, KitKats, 100 Grand, Twix, and Reese Peanut Butter Cups; who would include an Almond Joy with that lineup.

I don't like Almond Joy or Mounds or the others you mentioned like those orange/black wrapped taffies, Dots, or milk duds. My H apparently doesn't like Butterfinger, I knew he wasn't a huge fan but I didn't realize he would actually refuse it when I offered him one a week or two ago.

Wooz loves Tootsie Rolls, for reasons that I cannot understand. When we were buying Halloween candy, she wanted the giant bag of Tootsie products. When she wasn't looking, I swapped it out for the small bag. I like Tootsie Pops (that's what DS picked), but the rest not so much.

I'm picky about coconut. I love it toasted, but not untoasted. It's the texture--it's what I imagine munching on grass clippings would feel like. DS tried a bite of DH's German chocolate cake when we were out once, and you could watch his face change as he chewed it. He spent the next five minutes picking coconut out of his mouth.

I'm not a fan of Baby Ruth, but DH thinks they're good. OTOH, I love Milky Way, and he thinks they're gross. We are agreed on the utter pointlessness of Three Musketeers.

Jolly Ranchers, Dum Dums, anything taffy or wrapped in a cheap waxy paper (I'm looking at you bad caramels), and anything that looks like I may have to toss it because it's easily tampered with. Oh, and Whoppers.

Stop putting those fuckers in the multi-candy bags Hershey. They suck and no one likes them.

My H also thinks Milky Ways are gross. I'm not a chocolate fan in general, but I don't think they're that bad.

But my favorites are Starburst and Skittles. I could those everyday (and gain a ton of weight).

My brother and I have a theory that 90% of Three Musketeers sales must come from being included in the Mars Halloween mix big with M&Ms, Snickers, Milky Way, etc. No one would buy them on their own. They're like candy filler.

YES. DS had one lone box of Milk Duds in his bag. No one in our house wanted them.

One of our big bags of candy from Sam's was like 250 skittles and starburst. H decided we should go through the chocolate bag first and open this one only if necessary. well it was necessary, but as it turned out only 1 kid came through after we opened it so he was pissed to have 200+ skittles/starburst. Skittles are my favorite candy although when it comes to halloween I like Reese cups and Snickers the best

@Heffalump My nephew LOVES Tootsies rolls. He's seven and since about age 3, they've been one of his favorites. All the delicious candy out there and he picks the worst.

@banana468 The candy that I got was a mixed bag and included Whoppers. I pretty much let the kids that came around pick their candy, rather than doling it out myself. All we had left at the end of the night was Whoppers because no one wanted them. Luckily H likes them and has been steadily eating them since Monday evening.

Three Musketeers and Milks Duds can also make their way out of Halloween.

Does anyone remember Dots? Are they even still around? ETA - @DrillSergeantCat Another Dots lover!

I'll take all.the.dots. I also love banana Laffy Taffy. I would not turn down most candy bars, but do not see the purpose of Three Musketeers.

Thank you! I also love Dots. So much. I also love Tootsie Rolls, candy corn, and Charleston Chew. I have the candy habits of an elderly man.

I think Baby Ruth, Laffy taffy, Jolly ranchers, Raisinets, Chunky (basically anything that has raisins/dried fruit in it), Bit O Honey, Good n Plenty (I like licorice, but that stuff is nasty IMO), Whoppers, and Mary Janes should absolutely be banned from Halloween.

ETA: I was disappointed by the number of Coffee Crisp in my son's bag this year. I only got three. He got mostly Smarties.

I think Dots are completely horrid, but I like Whoppers. Not nearly as much as actual, good malted milk balls, but I'll pick at them after the Snickers and peanut butter M&Ms are gone.

Oh, and sour Skittles: I could compose sonnets to sour Skittles. When we had two bags left, I put them both aside. Came back from ToTing with the kids and only one was left. DH got the evilest eye ever.

You poor Americans, in Canada our Ju Jubes are full size. I have no idea what those tiny things are, I think we use them for baking.

Those jujubes are fruit shaped. Dots aren't. I don't think I've ever actually seen Ju Jubes in the store.

I always thought it was ju-ju-bees. I had no idea it wasn't. There was the contestant on Drag Race who called herself Jujubee and that reiterated that I was pronouncing it right, but apparently not!

We don't have those candies up here so, I have no idea. Maybe it's an American pronunciation? If we do, they are call something else.

Yes (in the US anyway)! I had to google both Jujubes and Jujyfruits, but dammit I know DOTS!!

We have wine gums too. Ju Jubes have always been fruit shaped. I think the difference is that they are made by different candy companies.

Both of my kids are tootsie roll fiends. I do not understand it all.

Also, mounds are amazing and you're blasphemous.

However, I will say that I prefer Trader Joe's dark chocolate covered coconut almonds. They are *heaven*.

DefConn got 3-4 snack size bags of Utz halloween themed pretzels. He likes them, but really people? As far as candy that should be banned...candy corn (I would go back in time and stop that from happening if I could) and any dollar store/cheap candy. Buy a couple bags of the good shit and turn off your light when you're out, or don't do it at all.

DefConn got one really horrible/cheap looking gummy candy that looked suspect. DH and I made him throw it away.

I found the Seinfeld Jujyfruits!

Also, Wine Gums reminds me that Wooz used to call M&Ms "sweet gums" for some reason. We had sweet gum trees out front, but if you have ever seen them, you know that they =/= M&Ms. It makes me sad that she doesn't do this anymore. Also, DH and I taught her to call jellybeans "candy beans," but it didn't stick.

DS, meanwhile, calls M&Ms "niminiminims," which I will greatly miss someday.

We totally get the better end of the stick. (hee hee). We get a lot of candy from England and Germany, plus we have several candy makers that set up shop from England back when we were still a colony so we still make that kind of candy. We get the good Cadbury, also Kindereggs, which we can be arrested for crossing the border with.
