I'm not sure where this idea that Congressmen make bazillions of dollars comes from, but I've seen some houses where a few of them live and they're not mansions. Not to say some of them don't live in mansions, it's just not a given. <strong>And yeah, I wouldn't take a job that required me to work in another city and have to pay my own way home all the time.</strong> Especially if going home was also required for the job.

I wouldn't want them to have to pay to come home every time either, but yet I didn't clarify that it my post. They can still use their own car around town or pay for a cab. Also, I'm sure that a lot of meetings with their state counterparts could be done via videochat. Obviously they would still go home to see their families, but we should be using technology as much as possible to help cut down the debt too.
In Response to Re: Dear Congress... : My mom listens to this crazy conspiracy theory radio show in the wee hours of the night when she can't sleep and for Christmas this year, she bought H and I this 72 hour emergency kit thing.  It's a red backpack with meal bars, bottled water, some fancy windup flashlight, a super warming aluminum sleeping bag, etc.  It's to get us from here to my aunt & uncle's house in the mountains of VA.
Posted by FutureMrsTR
Those are actually really smart, in terms of if a disaster happened. In CA, because of the earthquakes, they have billboards and tv ads urging people to make a kit to allow each of us to be self-sufficient for 72 hours in case of disaster. It's always possible that help will not get to you before you are in desperate need of clean water and food, or a blanket or way to warm yourself.

However, an emergency kit for the end of the world? A little cray-cray, IMO!

Manda, I feel like part of it is because millionaire politicians tend to be very visible - people like the Bush family, and the John Kerrys of the world.  They have a lot of money, but the didn't get it working for the government.

I remember being shocked when I learned in school that the President only made $400k a year (and I admit to not knowing what he makes now).  Granted, he gets a lot of benefits with the office, but when you think about the responsibilities he has to deal with versus, say, your average Fortune 500 CEO....

Honestly if you read into the history of American journalism you'll realize that never ever was there such a thing as unbiased media. A free press we have always had, but an unbiased one, certainly not.

The bigger threat than personal bias from each individual journalist is large-scale conglomeratization. When fewer and fewer news outlets are spending less and less money to report the news we're all in a lot of trouble.

It's very hard for a congressman to stay in touch with his constituency via teleconferencing.

Meetings with their staff or state politicians aren't the only thing they travel for.  They travel home so they can be visible in their communities.  And that can't be accomplished via technology.

What makes you think they don't drive their own cars? A few people in leadership have government cars, but the vast majority of members use their own vehicles. And they aren't going home to chat with the state legislatures, they are going to do townhalls and talk to constituents. And a lot of constituents want face time.

The idea of not paying politicians to travel back and forth between two places they need to be is insane and would have no effect on the budget whatsoever.

We gave GE 3.2 billion dollars. How much does travel cost?

But, what, are they going to have staff drive around a laptop computer so they can talk to the people who voted them into office "in person"?

<div>Imma use an extreme example of this to illustrate why teleconferencing with your district isn't the same.</div><div>
</div><div>So hurricane Katrina happened a few years back. You probably looked at newspaper photos and said, "my, that's horrible". You probably saw people in charge of the relief efforts talking about how horrendous it was. You might have shed a tear or said a few prayers for them.</div><div>
</div><div>I went to Biloxi a month after the storm, to help people repair their homes. You can NOT know from a photograph what it was like down there. You can not smell a month's worth of rot. You can not drink, cook, and bathe in aluminum-canned water. You cannot see the glowing red X's on homes that tell how many bodies they found inside. You can not hear the pain and at the same time, grace, in the voices of people who have nothing left in the world.</div><div>
</div><div>You can not know, without going home to your district, what your constituents really want and need.</div>

There's no date in the Bible, but the Mayan calendar ended on December 21, 2012. My reasoning for that is they got bored. Just think about how far away the year 2012 was for the Mayans. They probably felt like they wasted a ton of time making calendars they would never use. lol

Rosie, yes what you said about conflicting information and misinformation in the press. It's really hard for someone who doesn't understand politics much to begin with, like me, to understand what the news outlets are telling me because they all seem to be saying similar, yet different things. Plus, there is always a history and backstory to everything that gives deeper understanding of every situation and it feels like I'm getting sucked down the rabbit hole trying to find everything to make me understand.

Clearly the part of my brain that should have been allotted to politics and how our government works has been annexed by the part that wants to learn how to shear a sheep and felt myself a wool coat.
