FFF

Because I need an outlet.

I flame PRBright, for asking if Chernobyl was a real place. When ahstillwell said she wanted to go there on her honeymoon, she said "Make sure you take a video camera so when you die a gruesome death we can send it to Hollywood! Money in the bank." First of all, how do you not know Chernobyl is real? Second of all, are you serious? We all know that ahstillwell works in cancer research, and sees real people die from cancer all the time. ~ Credit to Yaga, from the Grave.

I flame LoveBug for DDing a KUI thread. Because WTF?

Whoever PRBright is, I guess she doesn't know I'm a cancer research nurse, as I honestly can't say I've ever seen her around before. Should... should I know her?

Also, one of my coworkers who is a mere six months older than me told me today that she didn't know what Chernobyl is. How does this happen?

Also PRBright needs to be flamed for spelling it 'Chernobyle' even though it had been spelled correctly earlier in the thread.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be sarastic or not, but if it's serious - I agree. I can honestly say that I had not heard of Chernobyl before this thread and briefly felt stupid for not knowing. With that said - I don't think it's unusual for someone to not know every piece of history that's ever happened in every country. I don't remember learning about this in school. If a person hasn't learned something, how can you expect them to KNOW about it?? It makes me feel like I should be nervous to ask about something here that I may not have heard about before (which is why I use Google, before even bothering to ask).

Chernobyl was a huge event that had long-lasting ramifications for nuclear power and the fall of the Soviet Union. Even if people didn't learn about it in school, when the tsunami happened last year in Japan, Chernobyl was brought up again because of the Fukushima Daiichi meltdown. There was a lot in the news about it. I don't know how something like that can be overlooked with recent reminders in place, but maybe it's just because my interests are East Asia and the Communist bloc or... something.

I obviously heard about the tsunami, but didn't watch enough coverage or read about it to hear anything about Chernobyl. I HATE the news. It's depressing and makes me sad, and honestly I find it pointless for myself to feel horrible when there's nothing that I'm going to be able to do about it anyway. That probably comes across as naive and heartless, but I guess I just feel I'd rather focus my energy in areas where I can make a difference, like sponsoring a child in Lesotho and donating to homeless shelters/animal shelters, for example.

I'm all for making a difference and identifying where you can do good with what you have, but I also strongly believe that you should learn to appreciate your place in the world by learning about what's going on elsewhere, and that means paying attention to what's happening in other countries. I think people do themselves a great disservice by not taking the time to learn new things on the daily.

Another thing: how can you find where you can make a difference if you don't open yourself to learning what's happening around you? How did you find out about Lesotho? What do you know about Lesotho? A lot of people have never even heard about Lesotho, as it's a very small country that's even completely surrounded by a much larger and much more well-known country (South Africa). There has to have been some way that Lesotho came into your life, and surely if you sponsor a child there, you keep your fingers on the pulse of that country. If you do, have you learned about the countries surrounding it? There's a lot going on in Africa right now, a lot of very interesting things.

Maybe I just don't get it. I love knowing what's happening around the world. The world's a pretty baller place.

  • Flame away. I never said I don't care about the hardships that other people go through. I'm not ignorant. Like I said, I choose to focus my attention on events in which I can actually make a difference by donating money, etc... Me paying attention to every news story all over the world is going to do what, exactly? Sitting on the couch with my face in a story isn't going to do a damn thing to change the hardships that others are dealing with. As I understand it, April 1986 is not a current event.
