In Response to Re: Republicans cannot be this stupid. : See, I don't like that. I don't think it's cool to use potentionally slur-ish language or nicknames around somebody but then expect them not to do it. That's kind of why I get pissed when black folks will call each other n*gga in public, but then if a white dude was to roll up and do it they'd be ready to box. Don't use the word or allow it to be used around people if you're not okay with it being used by them.
    Posted by NuggetBrain
I totally agree with you. That's one of the reasons they were shocked that I used that term. We'd previously had a discussion about the n-word, and they knew my stance. They thought I was being hypocritical. I did point out to them that this was the perfect example of my opinion. They don't use the n-word and think coconut is not as bad or as offensive a term. That's what they said when I asked. They also think it's funny because FI is the only one of his close group of friends who is "African-American" in that his ancestors were slaves while the others are more recently from the Caribbean or Africa (they immigrated themselves or their parents did).
In Response to Re: Republicans cannot be this stupid. : Maybe not to focus, but it is relevent when people are all "I don't understand so stop making a big deal out of it." There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying "You don't understand." Because you DON'T understand. I can academically or logically know, for example, that being called a Jewish slur is bad and painful, but I don't really understand what it feels like. Because it's never happened to me. But I can say "I don't understand but that doesn't mean that I don't acknowledge that it's a bad thing." PS Blue I am TOTALLY not saying that's what you did because you ain't racist, yo. You have black friends.
In Response to Re: Republicans cannot be this stupid. : That just seems so strange to me that certain words are 100% off limits just because someone, somewhere is going to claim "RACIST!". Again, im not really talking about that betch lady who sent the email. I am sure that she meant it in a racist way, but to say that people cannot say "He is as dumb as a monkey" just because he is black makes zero sense to me.

See, I actually think she's honest when she says she didn't mean it as a racist email. She didn't. But it was. Then she said some things about how people interpret EVERYTHING to be racist OMG, like racism isn't a real problem in society, but I digress...

The history of the use of monkeys as a deragatory comparison to African Americans is what makes it racist. It's similar to an issue that happened earlier this year on the Bump. A girl posted a pic of her FI from Halloween. He was dressed as Flava Flav. He was in blackface. Her FI appeared to be white. Some people told her it was offensive. The girl (and several others) argued that they weren't offended by it because they had never heard about black face being racist and therefore it was fine. Just because someone (the politician) is ignorant of the racial connotations of something doesn't make it fine, because the rest of society is going to judge you for it.
To be honest I took the monkey email to be implying Obama's lack of intelligence. Since it is so reminiscent of everything said about Bush I really didn't think it was that big of a deal. I do understand what Taylor is trying to say I just agree with Blue that she isn't phrasing things correctly. I think a lot of people who cannot stand Obama for a variety of reasons hang onto the birther concept because they just cannot stand him and want him to fail. I'm not saying its right but that's how I view it. I agree that his campaign organizing is ridiculous and to me just indicates how deep in the shiit he is.

Sorry, i know the convo is long past this but I just got home...as far as the part I bolded, it would be understandable if you thought that if it was just the picture on it's own.

But she forwarded along an email where either the subject line or something written within it said something along the lines of "now we know why there's no birth certificate". I don't know how that doesn't scream "OBAMA CAME FROM MONKEYS" which IS racist.

I can't understand how people taking this to mean anything about intelligence. They're talking about where he originated from, hence the birth certificate nonsense.

If someone really doesn't know the history or connotations behind something they do or say then I can understand that. Their reaction will determine my next move. If they are contrite and recognize that what they did was offensive because of whatever history regardless of their intent, then fine. If they refuse to try to see the other person's point of view and try to invalidate their position, I continue to judge them and think they're stupid or lying about not knowing.

I just find it hard to believe that people on this country don't know the racial history. However, I guess this thread has taught me not to assume that everyone does know since there were a few people here who didn't know about the history of black people being compared to monkeys

Thank-you! I have also liked some of Bill Maher's stuff, but was caught off guard by that movie, and maybe even more caught off guard it had me defending Christianity/Catholicism. What are you doing to me Bill?!

Exactly. And IMO, not knowing that black face is offensive is NO excuse. (Sorry, Cranberry, I don't think I had heard of coconut being used as a deragatory term before, either, so I'd let that slide, but black face? Seriously?) It's a perfect example of how ignorance can become everyone's problem.

  • Steph and Nuggs, ya'll need to move to Brooklyn! When FI and I walk around our neighborhood we feel like WE get the side eye for being one of the few black on black couples. Haha. I can't believe that crap is happening in 2011. I mean, really.

I would also like to point out that I was raised in a small town in Central WI. There were literally 2 black students in my entire high school (of about 1400.) They were siblings and moved after half a semester (I can't say I blame them.) Quite a bit of the town fits the stereotypical 'hick' mindset; I had never really met anyone that wasn't white (or a few adopted Asian kids... sounds bad, but it's the truth.) That's how undiverse (non-diverse?) this town was.

Regardless, I still cringed when ever I would hear someone use the N word. I can still understand how offensive racism is. I guess my point is to agree with Nugs. Just because you've never actually experienced racism doesn't mean you can't understand how awful it is.

ETA: I should add that I credit my parents for my adversion to the bulk of my town. I also hate to admit it... but I am genuinely concerned about bringing our future children home with me (not because of my parents! but because of the shtt people say). How sick is that?

Because I had something to add and thought we were havinga civil conversation. If you don't want to respond, don't respond. I'm trying to converse like a human being, and I'm actually getting a little sick of the whole, "OMG! I don't want to talk to you! Stop talking to me on a public message board!" thing when I'm not insulting you in any way and actually contributing to the conversation just as much as Cranberry did. I guess I can only respond to Cranberry, then, if I want to talk about the racism thing further.
