Monogram Snark

Now...

Let me preface this with saying, I love monogram stuff, I have a lot of it.  FI and I have been gifted some very nice monogram gifts that I love, but there are just some things that don't need a monogram.

Today, as I was driving home from work, there was a car in front of me with a personal monogram so large that it almost covered the whole back windshield of the car.  Is that necessary?

What are some things that annoy you in regards to monogramming?

It's not really a thing here, thankfully, as monogrammed anything pretty much just reminds me of the labels my mom put in my school gym clothes, camp uniform, etc.

FI gets his monogram inside his suit jackets while they're being made and I tease him about it being in case he forgets it on the school bus.

I dunno, I just don't really get wanting to have your initials embroidered on your stuff. I know it's mine already. Maybe I need more stuff so I can have trouble remembering what belongs to me?

I knew someone with a monogram tattoo. It was odd. I can see if it was in honor of someone, but your own monogram? Really?

I recently went on a retreat with my church for the high school teens.  SO many of the upper class girls had monogrammed hoodies & shirts.  It wasn't overboard, though.  I have a baseball cap w/ my monogram on it, and that's about it.

I generally find any monogram outside of jewelry, some business things, and............ nope, thats all I can think of right now, to be osentatious.

I am not really into the monogram. However, my aunt LOVES to monogram things. Everything she has given me for the past five years (or whenever she got than machine) has been monogrammed.... casserole carriers, sweat shirts, sweat pants, blankets... For my wedding shower, she gave me a monogrammed shower curtain with matching hand towels.

Is it more of a southern thing? I live in MD and don't really see it all that often here. Unless I get a gift from my Aunt.

I have a friend who's been with his gf for about 3 years now and she's DYYYYYYING to get married. Like every time we hang out with the two of them, it's all she talks about, and her nagging gets really extreme. It gets awkward sometimes cuz she'll say stuff like "Ugh Novella is getting married! Why can't I? Novella got to pick a wedding dress. I want to pick one too!" on and on.

So the last time we hung out, she said, "But I already picked out monogrammed stuff and I need to buy it! If you don't propose to me soon it will go out of stock! I want monogrammed EVERYTHING! I found monogrammed dishes!"

She talked about it so much that it really turned me off to monograms lol

I had a monogrammed LL Bean book bag in middle school. Pretty sure that was the only monogrammed thing I've ever owned.

I guess?  I really don't know, I just know that it's really big in my circle you could say.

I have never owned a monogrammed thing in my life, and have no desire to. Anytime I see someone wearing/carrying monogrammed stuff, I do a mega internal eye roll. I mean, I guess jewelry or whatever is okay, but I wouldn't wear it.

I don't like the letters of my name -  monograms look weird.  And why does the last name go in the middle??  That makes it look like ACL for me.

Admittedly though I was just playing with putting a monogram on a "just married" tervis tumbler! lol

Ehhh, I go back and forth on monograms. In part because my brother's initials are S.E.H., so when monogrammed in a formal way, come out SHE. Which just makes us all giggle.

I just don't understand the monogram.

I unless I was always losing my stuff or I was part of some royal lineage, I don't really see the point. Like, I know that thing over there belongs to me and I'm not so uber important that I need my name all over shit so....

Another vote for not a monogram fan. They bother me, and I sometimes wonder, why do they need to have their initials everywhere? Do they forget who they are and need to be constantly reminded? Why is the last initial in the middle? It doesn't make SENSE!

I digress, my least favorite monogramed item are towels. My friends have a monogrammed towel set in their downstairs half bathroom (they are not decorative, they are the only towels in sight, and there are no paper napkin thingies either). I always feel so wrong wiping my soapy hands all over their name. I don't understand the appeal, nor will I ever.

I have a few monogrammed things. A car tote storage thing I received as a shower gift is probably my favorite. Maybe it is a Southern thing? I was kind of surprised at the number of things available for monogramming on our Pottery Barn registry - like a glass cake dome. Do you really need a monogrammed cake dome?

I think it is a southern thing.  And I will admit, there are some really cute things, but then there are some very bad things...

FTR I see those car monograms all the damn time...although I've yet to see one that actually takes up most of the rear window. That'd be something! More often its the car monogram plus the weird stick families.

I live in NY and have never seen a car monogram.

    Stick families abound, however!

I'm not really a fan of monogrammed things.  I have one monogrammed tote, which I got when I was a kid, which I don't mind too much.  It's just initials.

I hate the kind of monogram where it goes small letter big letter small letter. I always thought it was absurd that you would make your middle initial bigger than the rest.  Like, I would think your last initial would be the biggest or I suppose your first.  Those two names are much more important than your middle name.

And then someone told me the big letter in the middle actually is your last initial.  Which makes no sense to me because why in the world would you mix up the letters out of order?

So those just annoy me and make no sense to me and they bug me whenever I see them.  My tote, fortunately, just has them all the same size in order.

If it's a traditional monogram, then it is the last name that's the big letter, but it's styled in the middle. So mine is JRH. The R in the middle is actually my last name initial.

I've got a few monogrammed things, like a floppy sunhat and a few tervis tumblers, and a make-up bag. I think they're cute, but that could just be my circle. I don't have one of the car monograms, but I do like one here and there. I am from Atlanta though! Maybe it IS a Southern thing.

I was attracted to having a monogram on Thank You notes, but that's where the attraction ended! I think it looks elegant on stationary, and it least it has some semblance of purpose on correspondence. Like business letterhead.

To me, no offense, but it makes me think of writing "Mrs. Nickname Timberlake" on my school binders. Or Mrs. Charlotte York Goldenblatt on my cookbook. It's about a woman bragging that she got married. Good for you, honey.

The big letter isn't really in the middle though; it's on top. If you think of it in 3d the letters are still in order. ;)

I'm not a huge fan of monograms. The only thing I own that has a monogram is a Thirty One tote my cousin got me. It' snot that I hate them, I just don't see the appeal.

I know some people who have the car monogram, Tervis', sweatshirts, hats, etc. A lot of sorority girls do monograms.

I have a friend who monogrammed her shotgun.

I had one of these too! It was blue with purple lettering. My sister had one that was purple with blue lettering. We were soooooo matchy-matchy cute! *gag*

I went to a wedding once where EVERYTHING was monogrammed... napkins, cups, vases, programs, menus, favors, cake topper, escort cards, invitations, thank you cards... EVERYTHING. I don't get it when people feel the need to personalize every single detail of their wedding. I think an item here and there is cute, but this was a bit over-the-top.

Yeah I see those a lot. I definitely think it's a southern thing. We have these huge oversized sweatshirt things with huge oversized monograms that are super popular. I'm not sure why.

I am not a fan of monogram stuff in general. Although I do kind of want monogram thank yous for the wedding. Weird.

At first I read the title of this thread as monogram shark. lol.

I've never been into the monogram thing, don't mind it on stationary and a few other things, but otherwise no desire to have anything monogrammed.  My married initials will be ANN, so that would be strange for my monogram
