FI and I had the marriage talk and decided we were both on the same page. We went ring shopping together and chose the one. FI wanted to be able to pay for it outright, and not have it dent his savings (smart man), so we made a budget to save for the ring. Once we had enough money saved he went back to the store alone to order the ring. 

We actually ended up moving to another province during this process so I was very involved in the process by necessity and desire. He initially wanted some element of surprise in the proposal but since he needed to drive 7 hours to pick it up, I had to know what was happening. The night after he got home from picking it up he gave it to me and that was that. And it was perfect. No need for anything 'hollywood' because we had made the decision together, and gone through the process together, it would have been kind of silly for him to hold on to the ring and make some grand production out of it when we had already decided together that we were going to get married.

I have nothing against people who do the surprise proposals with a ring the guy picked out. But for us all important decisions need to be made as a team, and marriage is a pretty darn big decision. So it made sense for us to go through the process of getting engaged together as a couple.

My husband had my engagement ring for 4 or 5 months before he proposed. I knew it was coming eventually, just did not know when. He was waiting for the right time. (We live in Boston and he was going to propose in April and then the marathon bombings happened, so he didn't want to do it right after that happened, so he waited until July). 

Most people I know propose the day or week they get the ring from the jeweler.
