Re: Have you picked your candidate yet?

  • I will say.. lately the crazy fringe republicans aren't doing themselves ANY favors. Like this latest crazypants man- www.cnn.com/2012/08/23/us/texas-judge-warning/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

Obama is giving our sovereignty to the UN? Come on- if you are an elected official on EITHER SIDE, I expect you to educate yourself before you spout off.

I really feel for the GOP right now. The Dems have had their share of crazies. Apparently this week it is your turn. I don't for a hot second think idiots like this dude and Akin represent the party.

  • For me, I think, it's going to come down my ability to maintain my job and income.  I'm a federal employee and our pay has been frozen for 2/3 years?  In addition, this bullcrap about not being able to pass a budget has got to stop.  Last year, I was a week away from my scheduled maternity leave before they passed a budget.  I am considered an emergency employee so I would have been paid if we were furloughed, but if I was medically forced to take leave, I wouldn't have been able to take paid leave.  I just remember thinking to myself, "Listen effers - your JOB is to balance the budget.  Do your job!"

So, I think I'd be willing to put aside my social beliefs/fears if it means that we has someone in office that actually understood a how to make a budget.

Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

kd.joseph: "Who is to blame for the situation is a diversion. They'll argue the minutia in order to confuse the issue and scare people"
This is SUCCHHHH a good point. No matter what side you/we are on. All I hear on talk shows/radio/whatever is "Obama's recession"/" Bush was president when it started"/"Obama's bailout"... how does it help anyone to look BACKWARD??? It's like a mom with two fighting little kids--I don't CARE who started it, I want it to END.

I hate politics in general. I voted for Obama last time and I do not hate what he has done. I generally mistrust politicians so I wasn't upset that he didn't make good on his campaign promises. I don't think there is a quick fix for the economy on either side. I don't know enough about economics to predict that. I think Dems and Reps need to work together and I guess I generally (maybe wrongly?) assume that a second-term president is more willing to make compromises? (No more extremist vote pandering?)

Anyway from what I have seen on this topic, I am voting for the brides of theknot.com! (What a strange write-in ballot that would look like!)

  • I like Ryan quite a bit.  I've been a fan since I saw a youtube video of a speech he gave at a finance committee meeting quite a while back.  I can't find it again - my dad sent it to me.  I am fairly liberal socially, and really believe that social issues are personal choices and should not be legislated at all, but I have always voted Republican and don't plan to change that with this election.  At this point my concerns for the fiscal future of this country far outweigh any fears that any extremist social agenda on abortion/guns/gay rights/insert topic of the week here will get pushed through.  With the level of national debt and the budget deficit continuing to push that skyward, I fear we'll soon be in a position where we can't just borrow more or print more money.  And unlike Greece, we don't have a safety net of the EU to bail us out.
I have mixed feelings on Obamacare.  Can the industry benefit from economies pushed to keep up with additional competition of insurance coops and such, probably.  I think mandating everyone to carry health insurance is rediculous, it should be a personal choice - that said, if someone has the option of health insurance through their work for $35 a month (what it was at the restaurant I worked in as a waitress) and forgoes that, but carries an iPhone with a $90 a month bill and a full cable line up, they deserve to get stuck with whatever medical bills they rack up when they get sick.  In other aspects I think it goes too far.  My company made a big deal last fall during open enrollment not only about how they now covered children up to the age of 26 regardless of student status (okay... maybe... I'll squint my eyes a little over that cause unemployment is high, more recent grads are without jobs...) but then they said they also cover MATERNITY coverage for my (hypotheical) 26 year old daughter.. REALLY?   If my (hypothetical) 26 year old daughter is not financially indepenent and on her own insurance she has no business getting pregnant - condoms or BCP or abstinence are much better options.  Yeah, yeah - oops-a-babies happen, but I have to believe they are so small a percentage that they do not warrant needing legislation to mandate maternity coverage for my (hypothetical) 26 year old daughter.  And I also think that insurance competition and regulation alone will not reign in the spiralling costs of health care in general that make it so cost prohibitive, but it's all linked together with malpractice insurance costs for doctors, administrative costs for clinics and hospitals, insurance price agreements, and probably other factors, and you can't just fix one section of it and expect to see any significant changes or improvements.
  • Nope.  But H and I have declared we'll vote for a candidate that embraces Simpson-Bowles or any other specific plan that will actually balance the budget.  All we've heard so far is political posturing without substance.
  • This post made me look up the scheduled debate dates.

Note to self: Do not go anywhere NEAR downtown Denver on October 3.

  • I think this has been an awesome discussion. I'm honestly not sure who I will be voting for yet. I don't mind Obama, and I do like the health care act, admittedly mainly because it helps me (preexisting conditions and whatnot). Romney just kind of rubs me the wrong way. I'm a bit turned off by his flipflopping when it's convenient for him (ie, the healthcare law). I know most politicians flipflop, but his just seems more egregious to me. I don't know much about Ryan yet, so I'm not sure how that will affect my decision.

Overall though, I'm sick and tired of living in a battleground state. We are being inundated with political ads. And most of them are personal attacks or misconceptions, not actual facts and viewpoint education. To make it worse, Virginia is an off-cycle state, so we'll get to go through all this political nonsense again next year. Ugg :-(

Gay people are a minority group that is legally discriminated against by our government. And even most "open minded" people see that discrimination as a lesser evil. I find the way our society treats the GLBT to be shameful. If we were talking about another minority group being disriminated against and someone was like "Whatevs it's a state issue" people would be up in arms.

Oh calm your tits.  I support gay marriage, I have many gay friends, I donate to the cause, and I worked in gay nightclubs for 5 years.

My point is that gay marriage is not the only and most important issue out there right now and just because people are Republicans doesnt mean they are not pro-gay marriage.  If my assumption is right, and the thread makes her sad because of the reasons I listed above, then pigeon hole-ing a party based off of one issue is what is closeminded.

Also- I dont see Obama doing anything about gay marriage so there is that.

All we have got is the ads for the senate race.  Elizabeth "YOU DIDNT BUILD THAT" Warren is challenging Scott Brown.

Since we are a blue state, there isnt much presidential ads, but because we share a lot of stations with NH which is a swing state, we get more than the other blue states.

  • I moved from swing state Ohio to swing state Colorado.  There's so many political ads here - and none of them actually say much of anything of substance.
  • I don't care what your personal views are about social issues, the fact is, you are supporting people who are homophobes by voting for them.

As a woman this thread made me sad because I cannot imagine so many women choosing to align themselves with men who are working to eliminate their rights.  These are men who voted against guaranteeing women equal pay.  They vote to ban abortion in all circumstances.  They hate abortion so much that they cut cancer screenings.  Our economy has it's problems, but electing men who will fix it by stepping on women isn't the answer.

As to an earlier complaint about welfare changes, well, what would you have done?  Told people, sure you qualify for welfare if you get a job, oh there are no jobs, guess you don't get any benefits.  Sorry.  Enjoy crippling poverty.  Work-for-welfare really only works when jobs are actually available.
