Posted by aprovencher21
Bummer!

I plan on taking Fridays off this summer with the overtime I  banked during tax season.  We're trying to plan a short beach trip or two but all the hotels have 3-4 night minimums during the summer.  We're going to Florida in July to visit my grandma and hopefully SarahSmile and some other Orlando-area knotties, and LilGina might be in town then, too.

Baby names . . . we're having a hard time with boy names.  If it's a girl, she will be Josephine Harper and go by Josie.  If it's a boy, he shall be the child with no name since we can't agree on anything.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

    How did you guys meet?

We first met at a party in college- he had come back to visit friends and I was a second-year student. I don't remember because I was too drunk. Innocent

A year later, he moved back to the area (from Minn.) and he happened to be at the bar my friends and I frequented. He was friends with one of my friends and sent her a text message later that said I was cute and of course she promptly showed me. I thought he was pretty cute too, so we hung out a few times and he asked me on a date and then a few days later asked me to be his gf. We actually broke up for about 2 months, but got back together and tada! Here we are.

YIO, that's a great question. I know my dad's dad was a baptist preacher, and my step-grandpa on my dad's side was in the service (can't remember which branch), he fought in the Korean war, and my dad's mother owned a liquor store. My mom's mom was a Mary Kay lady, and my step-grandpa did construction. My mom's dad was in the Navy and his wife is an RN.

MFJ - my daughter didn't have a name for an entire week because we couldn't agree on anything.  We had boy names, but had used up our only girl name, and everything the exH wanted sounded like a stripper name.  The hospital was not happy sending her home with an incomplete birth certificate.

Question- Do you (general you) know what your grandparents did for a living and how big their families were?

My grandma was a teacher, my grandpa was, um, a mechanic?  My nana was a SAHM/office manager for the paint store across the street and my papa worked for GM (and before that Labatt, woo beer!).  I acutally have no idea how big their familes were.  I know Derek's grandmother and grandfather are each 1 of 7 or 8.

Question- Do you (general you) know what your grandparents did for a living and how big their families were?

Yes, I know what they all did. My grandparents on my mom's side have very sad stories when it comes to their families, and my grandpa had to drop out of school at the age of 11 to get a job and feed his many siblings. He basically raised them.

My grandma on my dad's side has 12 brothers and sisters.

ETA--mom's dad worked for the newspaper, mom's mom worked for GM. Dad's dad worked for the Navy, dad's mom worked at my middle school in the lunch room (free cookies every day!)

Love the names Josephine and Harper!  H and I rarely agree on any names so I'm worried when we actually get pregnant what will happen.  I have a feeling me being pregnant will = one cranky bitch and I'll end up getting my way for most of the names.

    What my grandparents did:

Maternal grandmother was a school bus driver for 25+ years. She had a sister and brother.
Maternal grandfather was a foreman for a huge construction company. Younger twin brothers.

Paternal grandmother was a housewife. 2 sisters.
Paternal grandfather was military, then worked at a factory. A few siblings, but I'm not sure of the exact number.

    ETA to add family size.

Best vacation is hard.  I loved studying in Spain, because of the culture and it's SO different from our lifestyle here.  I loved Puerto Rico because it's beautiful and the people are so nice.  But I think my favorite vacation was San Francisco because it was our first real vacation together and I fell in love with the city.

What my grandparents did  - my dad's dad was a coal miner and my grandmother was actually a real estate agent for a short period of time.  My mom's dad worked in construction and then eventually because a corrections officer and my mom's mom didn't work.

My mom's dad has 6 siblings, my moms mom only had a sister.  My dad's dad had 4 siblings and my dad's mom had 2 siblings.

Best vacation - The honeymoon H and I took on Christmas this past year to Cozumel, Belize, Guatemala and the Keys.

Question- Do you (general you) know what your grandparents did for a living and how big their families were?

My maternal grandfather was a fireman and policeman and then got into banking later in life.  He had one sister Ruth.

My maternal grandmother stayed at home raising the kids.  She had four siblings that I'm still very close to.  Her youngest older brother Peter married my grandfather's sister Ruth.

My paternal grandfather was a door to door salesman of meat.  He had two sisters but both passed before I was born.

My paternal grandmother stayed home and raised kids.  She had one sister Millie.

Many pre-depression era families were huge, which is what most of our Grandparents probably come from.

My maternal grandmother (homemaker) and grandfather (worked in a cigarette factory) had 1 and 2 siblings respectively.  Paternal grandmother (homemaker/piano teacher) and grandfather (I dont' actually know what he did) had 2 and 1 siblings respectively.  However, generationally I think my family is young.  My living Grandmother turned 68 last year. Her mother, my Granny, turns 86 next week.  Granny had 1 sister, but her husband had 14 siblings.  In my family it's the great-grands that were pre-depression era.
For everyone:  what's the best vacation you've ever taken?
    Posted by jcbsjr
I've had quite a few standout vacations, but I'll only list two of them:

I did a Forgetting Sarah Marshall-type vacation in Hawaii after my divorce in early 2009. I even stayed at the same resort (Turtle Bay) and everything. I don't think I'll ever have the opportunity to take a solo vacation again, so that meant a lot to me. I did nothing but eat delicious food, lay out on the beach/at the pool, take photos, and splash around in the water. I didn't speak very much at all, except when I was ordering food or talking on the phone with family. When I flew back, I remember it hurt my throat to talk again LOL.

And the other vacation that I really enjoyed was when I went to Scotland (even though it was with my exH and his dad & stepmom). I learned so, so much about the history, tried foods I had never even heard of, and stayed at a really nice castle resort (Kilconquhar). I even got to meet a friend who I knew from online who lived in Aberdeen. We did a lot of the typical touristy stuff (Loch Ness, the Wallace Monument, Stirling Castle, the Royal Mile, etc) but also explored a lot around the little towns and even played chess at this really small pub with the locals who even had their dogs with them.

My grandparents yes, I know what they did for a living.

My dad's parents were farmers; my dad ended up taking over the business in his early 20s after he married my mom.  He paid back his own school debt AND took on my grandpa's farming debt and paid that off too.  My grandparent's farm has been under water in Devils Lake for the past ten years; nice how a three generation farm can just disappear like that.

My mom's parents - her's were divorced.  Her dad drove a bread truck after he retired from the military.  Her stepdad sold insurance, and still does on occasion.  He used to sell just random shiit - there's a story about how he sold a freezer full of meat to a Mexican family with no electricity.  He was so terrible with money (like, just lazy - he'd only work when they needed money to pay bills) that my grandma started to save a little bit of the cash.  He'd give her his checks and she'd put them in the bank, and she'd just keep a portion of the checks in cash and she started stashing it all over the house.  Her kids (my mom, uncle and aunt) finally found out about it about ten years ago, and she'd saved well over $150k.  They urged her to open an account - so she did.  My grandpa found out a few years later and instead of being like WTF WOMAN! he was actually pretty thrilled.

    Wow... that got long.

    Best vacation:

While I absolutely loved Spain, the best vacation was when H, the dog and I packed a small bag, jumped in the car and went to SW Michigan, near the lake, for the weekend. I love that area because of the wineries. The day was beautiful, the wine was good, the dog loved the long car ride and it was just perfect.

Mara, I love that story!  I love when people come back together like that.

Gradnparents--I have pretty much a limited idea.  My paternal grandfather owned a salon and my grandmother didn't work.  My maternal grandfather was a boilermaker and drove a truck for UPS, but he was a big alcoholic so he had lots of jobs, if you know what I mean. I just remember him being a ton of fun and really warm and loving. But I don't think he was the best provider :P.  My grandmother did a few things, mainly working in the offices of a bakery.

My worst injury was a dislocated shoulder. I was 'skiing' except we hadn't even started, I lost my balance and landed badly...not cool.

I have no middle name. I guess my parents thought my first and last were tough enough to spell and say.

DH and I met at work. One of my teaching partners was quite ill and had to go part-time. He was her replacement. I am so happy we met...I can't imagine what my life would be like now if we hadn't.

If I could live anywhere I think it would be here but I would love to have enough money to build my own house, on a fairly good size piece of property and have a home gym since in order to live on a good size piece of property here I would have to live further away from the gym. But building our house would be my dream. It won't happen, I guess that's why it's called a dream.

Best vacation - hands down, Maui when I was 17 for my uncle's wedding.

I swear, I'm a mermaid trapped in a woman's body.  I could live in the ocean I love it so fucking much.  Plus the tan you get in Hawaii is unlike any other tan I've had.  It's more golden, I think.  And my skin has never felt so soft from that awesome air.

Hands down my mom.  I've never really liked my dad.  Which reminds me, mom's back in the hospital again.  :(  She got dehydrated and her sodium levels dropped dangerously low.  She's in while they slowly bring them back up again.
