I'm more willing to put up with a fussy infant than I am an out of control toddler or a drunk obnoxious adult. Sometimes there's just not a great way to pacify a crying baby. Well maybe a shot of booze, but that's generally frowned upon.

Diaper changing in the seat is gross too, but I can get past that. But in the aisle, no. It's a hazard (I'm a lot more attentive to plane rules now that MIL is a flight attendant).
In Response to Re: WDYT regarding children on a plane : I promise that poopy diapers are the least of your concern on those airplane seats. ;) JCB- I'm obviously not a mom yet, but I have every intention of flying with the baby if needed. Why not? I'm not having a kid so I can ditch her for a week if we go on vacation. Going out for a date night is totally different than traveling for a week. If the mom is breastfeeding, it's basically impossible. So, we just shouldn't travel at all for, what, 4-5 years? (ETA: awkward wording- I'm not planning on breastfeeding for 4-5 years! ha I just meant... if there are a few other people that might be annoyed by the presence of a infant/toddler, am I not supposed to go on a plane for 5 years just in case? eff that.) And honestly? I think it's easier to travel with infants than toddlers anyway.
I have a question for the moms (well, anyone). If you're going on vacation, why do you want to bring your infants with you? Not kids, I get kids, beach, vacation, blah. But isn't it a PIA to drag the baby, diaper bag, car seat, etc?? And if you want a night out with just your H, then what do you do? To me, it's more of an 'I don't get it.'
    Posted by jcbsjr
Because the closest relative I have that could babysit is 4 hours away. I don't have a choice. Unless my mom or MIL is visiting from Chicago, we don't get a night off really.
Here's my issue though, most parents seem to think that because they have a kid, their spawn takes presidence over everyone else. I don't get on a plane and scream at the top of my lungs cause I'm hungry or have to take a dump, so me being there isn't negatively affecting anyone elses experience. Babies negatively affect everyones experience with that, why should everyone have to deal with that just because "you" feel the need to take your kid everywhere. It applies to all of the places I mentioned earlier. I just don't agree with this sense of entitlement that having a kid gives people, cause it usually doesn't go along with any thoughtfulness towards anyone that's being affected.
    Posted by Nebb
I completely agree with the bold part actually. I have no problem agreeing that there are places where babies/kids have no need to be. I hate friends who think that everything should change just because they have a kid.

I just don't see planes as one of those issues. I think the issue is just that planes are such a confined place. If you want to ban babies from planes, then let's also ban people who smell bad, snore, take up too much space, listen to their music too loudly, etc.
Nah, Steph, I don't think you should quit traveling. As I said before, I think babies have the right to fly. I was just genuinely curious b/c to me, relaxing vacation + baby don't equate. Our last big trip was to NYC. I can't imagine hauling a baby around everywhere and going to see shows with an infant. Of course, this comes from someone who has never wanted kids. Lol.
    Posted by jcbsjr
I agree. If I was traveling for a relaxing vacation, baby likely wouldn't be coming with us. ;)

I look at some situations differently though. My dad is planning a huge vacation with his parents and siblings. Probably next winter (when baby will be a little over a year old.) ALL of my aunts/uncles/cousins are going. Should H and I stay home just because we have a kid? Should we pass her off on a babysitter for a week? No- she's part of the family.
AATB, re. amusement parks, I don't get it if it's the first child. But, if a family had several kids and 1 or 2 of them were old enough to go and enjoy it, I don't think I'd let the fact that we had a baby stop us from taking a trip the rest of the family would enjoy. But I don't get it if it's just the parents and an infant.
    Posted by djhar
I guess I can get behind that. Or understand that. Honestly, I wouldn't do it. I'd send Ben to the amusement park with kid #1 while I stayed back with kid #2. No point in going, IMO, lol - since he'd probably take the kid on all the rides while I hung back with the beh-beh anyway. Savins the moneys.

There are pictures of me, as a 1 and 2 year old, at Disneyland. Barf.

But also, I really, really fucking hate Disneyland. Happiest place on Earth my ass.

Sitting in a shiity diaper for more than two hours is far more foul and unacceptable than changing to a clean diaper quickly, with no mess left behind. She was on a plastic pad, the seat was not soiled, and I didn't have a better option.

That's what the plastic changing pad is for, though. Again, I'm not a mother, nor do I plan to be one for a great, long time, but that's what I thought they were meant for - protecting your baby from gross stuff.

It does suck sometimes, yes. Luckily K is such a mellow kid, we can take him pretty much anywhere. We go out to eat 1-2 times a week, and he has never made a scene. If he gets a little fussy, one of us will take him outside until he calms down. Tonight we are going to an Irish pub for dinner, then to a little league game with H's CW's son.

It does mean that we can't go out to real nice places. Some places are just not appropriate for babies, so we can't go. We try to save those places for when my mom visits from NY. Unfortunately, she is also my father's full time caregiver, so she can't come that often.

The ones that are the thin paper? That an infant will grab and shred and try to eat? It is the same material that they use in doctor's offices on exam tables, and trust me, that is what they do.

Well, you've got that going for you.

I stand by what I've said: if you can't figure out a way to change a diaper in the lav, keep the baby home. It is not ok to make a toilet out of the seating/eating area of the airplane.

I'm gonna guess the people who would change a diaper on a seat of an airplane would also cry "would YOU eat in a bathroom?" during a BF'ing debate.

    HA!

And along with Steph, my step-daughter was BF and plans to till Lily is 1. She couldnt possibly leave her for days on end. And the only family they have that they trust to keep her for extended hours are myself and H. We are in Ohio, they are in SC. If they want to visit they have to take a plane.

They should either try to make it to the lav, or put it in the barf bag if it comes on suddenly.

I have a plastic changing pad. There would be no messy diaper/baby butt touching any part of the seat.

So why doesn't that work on the floor of the lav? It either works, or it doesn't work.
