having and expressing an opinion is a wonderful thing. Clearly you just don't know how to do it in a way that doesn't make you sound like a jerk. That's my opinion though.

Before Michael and I decided to have a kid, we kind of accepted the fact that long distance travel would be put on hold for a few years, barring any emergency trips that were a must. I have no desire to travel with a child that will be uncomfortable, likely I'll be uncomfortable, and we'll make the other people that paid the exact same amount of money for their flight, uncomfortable. I know my kid isn't here yet, and it's possible that'll I have to make some concessions, but for the most part, our choice to have a child = the burden of the not so pleasant moments of parenthood shouldn't be thrown on to other people if we can help it.

I've been on a plane with a kid that shiiiiit, it's terrible. Another reason that I'll try to avoid any air travel for the first few years, it's not convenient to change shitty diapers on an airplane. I don't want to eat my lunch in the shitter so I'd like for people to not make a shitter out of the only place I have to eat my lunch. I would think that most any of the airline staff would be able to help you figure out an acceptable place to change the kids diaper.

How does bringing a pet on the plane work?  You've had the dog in the airport for 1.5-2 hours and then on a plane for however long.  And then the ones that stay in their crates for long flights, do they just go in their crate?  That kinda sucks if so.

I have wondered about this too.  Since Lucy is half pug, though, and most pugs and pug mixes aren't really allowed on planes to begin with I guess I won't know, lol.

  • I've never done it, but I think bigger dogs have to be crated in the cargo area, like luggage. If a dog/cat is small enough to be crated under the seat I think that's allowable (though I haven't seen it first hand since the 80s). It does bring up issues pertaining to allergies; I'm not sure how that works. Do agree that it would suck to fly with a pet and I'd only do so out of dire necessity.

When we were on our way to Italy, we noticed this woman a few rows behind us had an unusually large bag in the seat next to her. All of the sudden, a tiny dog head popped up from the bag. I don't know how she got a seat for her dog or why they allowed it to be in that bag, but it was weird. And it was annoying because it kept yelping.

Yup, pugs and bastard pugs aren't supposed to fly :P even if they could, I'd never take vin on a plane. Too many things "could" happen and I would be a wreck.

I don't think I could either.  Since she is large enough to not fit under the seat in front of me she'd have to go in the cargo area and I seriously just couldn't handle it ;(

Ben and I have talked about road tripping to Cali and bringing the dog, lol.  We think she'd have a blast out there, my grandparents are always asking about Lucy and to bring her out one day.

  • Could be, jcb, like maybe if they weren't half and half puggles?  Like if the pug part in them was less?  I really don't know.  I've just read that most pugs and other smoosh-face dogs don't get to fly.

  • I pretty much feel the same way about pets on a plane as I do with babies. Unless you are moving, it's pretty inconsiderate to bring your animals on a plane.

  • I saw some terrible news story years ago about how a guys dog died in the cargo hold and after that I could never imagine flying with our dog.  Moose either stays with friends/family or we drive.  We'll probably never have one small enough to fit under the seat.

The only time I'd ever consider flying with the dog is if we were moving overseas but that's incredibly unlikely.

In JFK one time a (presumably) Russian lady came up to me and asked to watch her bags. I declined. A few minutes later she lit up a cigarette in the terminal. After she was told to put that out she opened her duffel bag and a small dog popped out. He started running in circles, leaving a little trail poop balls behind him. I have no idea how long she'd had him in that bag. She was escorted away by security at that point, I think they were taking her to get a suitable dog carrier.

I agree. I can't see myself ever bringing Bax onto a plane unless it was absolutely necessary. Plus, don't a bunch of dogs die in the cargo area? I'd be a worried mess the whole time.

It has to do with their breathing issues - which they already have enough of while on land, lol.  I think the changes in air pressure and what not is not good for them.

  • I'm scared that we'll be stationed in Guam sometime in the future and won't be able to bring the dogs. We could fly them but it is not safe at all. It would be safer, although harder emotionally, to leave them with H's parents until we got back.

  • I can't imagine ever bringing our cats on a flight. They only ever get in the car for the 15 minute drive to the vets and they literally cry the entire way. They are hoarse by the time we are home. It's traumatic for all involved.

  • i don't think age matters. they have somewhere to get too, you know? you can deal for a few hours. i do hate when they just let them cry though, ugh.
  • Oh wow. Makes sense though. I wouldn't want my pet to travel either. H's dad ordered their dog and had it shipped...she arrived completely freaked out and covered in her own mess Poor thing.

Yup. Pug breathing is a big deal. That's why I was freaking out so bad over vin's surgery because they are at higher risk because of their breathing. As it is, vin sleeps on his own with his tongue hanging out of his mouth because of his breathing.
  • I thought of you a few weeks ago when we were at the dog park, Nebb, because there was like 7 or 8 or someshit pugs there.  Pugs fucking everywhere.  It was like, the pug club.  But Lucy doesn't really belong because she's not full, lol.

Last night there was a pug-rat terrier mix at the park and he was so feckin cute.  And have you ever seen pug-poodle crosses?  They are so foffin funny.

Omg.  Someone shutmethefuckup because Lord knows the last thing we need here is another damn dog thread.

[QUOTE]So where are they supposed to change a diaper?

<div>I think the point was that its gross to lay your kid down in the aisle of a plane, not that its gross that they changed the diaper on the plane.  </div><div>
</div><div>When FI and I traveled last summer we saw people letting their babies crawl on the floor of the airport.  I literally almost dry-heaved.  I cannot even imagine the filth on the floor of the airport and would never let my child put their hands on the ground there!  I'm not a complete germ freak, but seriously, that is disgusting!</div><div>
</div><div>Even my middle sister with ADHD was able to behave herself on a plane as a barely three year old.  She talked non-stop for the entire flight and maybe annoyed a few people, but she didn't screech or cry throughout the flight.  There isn't much you can do for an infant but the behavior of an older child is the result of the parenting.</div><div>
</div><div>But just because a kid doesn't know how to behave on a plane doesn't mean they don't have the right to travel...</div>

I'm hoping we never really have to deal with it but it's such a tough decision. I would hate hate hate to leave them in the states but I would never be able to fly two 75lb dogs that have anxiety issues all the way across the ocean.

I was reading something about this the other day.  I had no idea some flights require the person to take their dog into the plane with them - they do not ride in the cargo hold, I guess.  I would sit in a plane full of screaming babies with crappy diapers and bratty kids sooner than I would in a plane full of various dogs in the passenger area.

I have nothing against dogs, but I am picturing mine on a plane - yapping incessantly because they are in a crate, in-between puking all over because they get upset when they travel.
