You weren't supposed to. But if you're going to hang out in a certain place it's much more fun for people to like you in that place, no?  You put strong opinions out there, so don't expect people to not have an opinion on your opinions or you as a poster. Don't take it so personally. I know that sounds silly when it looks like this is a personal attack, but I promise it's not. When you put yourself out there, particularly on the big, international boards, you get feedback (sometimes warranted, sometimes not) about yourself whether you want it or not.
I have a grievance with lumping HP in the same category as Twilight. I love HP (the books. the movies are ok.) JK Rowling did an amazing job writing them. Her story, details, imagery, everything was fantastic. Now, I can't actually bring myself to read Twilight, but I've heard from several people I respect for their writing abilities that it's terribly written. Also, I don't see nearly as much HP merch as Twilight nonsense all over the place. Regardless, if you were JK Rowling or Stephanie Meyer and had the opportunity to have your work all over the place, wouldn't you?
Posted by LedZeppelin
I agree with this. I also think Twilight is incredibly disturbing from a feminist point of view. If my teen were ever reading it... well, we'd have to talk.

• Kcullen, if you had seent he responses in the thread, we were arguing with that assessment. I mentioned that HP is NOT children's literature - they are marketed to children because the main characters are children, but JK Rowling didn't have an audience in mind. It's obvious you've never read the books.

Even though I've read all of the Twilight books and seen the movies, there's no way I'd let a child of mine read them. The absolutely atrocious and horrid way SM develops this 'relationship' between Bella and Edward is just... It makes me cringe to think that teenage girls everywhere are going to look at that relationship as an ideal one and try to follow it. God help us.
•   I read Goodnight Moon and My Very Own Potty everynight so I'm not in a place to judge what others read.

That said, I don't really care what others choose to read, or what other money springs from that. Good for the authors, I say, they don't make enough money as it is.
• I like the Twilight series............

See, this offends me, as if somehow reading HP somehow puts a tarnish on your ability to see someone as an intelligent adult. Why not just say you don't like the books, and then move on? I'd imagine that if we picked apart all of your taste in everything, we'd find some non-intellectual things.

• KCullen I dont think anyone has a problem with your aversion to the YA books.  I think it was more your particular stance on adults reading childrens/YA books.  You had said something along the lines of "Adults who read them are (insert offensive part)"  Im too lazy to find the quote.

People were just looking for clarification.  I tried to help you out in that thread by saying that maybe you meant adults who ONLY read YA books, but you just got really defensive.  Usually on this board, if you say something that comes off the wrong way, you clarify and all is forgiven.  But it seemed to others that you had no interest in clarifying what you meant, so people assume you wanted to be judgmental of their reading choices.

And thats why you are getting flamed by them.

• Cullen- The other day you said "I'm so sick of this crazy "Christians" and their irrational hatred of homosexuals. I know they're just internalizing their inability to accept their own same sex attractions and therefore lashing out at those of us who can, but really, grow the hell up or shut the fuuck up." in regards to the gay-bashing school board guy (link for anyone who's interested).  I feel like I should set you straight on this.

1.  Not all Christians are crazy, nor are they all homophobes.
2.  There are plenty of non-Christian homophobes in this world.
3.  Not all homophobes are closet homosexuals who are just frustrated.  There are plenty of irrational reasons to hate someone without secretly wanting to be that person.

Bella's depression makes me depressed because I know there are teens who are all "Omg, this is the best relationship ever and I want to be just like Bella." • Not liking HP is one thing, but questioning the intelligence of people who read them is completely farfetched. Enjoying HP as an adult =/= unintelligent, intellectually lazy, or any other negative connotation regarding mental capacity. You're entitled to your opinion, certainly, but making blanket statements like quesitoning people's intelligence over liking HP (which are generally agreed to be well written books) is just closed minded and ridiculous.

• When I read, its only Dexter books and trashy romance novels. I read for pure enjoyment of hearing a story. I guess that makes me an idiot. Go figure.

I don't like HP or Twilight, but I don't judge people who do. Taste in literature and art is a very personal thing. kcullen, the judginess is what is being called out, not your opinion on the books. And if the merch gets kids to read, so be it. I remember having a Sweet Valley High Trapper Keeper, and a Babysitters Club backpack. Both were book series that I really enjoyed and having the merch only reinforced it and made me more excited about reading more.
Cullen- The other day you said "I'm so sick of this crazy "Christians" and their irrational hatred of homosexuals. I know they're just internalizing their inability to accept their own same sex attractions and therefore lashing out at those of us who can, but really, grow the hell up or shut the fuuck up." in regards to the gay-bashing school board guy ( link for anyone who's interested ).
