I'm not going to lie y'all, I sometimes judge based on the label thing.  Not always, not even most of the time, but sometimes.  If I got a labeled invite similar to what Shay described, I'd probably have a completely different reaction than I had to the one I received last month that was a crooked white label on a cream envelope with our name spelled wrong.  (and yes, we're declining the invitation, although not only for the label).  If I can tell that you care, then I'm not going to judge based on a label.  But, I'd personally rather receive hand-written chicken scratch then most of the labeled invitations I get.
    Posted by pirategal03
I agree with this.

Im not a big fan of labels to begin with, but if its at least done with care, meaning not crooked and at the very least spelt correctly, than I can overlook.  I would rather receive a hand-written one though....it just seems more appropriate to me.

  • Wow, just when I thought I couldn't like you ladies any more!  I thought for sure I'd hear at least one: "But think of all the marriages it will ruin!!!!"

I hate that argument.  Prostitutes don't break up marriages.  The only people who can end a marriage are the husband and wife.

  • I don't really care about labels or most of invitation etiquette although I will try to follow it for mine.

I do not know entirely the case France had for the ban but I am not altogether against it. I really think it depends on the reasoning behind it so I can't at this point speak about that ban in France.

I would like to see a ban on wearing one in photo ID, in court, things like that. I am talking about the burka. (full coverage where you can't see the person's face)

The Muslim people that I know actually don't wear it and are also against it. What it represents for them is nothing positive. Others feel differently and if it were possible to find out who is choosing to wear it and who is wearing it for other reasons this would be easier. It's just not an easy topic.

  • I agree with the printed label thing, I don't give a damn if they are handwritten or printed. And I don't even care if the writing is sloppy. If the invite got to me, then that's all that matters.

I think I'm a little more forgiving on handwriting and printing them because personally, it's extremely painful for me to handwrite. With beginning stages of arthritis and carpal/corpal tunnel issues, writing one address causes hand cramps and spasms. So if someone were to judge me for printing labels versus being in pain writing 100 addresses (and not being able to afford a calligrapher), then so be it.

I think that having prostitution be illegal is actually hurting women.  I watch those shows on Lifetime and TruTV and Discovery about prostitutes and how their pimps beat them, and their customers will leave without paying and rape them, and how unsafe it can be out on the streets.  Imagine if you took the pimps out of the equation by making brothels legal (like in Vegas), and they'd have to get paid up front, and they'd have to undergo drug and medical testing, and they'd always have access to condoms, and they'd be in a safe enviornment. And if they do decide to quit, they don't have to worry about Big Bubba beating the crap out of them for trying to leave. Prostitution is NEVER going to go away.  Ever.  The least we can do is attempt to make it safer for the women.

I prefer printed labels. I once told my 5th grade teacher who was insisting I write in cursive, "do you want me to write in cursive or would you like to be able to read it?" My handwriting is legible, but I think for something formal it isn't good enough and I don't have the cash to hire a calligrapher. I'm also told I write like a lefty (upside down hand) but have tried caligraphy on my own and failed...hard. I look at the labels as another decoration.

  • Levi's. I like the 553's. No jewels, unneccesary ripping, wearing or tearing in any place, no jewels, sparkles or weird "graffiti" like paint on it.

    You're welcome.
  • Polygamy I can't say, but I would in no way be a part of it.

Prostitution I do not want to see legal. I don't agree with it and people can't be 100% assured disease free only that at the time of testing they were disease free.

Many of the young girls involved in the trade do so because of reasons other than wanting to do what they want with their bodies. Many of them have been sexually abused, start at a young age and are into drugs. Many use drugs to cope with the 'job'. Are there girls who do it as adults and who are doing it by choice and who have not been abused or on drugs, yes. But not the majority.

Just my opinion. I don't think we should be able to buy and sell human beings.

  • My issue with polygamy is that it doesn't allow for women to have multiple husbands and that they allow children to marry. I think its hard to procecute because you can't prove they commited bigamy. Their churches keep it super private and its hard to find the documentation. My UO is that I find that 90% of people who defend etiquette faux pas's do so because they commited one themselves.

But that's not really what prostitution is.  It's buying and selling of sexual favors. I totally understand why people wouldn't want it legalized and I don't honestly expect it to happen anymore than I expect weed to suddenly be okie dokie with the government.  But prostitution is not the same as slavery.

    *applause*

I also think it's obnoxious to assume all prostitutes are some sad down trodden women forced into a life style because of circumstance (or strippers for that matter) and to pity them. That's simply not the case all the time. Some of these women are very much in control and empowered. They're comfortable using their bodies for income and shouldn't be judged for it. It's just like the teaching your kids to swim analogy Donna Martin used when trying to get the school board to allow condoms to be available at school. It's going to happen anyway, so why not make it safe?

"If you build a pool, and you know your kids are going to swim, you can build all the fences you want. But if you know they’re going to jump in the pool, don’t you think you should teach your kids how to swim?" - Oh how I love you Donna Martin.

People can't be 100% assured the guy/chick they are sleeping with is disease free whether they're being paid or not.  I also don't think it's anyone's business why someone chooses the profession they do.  I have a friend in social work that had a drug problem for a short time to cope with what she did.  Hell, sometimes I need to go home and pound a beer after a trying day at my office job.  No one is talking about buying/selling human beings.  We're talking about buying/selling a service.  What makes it so different than being a maid, landscaper, contractor, nanny, etc.?
