• I am also concerned about the death penalty in this case but I guess that is neither here nor there.
image
• I have mixed feelings about the death penalty, especially since it's legal where I live.

After the couple that I mentioned was murdered, and it helped me understand why people seek it out. In this case, two of the kindest people I had ever met were murdered because the grandson wanted to rob their house. It was so senseless and it was a brutal murder. That brings out a lot of anger when it comes to the loved ones, and I get why people would want it.

That said, I also don't know that an eye-for-an-eye is the best way to go. Considering I am a Christian, it's hard to say, "Sure, kill them too since they killed someone" and be okay with that, since that isn't what Christianity is about.

If a vote came out in Texas to abolish the DP, I don't think I'd vote, because I understand where families that are seeking the DP are coming from, and I can't entirely blame them.

This is a HUGE influence on my anti-death penalty stance. Along with the flawed system and the fact that it actually makes me physically ill to think of all the innocent people on death row or that have been on death row.

But sometimes prison isn't as bad as it's made out to be...it depends on the facility.

I had an uncle that was in and out of prison for years for DUIs and assault, and after he was released for the last time from prison, he talked about how much all the guys liked to watch Desperate Housewives because the girls were so hot.

I don't get why they have tvs in prison. I really don't.

I say all of that to say that this furthers my understanding for families that seek out the DP.
• I loved reading Columbine - I want to read it again. It happened when I was in 8th grade so I was kind of shielded from the details, so I was super enlightened. I was having conversations with people about it for week after I read it. Good book.

Irritation: Two kids who don't live in my community threw balloons of PEE at a townhouse across the street and then ran back to their truck and sped - almost losing control of their car out of the parking lot to get away from the kids in the house they just pee ballooned. The kids int he house threw baseballs at that car, hitting one car on our side of the parking lot and shattering the window of the pee people's car. There's glass all over our parking lot, the car on our side didn't have any damage, thankfully, but management said "It's just kids being kids".

Eff that. Kids need to be DISCIPLINED for that shiiiit. If it had been my car that had been hit or if I get a flat tire from the glass or if my house had been hit by a stray pee balloon I would have been PISSED. "kids being kids" is a bullshit excuse and I think it's one of the reasons people don't give a damn anymore about others.

I'm having a PB&J and banana sandwich and BBQ pop chips. I feel like I'm in elementary school with this meal.

Irrational (maybe rational) Irritation: A friend of mine had a baby in June, and she's been traveling quite a bit with the baby to see family/friends across the country and to go to music festivals. I don't have a child, so I'm not sure if this is an unpop op, but I think it's a little weird to be traveling to like 7 states with your one month old "just because". And in my mind a concert probably isn't the best thing for tiny baby ears. But I'm irritated that my friend keeps boasting about how her daughter has so many experiences now and she's been to all these great places and seen such great things. The baby isn't going to remember a single thing from these trips. It just annoys me.

Oh I hate that prisons have TVs for the inmates. At least to be watched on a regular basis. I'm okay with maybe being able to watch the news once a week or something, but even tehre, newspapers do that job too. To me, prison needs to be like in Shawshank, minus the abusive parts. Bare minimum for sleeping quarters, enough food to live, and hard work.

I can't say for sure but I'd be really surprised if inmates eligible for the DP get TV time.

I still agree with this. We've had conversations about this before and I think it was Erin who's H is a corrections officer who said she's happy they have TVs because it keeps the prisoners from being as violent...Erin, if I'm wrong correct me!

That annoys me, too, and I don't even know these people. Not that having a baby means you never get to do anything fun or adventurous again by any means. But one month old is VERY young and the loud noise can't be good for baby's ears. I call bullshiiiit on the 'so many experiences' line, too. Sounds more like New Momma just doesn't want to miss out and grow the eff up and be a mom. Pisses me off she wants to justify it by claiming she is broadening the horizons of a one-month old. Ummm, she's ONE MONTH OLD — her horizons aren't supposed to be broad! Gah.

image
• LDY - Balloons of PEE?! I'd be livid.

Leisel - I agree, taking a one month old all over and exposing them to allergens and germs that they aren't used to is needless to me. If it was for a job or something, fine, but just to do it? No thanks.

Musu - I would think that if they're actually ON death row that they wouldn't, but even max-security prisons have stuff like that.

I also remember being annoyed that when this uncle got out of prison, he was FAT, like fatter than he was when he went in...which to me shows that they didn't really have to do anything. He was in a lower-security prison, but still. If they don't make the low-security prisoners do anything beyond watching tv and laying around, then I doubt they're going to trust the high-risk prisoners to do much else, kwim?
• I hate the "kids being kids" excuse in general but seriously, that doesn't even pertain to that behavior. Downright disgusting. They need to be taught that is not appropriate.

TV's in prisions I find to be ridiculous. If anything, they should be used as a reward for good behavior or a very seldom treat.
• My thoughts exactly, Wally. She's not with the dad because he decided he wasn't ready to be a parent, but now it's looking like she wishes she could opt out, too. I wish she'd just settle down for a bit.
• I would like to see an example of a max security prison with TV. I am not saying it doesn't exist, I just haven't heard of it. I don't necessarily agree with TV but I have no problem with board games or other things of that nature.
image
• I don't mind TVs in prison if it keeps people from getting violent. But I think it's silly if prisoners aren't expected to DO anything besides watch TV. Maybe in some places they are, but the prisons I've learned about don't require much of anything from the prisoners.
• I think prisoners should have to WORK all day. Sun up to sun down. They should be in charge of everything going on in the prison (non-administration wise)...laundry, food prep, housekeeping, etc. I dont think they should HAVE downtime except for maybe one day or two out of the week - but that doesn't mean they get TV. It should mean they get to lay in their cells and read or something. They did something WRONG - they should have to do more than get free food and watch TV and work out and hang out and play basketball.

• WFL: I had BBQ chicken with salad and melon slices (from our cafeteria). It was ok.

Irritation: I found out that the guy who killed my cousin back in 2009 probably won't even start his murder trial for quite some time. By the time he was charged for murder, he was already fulfilling a sentence in CA for drug posession with intent to distribute, so he's waiting to be transferred to AZ, where the murder took place. It's going to be even harder because he dumped her body in the desert in the summertime, so they don't have much evidence beyond some bloody clothes found in their hotel room. I just want to grab the guy by the neck, look into his eyes and be like "How DARE you mess with my family". I'm so angry and sad and I miss her so much.

UO: I think it's ridiculous for people to expect that stricter gun laws will lead to less crime.

I read an article a while back about a stray cat (I think?) wandering into a prison somehow and the prisoners started taking care of her and playing with her and whatnot. Having an animal around really helped a lot of them, apparently. It was a really sweet story.

I don't think that's all that unpopular. People who want to commit crimes will commit crimes regardless of how tight the gun laws are.

I'm sorry your family has to continue to deal with that situation.
