The suicide thing is straight bullshit. Suicide by handgun has a success rate of more than 97%. Slitting of one's wrists, taking pills and carbon monoxide poisoning have success rates in the 60s - 80s. Someone making a first time suicide attempt is more likely to survive it if a gun is not the tool used.

From the Journal of Trauma (1998) "It was found that for every time a household gun was used for self-defense, there were 4 unintentional shootings, 7 criminal assaults or homicides, and 11 attempted or completed suicides."

Musical, the jail here is pre and post conviction depending on the sentence. The jail my H works at also houses some federal inmates. That might be confusing, but let's say Joe grabs his shotgun and robs the local bank. He goes to stay with my H until sentencing. If he gets over 365 days for his sentence, he goes to prison. If it's less, he stays with my H until he has served his time.

Federal inmates go to the jail here for variety of reasons. Example A: Child molester A has served 6 of 10 years and with good time is expected to be out in X amount of time. He shows no violence. He may serve out the rest of his sentence in the jail here. Example B: Gang member inmate serves sentence in the jail here because he fears for his life and somehow has convinced the court he belongs here. I don't really know exact details, and I made up these examples so I might be wrong.

But yeah, H has both federal, as well as pre and post conviction inmates. On gun stuff: H has his CC permit and I'm glad. We have a gun safe, where the guns stay 99% of the time.

There is a lot of stupid garbage on facebook right now.

In fact here is one I found funny -

    <a href="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/1/4/11724bd1-6255-4c01-a453-d292a6d6b276.large.jpg" title="Click to view a larger photo" class="PhotoLink"> <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/1/4/11724bd1-6255-4c01-a453-d292a6d6b276.medium.jpg" alt="" /></a>

See that?  <strong>Guns</strong> murdered?  How interesting.  I mean, I can get behind that people <em>used</em> guns to murder, but I've never seen a gun murder.  Kwim?

The gun debate makes me kinda squicky.  I mean, I can respect that not everyone is going to love guns.  I don't even like guns.  I don't have guns, never shot a gun, my husband doesn't have guns and doesn't hunt, we just aren't all up in the gun-ness.  But I respect guns.  I respect people who respect guns.  And I think no matter what we do to tighten the regulations on guns, criminals are always going to get guns.  Amen, period, the end.  Criminals don't give a rip.  That's what scares me, not people with concealed carry permits.

How many people do you think would have been killed and injured if Holmes had had three or four handguns and 1 rifle?

Assault rifles have one and only one purpose. Killing people. They're not for protection, they're not concealable and they're not for hunting. Why are they legal? Why would anyone who doesn't want to kill people want them to be?

We actually have a shitpile of guns. H was a big hunter. But, he can't shoot anymore since the crash. (Not strong enough to handle the recoil.) They are all locked up safely. I have never shot any of them, but have shot other guns in my lifetime. Am actually (or was, anyway) a really good shot.

On a happy note for H, he is taking a bow hunting course Saturday because he and his doc think he would physically be able to handle that. I hope so. It's so great when we find a way to modify something he used to love so he can still do it.

Lizzie, feel free to look into the Journal of Trauma. They're quite well respected and have no affiliation with Brady.

And you think those stats have significantly changed since 1998? That makes very little sense to me.

Something being fun is not a good basis for determining the legality of something.  Marijuana is fun too but that is illegal and you can't kill anyone with weed.  So no, that is not a valid argument for why a weapon should be legal or not.
