Morning!

I'm getting ready for work, and then, this afternoon, I'm going to enjoy our beautiful day. What are you all up to today?

Re: Morning!

  • Morning crnflk, we are still in the islands, they are coming in and laying new carpet and tile tomorrow, so we are trying to put the furniture from those rooms in the other rooms.  Fun times.  It is a beautiful day outside.
  • Morning....I already went grocery shopping, now I am finishing the cd I am making for my students, so I can complete the track list, burn them, go to staples and get the cases printed, and then come home and assemble them.

This afternoon I am going to an art exhibit.  I have a former student who is now graduating from college and she wanted me to come up and see her work.
  • My biggest project today is my BFF's birthday treat.  She is my fellow over the top chocoholic and every year I make something for her birthday.  I'm a fairly accomplished baker so I try to find something special and decadent for her.  I'm going to include home made ice cream for her this year too.

Other than that, I have to catch up on some house work I let slide this week.
  • kmmssg, mmmmmm, I love chocolate too!  My birthday is in August.  Want to come to the islands?
  • Ski, I'm going to St. John on Friday. Are you there?   Is the weather okay?  Last year around this time H and I went on our honeymoon and it literally poured round-the-clock.  Didn't get to go to the beach at all!!

  • Wrong islands, Nola, we are in the 1000 islands in Alexandria Bay, NY.  Hoping you will have beautiful weather.  I am friends with some individuals who live on St John and they said yesterday the weather has been divine.  They even teased me with pictures to prove it.

Hope you enjoy your trip, our closing on the house has been pushed back with no new date set yet.  Ugh!  They so move on island time.

  • Good morning! We are going to a movie today and to get some food. That is about as far as we have gotten with our plans.

Ski - Are you having a better day so far?

  • kmm, what a great personal and thoughtful birthday gift.  I would love doing something like that with a friend instead of just buying a gift.

Morning all :)  I just rolled out of bed.  I think I'm finally caught up on sleep from this week.  A thunderstorm woke us up last night, and the cat slept under the bed for the rest of the night, silly goon.  Now I'm making my grocery list and getting a little work done, then I have my volunteer job from 1-4, and then we're shopping for patio furniture.  Then I'll be doing more work.  Woo hoo.

Everything the light touches is my kingdom.
  • Morning all. FI and I are having a slow day today. I might go outside and deal with my garden a little, but other than that nothing's on the books. Maybe a movie tonight? Who knows.
  • Kmm, I love that idea.

I am sore today--we went to a huge festival concert yesterday on the boardwalk/beach and we walked all over the place. Still, we got to see Foo Fighters again and it was an amazing show, so it was totally worth it.  The last song of the night was our wedding song, and we just danced on the beach, with like 50,000 other people and Dave Grohl.

Now, it's back to real life and cleaning. Blegh. It's too nice out for real responsibility.
  • Nates, that sounds awesome. I wish I were on a beach right about now...
  • Good morning! This afternoon we have our cupcake tasting with FIs cousin. I'm really looking forward to it! Then in the evening we're going to the Exploratorium with the family I babysit for to see the eclipse. It's looking like a good day!
  • Huh. I made a morning thread a little after 2pm/8am. I see it disappeared.

Anywho, we went out to a castle nearby and walked around with Lucy. It's really gorgeous outside so we had a ton of fun.

Last time we saw them in Madison Square Garden and it was my first show, so N got us tickets right on the floor. We were SO close, but I felt so claustrophobic at the same time. This was just relaxed, so even though we were farther away, it was still great.

I want to go back to the beach today. I hate real life :P

Snip, that sounds cool. I'm trying to figure out what we can go do with the dog today so we can get outside for at least a little bit.
  • Oh, and the earthquake in Italy? That's where I used to live: http://edition.cnn.com/2012/05/20/world/europe/italy-earthquake/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

So shocking. Our friends are all okay, thankfully. It was just really intense to see that kind of magnitude in that area.
  • I was living in Florence when the L'Aquila earthquake happened. Coming from California, it was a bit shocking how unprepared the Italians are for earthquakes, seeing as they're not that uncommon. I hope they start working on some seismic reinforcement. It could save so many lives.

So true. They have a weird mentality of "It won't happen here/then/later" or they're Catholic about it.
  • Are earthquakes common in Italy? If an earthquake happened here I'd have no idea what to do.
  • Fairly common. I was there during the L'Aquila quake as well, and we had one in Modena around the same time of about 3 something. They hae minor tremors all the time.  It's a fault-ridden country.
  • I don't think they're as common as in California, but they do have quite a bit of seismic activity. By our standards here, the earthquakes in Italy haven't been "big" these last years, but because they have so many really old buildings with no seismic reinforcement, people get crushed and killed. Like Snippy said though, it's very much the Italian mentality of "well, that was bad, it won't happen again" so they never do anything about it.
  • Morning ladies!!

When that earthquake in Virginia happened last year, we were able to feel just a tiny bit of it all the way up here. It was so weird, I was nannying and I felt the house moving slightly... I thought a plane was flying directly over the house or something. Of course, K was completely unphased, she just kept playing. People were all over facebook like, "Uh, earthquake in PA?"

No idea what I'd do if there was an actual full scale earthquake.

  • Angel, some of my friends here said they felt it too. I had no idea anything had happened.
  • We were in Indiana when the ZOMG EAST COAST EARTHQUAKE hit, so we missed out on all the drama. My mom said it was a little disquieting, but not too bad by where we live. As much as I make fun of it, I can't lie, I'd probably be scared.
  • Hello! I've never felt an earthquake before, and it is not an experience I want either.
  • Small ones are disquieting, but that's really all.

<div>So true. I know the ins and outs of surviving through a hurricane and preparing for long term power outages but you get 0 warning for an earthquake.</div>
  • Yeah, it was hilarious, people made SUCH a big deal out of it...They were making FB groups like, "I survived the earthquake of 2011" or some crap. It was silly. And I got a bunch of texts asking if I was okay. I guess since we rarely get any kind of horrible weather or disasters up here, besides blizzards, (knock on wood) people were excited.

  • Yeah I'm kinda glad that earthquakes don't happen here. The worst we get are tornadoes or floods and I can deal with that.
    image
  • Yeah - Tornadoes don't have much warning either, but I'd stll prefer that to an earthquake. It feels like you can't really hide from an earthquake - and in a tornado I feel nice and safe in my basement.
