They really are giving Jersey a bad name, which is odd because all the people I know from New Jersey know how to treat people properly...

I just wanted to step in and try to salvage the name of New Jersey. I live here, I was married here. I have been to many weddings here (And most of them, including my own, were formal affairs full open bar, 4-course sit down meal with dancing), and not once have I ever seen "black tie optional" on an invitation. I have seen "Black Tie" on an invitation once, because the venue the wedding was being held at had a strict dress code, and would not permit anybody that was under-dressed to enter.

Black tie "optional" is not real. Something is either a black tie event (In which case, putting "Black Tie" on the invitation is appropriate), or it isn't (In which case mentioning attire at all is not appropriate). If anybody asks what they should wear, just tell them that the guys will be in suits and the ladies will be in nice dresses. That's it. Anything more than that is rude, and most certainly implies that you think your guests are too ignorant to figure out how to dress themselves.

And if somebody does show up poorly dressed, they look bad. Not you. So not even remotely your problem. Get over it.

  • Man that cindy chick just doesn't get it. She keeps talking about "customs" and "traditions" of a NJ wedding. The topic is the etiquette of "black tie optional", not customs & traditions. Head meet desk.

I'm scurred of the NJ board. I didn't hang out there when I was even planning my own wedding, lol.

I swear, there really are nice, polite and smart people from NJ. Between MTV and the NJ board I'm sure nobody here actually believes that anymore, but I swear it's true

  • Oh, I have mad love for Mel. I know I don't post here often, but whenever I lurk and find Mel, she cracks me up while giving awesome advice. I would totally be down for having a g2g with her and forming the NJ Etiquette Brain Trust or something, lol

  • They couldn't handle someone not validating their ideas on the NJ board, so it got shut down. For realz? Grow some ballz ladies.

  • Ha ha ha, wow. So mature...note to self, if you don't agree with New Jersey, they will shut it down. Klassy.

  • I wish people would realize that when they come here and their ideas aren't validated by both regs and those of us with low post counts, it's not E being a big bunch of meanie-heads, but that the idea is probably not a good one in the first place.

But I guess that would be me wishing people used common sense, and I think we all know how uncommon it truly is.

So, will any of your NJ board members be getting a reminder of what is and is not appropriate in terms of calling members of other boards "bitches", "psychos", and the like? When you get back from your travels, of course...

Just curious. Because it seems the tempers flared on the NJ side well before they did anywhere else.

I was referring to tempers on all sides. And I will of course send warnings as needed. As I'm sure your mods will if needed.

OP -- I really don't need to repeat what's already been said. The board has given you advice, and you have decided not to take it. Let's all stop arguing now.
