Thanks for the input Jess. Anyone else have any thoughts on the baby gift? FWIW, we are gifting them the beginnings of a baby's first library. (And a nephew or aunt bib, which ever one I find that is more adorable, just because). I just need to figure out how much to spend on the "library".
    Posted by mrs.jesse
When my first "nephew" was born (he was actually my ex's nephew, but we'd been together for awhile and I was really involved in the baby's life, so he was like mine as well), I got a really cool picture frame thing, which a friend of mine saw at a craft fair. It was in the shape of blue overalls and had space for 12 months of pictures, for his first year. I didn't want to get something generic and expected, although to be fair, I didn't even know there was a registry because I had never been to a shower before, heh. I would really say spend as much as you can afford... maybe get a bigger ticket item along with something more special.

ETA - Reading fail on my part, somehow I missed the library part. I would say maybe $100 or so. I would see if you could get copies of books that were popular when you guys were kids too, I always think it's cool when babies have books that their parents had as babies, ie: Goodnight Moon.

Edie, my childhood friend had it in her house and that was, oh lord, 1985 ish? So yeah, old. :)

I love the library idea. I would probably spend ~100. I don't know. What does a good carseat cost? I might spend a comparable amount.

Holly there are places throughout the house where you plug in the hose/nozzle/vaccuum head. All the 'ick' goes thru a pipe system and down into a canister in the mechanical room. There are also those toe-kick dustpan thingies in both kitchens. So you have a big hose/head you take from room to room.

Maybe I'm being unfair to it and just need to give it a chance.

I thought central vac was for rich people. So uh, I guess I don't know anything! I've only seen it in my parents friend's 12,000 square foot house.
  • Options
I've never heard of a central vacuum, but it kind of sounds like a pain in the butt. It's probably just that I'm used to a regular push vacuum.

LOL, Erin. Our house isn't quite that big. Holy crap, that'd be a lot to clean.

I grew up with central vacs and I'm old.

I love the toe kick vents in the kitchen. We also had hoses on each of the floors, so no moving the hoses up and down stairs.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Those toe-kick dustpan things sound awesome though Wally. And did you say both kitchens?

    Edie, you crack me up.

I ordered my STDs today... the proofs were ready in like 20 minutes, so as soon as I approve them, they'll be on their way to be printed. I'm excited!

I love the library idea. The little girl I nanny for had something similar done for her, except intead of one person doing it, everyone who was invited to the baby shower brought a book for her. I thought that was such a cute idea.

The cannister has to be emptied like, annually. It's great for allergies. The allergist told my parents that they pretty much had to get one or else get me a bubble.

hey guys, just kind of in an out here while i work on my paper. I am legitimately chuckling over Arag's spin class exit earlier. I am sad I couldn't finish the conversation. But I got a bigger girl crush on Chrissy because of it. <3

Jesse, from a mom's POV, I would probably wait until closer to when the baby is born (or the baby shower) and try to get a big-ticket item that hasn't been bought for them yet (off their registry) for your nephew. I'd also get a few smaller, personalized presents as well, - a few books, the magic seahorse, etc. Everyone will want to buy the baby clothes or small cutsey things, but there are items that are needs not wants when it comes to a baby.

I think one of the most frustrating things (for me) was that I was "forced" to have a baby shower because everyone wanted me to have one, and then I felt I had to rush to get all of the things that I needed, because no one bought off the registry and I was left with a bunch of clothes and stuffed animals, but no crib, changing table, etc...

You can still do the "library," but start off small and then build over different holidays, birthdays, etc.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

Holly, yes, you empty it like once or twice a year. Probably twice for us because of the fur babies

Yes, we have two kitchens Girlie. A 'real' one upstairs and a smaller one downstairs. Gah. I have a kazillion relatives who like to eat.

In all seriousness, we built the house so if H ever needs live-in care, a caregiver could live in the lower level. Everything we need is on the main floor; currently lower level is for parties, etc.

I'm pretty sure I will let H empty the canister. I don't want to know what a year's worth of ick looks like either. Nast.

OK, I missed your last post about the big ticket items, but I still stand by my "buy off the registry" statement.

And, also, to add some of my favorite books to read to the kids:

    Haiku Baby
    How do Dinosaurs say Goodnight
    Go the Fuuck to sleep

ETA: the last one, obviously, is not to be read to the kids.

I have never heard of this central vac bidness. I have severe allergies so maybe this is something we need to look into when we buy a house. It sounds kind of awesome.

Half Price Books is an awesome place for gently-used kids books. If they don't have what I want, Amazon is usually the next best place in terms of price. We're not big garage-salers or flea market goers though, so there's that.

I second the suggestion for the cardboard books! Not only can they not be torn out, but it's soo much easier for them to turn the page by themselves when it's so sturdy and thick.

Tide, I think that's really good advice.

I'm nervous about people buying a bunch of little things and not the things I need for this baby.

Cardboard books are nice for when they're younger, but once they're 2-3, the cardboard books are too short, so you need books with pages.

I think the key is teaching children how to treat books.

My mom was REALLY good at this and I'm going to insist that she gives me her secrets. We NEVER ripped pages in books, and we loved our books more than many of our toys.
In Response to Re: Night Thread : Glad you got your STDs ordered. Which one did under up choosing? I love the idea of a book baby shower. I didn't throw hers though, in fact it was this past Saturday, and since we are on an extended vacation I couldn't attend. Thats how I know all the big stuff has been taken care of ,and I can focus on something fun.

I couldn't choose, so I ended up getting both of the ones I was considering... half my guest will get one, half will get the other.
In Response to Re: Night Thread : Not in my experience. My nephews (2 and 3) still love cardboard books - particularly if they can identify things from pictures. Or the flip tab books - they LOVE the flip tab books.

I guess it just depends on the kid :)

By the time my nephew was 3, he had lost interest in his cardboard books because they were too short.
In Response to Re: Night Thread : Thanks for a moms POV Tide. I appreciate it! That's definitely the way we went when they got married last September- total practicality, even thigh they purchased us a variety of personalized items for our wedding. They had a baby shower throw for them last Saturday, and they had purchased most of the really big things already. All the bedroom furniture ( crib, changing table, dresser, rocker), strollers, car seats, high chair, bouncy chair, pack and play, etc... Is all already sitting waiting for baby's arrival in..0-6 weeks. Along with a mountain of cutesy clothing. I've seen a number of our friends though exactly in your situation, where they were in the 4 week crunch after their shower.
