Posted by mica178
I personally think that's BS reasoning. So the 28 years I've been using the name means butkis? It's just on loan from my dad, who happened to use it for 26 years before I was born? But it's HIS name, not borrowed from his own father, right? Because he's male, I guess. Besides, how do you know I have "his" name? (I do, actually, but my parents were very particular about crafting together my first, middle and last name. It just so happens my last name is from my dad's family. I have no problem with my dad's family.) But that's another thing - why can't more kids have last names from their mother's families? This is actually something my husband and I have discussed a lot. He wants his kids to have his last name. I can't blame him, he likes his name and is close to the family his name represents. But that doesn't mean I don't want them to have my name. (Actually, I want to combine our names, but I'll probably fold and let him have his way.)

See, I don't view my maiden name as my father's name. It is my family's name. It is my name. If people have this belief that their maiden name = their father owning them, I think that's dumb. What the heck else are people supposed to be called growing up. Are parents supposed to create a new last name for their kids so as to not show ownership over them?
In Response to Re: Unpopular Opinions? : I agree with you, really. I don't feel that way, either. I just don't have enought confidence in humanity to trust that everyone feels the way we do. I guess I'm always afraid of confrontation when I make a choice that puts me in the minority. I'm not sure why. Here's the study presented by the American Sociological Association showing that 50% of Americans think a woman should be legally required to change her name. Which clearly says they do NOT think it should be a choice: http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2009/08/12/2009-08-12_70_percent_of_americans_.html

Just because a lot of people are stupid doesn't mean I should be pressured to make a choice to prove them wrong. I'm all for women having equal rights. I don't think it's my obligation to exercise every choice against the historically popular option in order to publicize those choices. That's really just instituting a new set of limitations on me. They're different from the old ones, but limits nonetheless. How exactly is that "progress"? In reality, it's pretty feminazi to me. And I thought that's what you wanted to avoid.

Ditto. I don't judge anyone for either choice. I do wonder how annoying it has to be though when everyone constantly calls you by your H's last name, and you have to correct them. I would think that would lead to more questions than changing your name. That, and the explanation to your kids of why their parents have 2 different names.

Haha I suggested that to H and he gave me the death stare. I have a friend that I could really see doing that though if she marries her current BF. She is a sales rep for Medtronic and makes a great living and has a great clientele, and her BF is a manager at a local store, so we always joke with him and call him Mr. Herlastname. He's not such a fan!

That's a great point. Except that it's not a requirement. It's just a reasoning some women use, or think about. What I'm saying is that if those things ARE important to you, it's good to think about. If they're aren't, it's not a problem. Are they to me? A little. Hence my UO.

Edit: in the past there actually were legal limitations. When Lucy Stone went up to the Massachusetts courts in 1885 (I think) and said there was no law requiring she had to take her husband's last name they... passed a law.

Also, I kept my last name, but it wasn't entirely for this issue, it's just something I've been thinking about lately. It was definitely for personal reasons. (Although the whole, "why should *I* change if he doesn't have to?" thing came into play.)

  • KatyRose made no effing sense whatsoever in this thread. I read the whole damn thing and it all just went around in circles. Jeebus.

I hate Favre and therefore the Vikings, I despise the Steelers in their entirety and am learning to root for the Patriots because my H's family is all from Boston.

I hate Chili's/Applebee's/Olive Garden/most chain restaurants. I find their food tastes like rubber.

I am taking my H's last name and am happy that I have the CHOICE to do so. He does not own me, I am joining his family and it is symbolic of that. Sure, he could take my last name but we live in a patriarchical society so this way is just easier. Plus, try tracing your family history when everyone changes their last names (or not) willy-nilly. It is tradition, in my mind.

My new UO: I hate Uggs. I don't care how warm they keep your feet, I hate them.
In Response to Re: Unpopular Opinions? : Exactly. I don't really consider my last name who I am. I mean, yes, it's convenient to have a last name for the sake of mail and government ID and such, but who I am as a person hasn't really changed since I changed my name. But if I have kids some day, having th same last name as them will make it easier for me to travel with them. And, while I've had 32 years of identifying as mica MaidenName, in 14 years, I'll have spent the same number of adult years as mica NewLastName. I don't think I gave up my identity with the name change at all. But that article questioning women's lib because so many women change their name when they marry? That's a ridiculous article. We have women's lib because more women graduate from college than men now. We have women's lib because there are both liberal and conservative women in politics. There's a long way to go for women's lib, but I don't think that progress has been hampered by the greater numbers of women choosing to take their husband's name.
    Posted by mica178
See, I don't get that. I don't think people who have never married their kids' father and might have different last names or people who have divorced and remarried have trouble proving their kids are their own. And just because my last name is Jones doesn't mean that every kid with the last name Jones is my kid or related to me at all. But I digress.

I think it will be interesting to see how the women's lib thing plays out in 20-30 years. 20 years ago, MORE women kept their last names. But like I said earlier, today it's like everyone is just over that.
