I see it as a cautionary tale as well, but I'm also a 33 year old woman who has been through an abusive relationship. If I were a 15 year old girl with a hard on for all things Eminem (or Rhiana), I would probably have a different perspective on it. Does that make sense?
FWIW, I was in a 6 year relationship that was emotionally volatile, not physically. I can still relate to the mindset from when I was there. Someone all it takes is someone to identify with in order to stop the mindfuuck.
    Posted by SarahPLiz
I absolutely can relate to this. I was in the same situation with my ex---clearly unhealthy, but it took me four and a half years to get out of that twisted game. When you can see what you're going through mirrored in someone else's situation, it is a wake-up.

That being said, I can name at least 25 teenage girls that would think this situation is "glamourous" because of the portrayal in the video. This is why education about ALL kinds of abuse is so important.
I love the melody, the passion (of the vocalists), the strength of emotion portrayed by Megan Fox and ___(?), and the play between Eminem and Rhianna's vocal styles. But, I'm going to bed tonight hoping that young ladies who fall in love with this song on the radio and finally see the video get shocked into understanding what a doomed and unhealthy relationship looks and feels like. Passion is wonderful, but that kind of love/hate isn't passion... it's sickness. I remember adoring a song in HS because it just 'got' what my relationship was with this guy. Later, I realized that the song was about a stalker. Nice. Blue- I'm so glad you got out.

    Thanks. Me too.

It took 4 years, a few black eyes, a few chunks of hair ripped out, a few broken ribs, and a $2000 dorm damage charge to wake me up, but at least i woke up.

Looking back, its amazing what you will do for love sometimes. But I look at things as learning experiences. It happened, it ended, I grew up and took with me the knowledge that I would never put up with that shiit again. I dont let it bother me anymore.

  • It sounds cheesy and corny as hell, but I can't help thinking that maybe some kind of quick statistic after the video, like about how many women are killed by their husbands/boyfriends/domestic partners each year, or the annual cost of domestic abuse, or something to really hit home with the teens (who Em knows damn well are the main listeners of his music) that he IS NOT condoning it, and it is not something to take pride in being involved with.

    I think that's a really good idea.
FWIW I think (maaaybe) that Eminen's reference to tying her to the bed and setting the house on fire might have some reference to the movie "The Burning Bed" which is actually a non-fiction movie about domestic violence. (wikipedia reference is here = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Burning_Bed)

I probably shouldn't give him that much credit though....

Exactly. I can't imagine being smart enough to do what he does with his lyrics. He's a genius in the same way that I think Mitch Hedberg was a truly brilliant comedian. I just think it takes a really talented brain to come up with that stuff.

I think it speaks to the prevalence, and to some extent the lack of education. My mom encouraged me to stay with the guy because he was so "charming" and to this day he's her favorite ex of mine. She likes him way more than FI. Sometimes people on the outside don't get how ugly it is behind closed doors.

I think that is totally fine. I'm taking my ex's daughter school shopping this week. He's getting better at not being an asshole, and he's actually a pretty good dad, but he's still emotionally fucked most of the time and he has very few marketable skills. He was unemployed for over a year so they were struggling more than usual. While I'm glad he's getting his comeuppances, I can't stand to see her suffer for his mistakes.
