There's a lot that's good about the US, and I don't think I'd ever renounce my citizenship (though dual would be fine), but I can admit there are things that other countries do better than we do. And things we do better than other countries. It's just different. And it's a matter of what you think is important.

This is EXACTLY the sentiment that inspired my unpopular opinion in the first place.

The US is a democratic republic. If we don't like it here, then we can use the system to affect change. Or not. That's how democratic republics work. But the moment you (general you) express dissatisfaction with some aspect of the glorious US of A, some star-spangled fool comes along and says "If you don't like it here, then you should leave" -- missing the point entirely.

It often surprises me when people aren't proud to be from wherever they are from. For me, my country would have to be pretty terrible all the way around to not be proud to be from there, but maybe I just don't get it.
    Posted by mrs.jesse
I guess I just don't get being proud of where you're from JUST because it's where you're from. If my country does something good, then I'm proud. If it does something not so good, then I'm ashamed. It seems there's been more cause for shame than pride lately, but I'm hopeful that will change with the Bushes safely out of office.

  • Hmm. I don't like overly sweet things (I can only have a bite or two of pecan pie), but I might be willing to try this chess pie.

Nationalism is a difficult subject. I don't think I'm "better" than anyone just because I happened to be born within certain geographical borders, but I feel a kindred spirit with other people who were born in said borders. Perhaps this is what indoctrination is? Tricky.

I think there is a lot more to be proud of the US for than just who is in office. In fact my pride for being an American has very little to do with who the president is. And really, will we ever reach an era where people stop blaming "the Bushes"? It's really losing its flair.
In Response to Re: unpopular opinions? : " Chess pie is a particularly sugary dessert characteristic of Southern U.S. cuisine . According to James Beard's American Cookery (1972) chess pie was brought from England originally, and was found in New England as well as Virginia. Recipes vary, but are generally similar in that they call for the preparation of a single crust and a filling composed of eggs , butter , granulated sugar , brown sugar and vanilla . What sets chess pie apart from many other custard pies is the addition of corn meal. Some recipes also call for corn syrup , which tends to create a more gelatinous consistency. The pie is then baked. The result is very sweet and is often consumed with coffee to offset this."

  • My dad wasn't born here so he is always comparing U.S. to Europe. There are things he definitely doesn't like about the "American mentality" but he still loves American for everything that he has been able to accomplish here. He says he hates when he hears someone hates America or how they are not proud to be American (sometimes immigrants like him, sometimes Americans). He always responds with, "Well, nobody is holding a gun to your head so leave."

Hopefully my second-to-last post clarified my position then. But the truth is, I don't feel any sort of overwhelming pride JUST because some fortunate accident of birth made me an American citizen. And I resent the hell out of people who tell me that if I don't bleed red, white and blue, I don't "deserve" to be here.

I'll admit, I could be overly sensitive to this because I live in rural Arizona and am a bleeding heart liberal. If you sympathize with the Mexican immigrant population* -- which I do -- then you're pretty much written off as unpatriotic and un-American and told to GTFO.

    * Note that legal status doesn't matter. Racial profiling is very much a reality here (and elsewhere, I'm sure), no matter how hard our governor and sheriff pretend otherwise.
