I Judge

Re: I Judge

  • I never knew the sock/shoe baby thing was so complicated! I frankly think baby shoes are adorable but I totally agree they aren't practical. One of my nephews rocks the socks that look like shoes. He's cool. He dressed himself, no doubt.
I'm on team stack/jess with choosing the method for keeping your kids quiet that works best for your kids. And, the socks & shoes on infants thing? I think it looks ridiculous to put shoes on babies. And most of the time, they kick socks off. So why waste money on socks they're going to loose and shoes they can't walk in anyway? Personally, it looks like you're more concerned with appearances than what is practical, reasonable, and necessary for a baby.
    Posted by squirrly
So it's practical and reasonable to let babies get sunburned feet, or feet bitten up by bugs or all the other stuff that can happen to unprotected skin that can very well be nipped in the bud?
  • Just asking but, if the kid is just going from house to car to grocery store do they really need socks? Clearly they won't get sunburned from such a short transition and they most likely won't get biten. Like I said, though, I'm new to the baby sock/shoe situation.

Nope. But getting sunburt and eaten by bugs isnt likely to happen in the grocery. And that's outside the house. Further, the socks don't serve much purpose in preventing either once the baby has KICKED THEM OFF. I've yet to meet a baby that doesn't do it. They seem to hate socks with a passion.

And - if a parent is using socks in lieu of sunscreen, what about the band above the sock below where their pants ride up? What about hands and faces? Are they just immune? Or, because you've seen one parent forget to sunscreen feet, you assume all parents who don't put socks on their kids are trashy? I think socks are a poor substitute for sunscreen, a sun share on the stroller, etc. Since they help less than 10% of the baby stay sunburn free.
I judge all of the parents in Disney World who pushed their children in strollers that were waaaay too old to be in strollers. For example, if the child has to curl up in the fetal position just to fit in the stroller they shouldn't be in there. Hence why they don't fit. Andy and I couldn't believe these people! I would have been embarrassed as a 12 year old to be pushed in a stroller!

Thirty seconds out of every 3 minutes with one of our friends' babies. Literally. Those socks have a 3 minute lifespan before she's going to kick or pull them off. They lose a sock every time they leave the house with them on her feet. Wasteful to me. And with them, I know it's because they think the socks look cute. They don't look cute on the floor.

So just because some children kick their socks off, you think all children do? Also, a lot of people neglect to sunblock (not sunSCREEN, sunBLOCK) the feet. It's just a forgetful area. Maybe all children do kick their socks off. I don't know. I don't have any children (who will be wearing socks once they are born). Let parents do what they want. I'm still going to judge. It's a matter of personal preference.

As I said earlier, all the babies I know do that. The one specific example I gave was the one who does it with the most rapid frequency. And once the socks are gone, then there's nothing. So, if you want baby feet protected, it would seem wise to advocate something the baby can't remove.

Every kid I've ever known has kicked their socks off, or pulled them off. I would never JUST put socks on a kid without shoes, too.

I ahve, however, heard that when children learn to walk, if they have a propensity to walk on their tip toes, making them wear shoes all the time will help them plant their entire foot on the ground.

    Yup.
If it's really sunny outside, the parents should put sunscreen on baby's toes, not depend on knit socks to provide all the sun protection.

  • But telling them that church is starting, that they need to stay quiet play with the toy, eat the snack and stay in their seat is teaching.

late on this, but i think the purpose of church is to pay attention ot the service, not to play or eat. so when church is starting, you dont tell them to be quiet and play and eat, you tell them to be quiet and pay attention.

my sister has 4 kids, adn each and every one of them has sat through mass every week since they were born. sure, tehy had to be taken out here and there, but every one of them knows why they are there and how to behave. she never brought toys or food to church, nor did my sister and i have toys or food at church growing up.

this is an example of why kids today are fat. if tehy are taught to eat as a means to behave or be quiet, tehy will have a lifelong association with food being used for comfort. just like if a kid is upset and you say "go have a cookie". all their life they will eat when tehy are upset or depressed. food should not be used as a control mechanism.

  • I agree with Jess. Plus, have you ever tried to make a toddler keep their socks on, particularly when it is hot out? I'm a nanny, it's not really possible. I would hope the parents aren't making the kids walk barefoot on hot cement or something, but other wise, kids don't have the foot groddies that adults do.

  • I judge my dad today. He and mom have been harping on us ever since we moved about keeping the house at 75 (we have a chinchilla) because it costs so much money (it doesn't). Then yesterday he dropped almost $300 buying bird seed for his yard. I don't care what you spend your money on, but please stop acting like I've never budgeted before.
  • Calypso, kids today are fat because their parents don't feed them well balanced, appropriate meals on a daily basis, subsitute food and television for outside activities, and are more than willing to buy them whatever newfangled videogame system or electronic device they want instead of telling them to go outside and play for free. Not because someone gives their kids a cookie in church.

Who smacked this thread with the stupid tree? My head hurts from reading that.

I can tell you that there's a lot of things that I swore "I would never do" with my kids before I had a child of my own. You know what? You do what you have to in any given situation to make things work. For example, I swore I'd never co-sleep. One particularly bad night, I couldn't get Taryn to fall back asleep in her bassinet, and I was so tired I thought I'd drop her, so I brought her to bed with me. We found out really quickly that she sleeps a heck of a lot better in the bed than in her bassinet. So, the choice was sleep 2 hours in the crib or 5 hours in the bed. I'll take sleep over principals, TYVM.

As far as the sock issues; like PP mentioned, children, particularly under 12 months, have problems regulating their body temperature. Heat escapes through the bottom of the feet and the top of the head, which is why you wear thick socks and hats in the winter. If I think Taryn is too hot, the first things that come off are the socks.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • I judge my FBIL for dating such an awful controlling bitch. She is awful and I don't want her laying around my house anymore. That being said, I also judge FBIL for being with such a sleazy person and not growing a pair and kicking her to the curb. The only reason he is with her is because he doesn't want to be alone. He can do so much better, and everyone knows it.
