Not really.  People's irresponsibility with getting a loan is part of why the US and worldwide economy is where it is.  Just because a bank says you qualify for a $400k loan, doesn't mean you have to take that money.  It's your personal responsibility to make an informed decision about your finances.  When that doesn't happen across the board, it becomes a public problem.

I actually agree as well. When I was making 32-35k a yearish (depending on my overtime), I never thought my tax burden was too high. I actually thought my tax burden was higher when I was making $6 an hour working part time in, like, 2002. I'm glad when my tax dollars are used for helping the less fortunate and helping society and building better roads and all that good stuff.

[QUOTE]I think being irresponsible with money IS a public danger.  Young adults go into thousands and thousands of dollars of debt.  Then take the "easy" way out and declare bankruptcy.  Then the places that are owed money take a hit and don't get their money.  Which affects the economy.  Which effects everyone.  (not to say this is the case with all young adults with credit cards or even al young adults that get in over their heads.)

I think all athletes starting as pros should be required to have someone (money manager, CPA, tax attorney) manage their money.

Yes. Because those 16 year olds with credit cards grew up and continued to spend like idiots. That's exactly how we got into this mess. Irresponsibility that started with the fact that credit card companies market to teenagers.

[QUOTE]When I hear on the news "this politician supports tax cuts for the wealthy" like it's a bad thing, it makes me mad.  The wealthy should get tax breaks.  They pay a lot more taxes than the rest of us.  The top 10% of income earners pay 87% or more of all individual income tax.  While I agree that those without the wherewithal to pay should pay less, and thus wealthy people have to pay more, it's gotten out of hand.  I know a lot of couples in my line of work who are single-income families because it's cheaper to lose an income than to pay the taxes on it. I also think the estate tax is way too high.  Family businesses dissolve when the parents die because the children don't have enough liquid assets to pay the tax on inheriting ownership of the business.  How's that for helping small businesses?

    I agree.

I'm also pretty bitter about the credit card thing.  Because I wasn't one of the 16 year olds, or 18 year olds, or 21 year olds with a credit card, I'm having a hell of a time building credit now.  The credit system is punishing me for waiting until I had stead income/a way to pay for things to apply for credit.  Damnit, I shouldn't have lived within my means for all those years.

  • I think there is much more irresponsible spending in our generation and the generation after ours than there will be in the upcoming adult generation. People should better prepare their kids to manage money (and driving) rather than punishing them for something they haven't even had the chance to do yet. Manda is already reading some money management articles and things I've forwarded her as we prepare for her to be on her own. I hope she won't fall flat on her face and fail miserably, but if she does she'll learn from it and correct her behavior.

Preparing her for real life is part of my obligation as a parent, but I'm not taking her savings to control it because she may screw it up. I learned at 16. I just can't see how restricting the inexperienced will help them learn at all. It's like starting a class without a textbook. How exactly can you learn real life if you aren't given a real life?
  • I mean this in the least patronizing way possible, but you'd mind if you were in the top tax bracket.

And I guess I shouldn't feel bad about saying that, because it's equally patronizing to imply that wealthy people don't want to pay taxes or that they are oblivious to the benefits they enjoy because of the collection and distribution of tax dollars.  I'm pretty sure most wealthy people love highways and public libraries just as much as the rest of us.  They're just tired of shouldering the burden every.single.time taxes get raised.

    I think so too.

I don't see the problem with 16-year-olds driving or 18-year-olds having credit cards, as long as they get the proper education about driving, debt/credit cards, and so on. I drove at 16 and had multiple credit cards in my name by the time I graduated from college. My parents (and I!) considered it an important part of growing up and learning how to do things for yourself. I'd hate to be 18 or 21 or whatever and still dependent on my parents to drive me around or take care of my bank stuff.

<div>I agree with this. Especially because the people who make responsible choices NEED credit cards to establish and build up their good credit, so they are able to buy a house, get a loan for school etc.  I think cutting the limit for credit cards at 25 is not a practical solution.</div>

  • Sorry but I don't think same-sex partners should adopt. I am all for them expressing their love, getting married even, being able to get insurance for their partners, etc but raising a child that has 2 dads or 2 moms is just bizarre....kids will grow up thinking that's normal.
