I have an unpopular opinion: I don't like my company's new building. Everyone's going into spasms of how new and modern and pretty and blablabla it is, which is all true, but we are missing things like curtains in my office (and today it's raining, but on other days the sun shines off the glass building next to my window and blinds me from 3-5pm), a water cooler (and the tap water tastes gross) and a working thermostat in my office/someone to come fix the broken one, meaning it's a brisk 64 degrees.
Just because someone serves in political office doesn't mean they can make every change they see fit. I can't get elected to the county board of supervisors and get cracking on health care reform.
There are probably a lot of things Obama would love to change, but never will, because our government is based on checks and balances and mutual cooperation.

I always though I wouldn't want to spank my kids. I didn't think it really did anything for me growing up, and I thought it was dumb.
And then I became a preschool teacher. And now I think at an early age, some kids NEED spankings. I have never seen so many spoiled rotten children who walk all over their parents/grandparents because at home they got NO discipline. It's ridiculous.
If your child bites you every time you come to pick him up, I bet he wouldn't do it if you would have swatted his bottom the first time he did it.
Plus there's research out that says spanking can actually be beneficial between the ages of two and I think seven. It helps keep children safe by associating certain potentially-harmful behaviors (like playing with the knobs on the stove) with the pain of a spanking, and they learn not to engage in that behavior.
I think the effectiveness of spanking depends on the child. I got spanked because sitting in my room by myself wasn't punishment. I'd just read or fall asleep on the bed. My sister, however, thought the world was ENDING if she had to go sit in her room and not play with her toys. Spankings did her no good. So I can't say whether or not I'll spank my kids because it may or may not be an effective punishment for each particular child.

There are scientific studies that show specifically that spanking preschoolers is detrimental to their brain development. You don't teach them to learn and instead teach fear. I'm not saying discipline is wrong at all; however, there are real ways to handle behavioral problems without hitting.
There are quite a few recent studies that indicate a few negative effects spanking has on a child's development. Also, if parents are trying to teach that violence is wrong, along with hitting, biting, etc. why would you use a teaching method that is violent?? Thats nonsensical.
I wasn't hit as a child and neither were my siblings. If you wouldn't hit your dog to teach it a lesson why would you hit your kid?

That's not the question that should be asked when going to war. One of my poli sci profs in college was a military advisor for GHW Bush during the first gulf war. He spelled out for us years ago why we didn't take out Saddam. The man didn't give a twit about religions which actually stabilized the country. Without him in power there is a risk of Syria or Iran (depending on Sunni or Shiite control) controlling Iraq's oil fields. Now that we are leaving, this is still a huge risk.
