I got it from where you said that the word monkey is a slur and therefore there would be a racist connotation when used to describe Obama and wouldnt be if it was used to describe Bush.

Maybe I interpreted what you said incorrectly.

ETA: It was probably because I had asked if she had headed the email with some kind of racist implication and said that she may have just meant that he was as dumb as a monkey like they said about Bush.  So when I read your response, I took it as you meaning that because he is part black that it automatically = racist.  Instead of saying there "would" be a racist connotation, we should have said there "could" be one.

  • To be honest I took the monkey email to be implying Obama's lack of intelligence.  Since it is so reminiscent of everything said about Bush I really didn't think it was that big of a deal.

I do understand what Taylor is trying to say I just agree with Blue that she isn't phrasing things correctly.

I think a lot of people who cannot stand Obama for a variety of reasons hang onto the birther concept because they just cannot stand him and want him to fail. I'm not saying its right but that's how I view it.

I agree that his campaign organizing is ridiculous and to me just indicates how deep in the shiit he is.
  • If they had 2 monkey parents in the cartoon doesn't that mean it wasn't racist as his mom was white?  Then again I don't think the cartoon is saying he is stupid either, he is stupid and thats why there is no birth certificate?  That also doesn't make sense.  It is probably more likely they just forgot that he is also white, and it's a stupid cartoon.

  • Rosie - You're coming off really judgmental and kinda bitchy.  I get that you don't respect birthers or people who may question Obama's birth certificate but your attitude is making me respect you less.

Any- Obama ran as a moderate/liberal and he did win the popular vote.  His policies are nowhere near moderate so it is completely logical for people to be pissed at his behavior and policies despite how the vote worked out.

<div>Maybe it's just because I'm Canadian and Canada is a LOT more socialist, but nothing he's done (the only thing that really comes to mind is healthcare) has seemed all that extreme to me. Health care reform WAS one of the big things he was running on, wasn't it? I'm not sure what people expected in that department. Either way, I don't understand how that warrants harping on pointless things that can't be changed, like the birth certificate thing. If people are that pissed about it, they won't vote for him again and no matter how "outrageous" his campaign budget is, he's not going to get re-elected without votes. He dug his own grave there. Problem solved, or THAT problem solved at least. </div>

I didn't say the birther movement wasn't somewhat silly.....but I can understand their frustration and anger at Obama.  I believe if he wasn't an American citizen it would be known.  I do find the conspiracy angle interesting because well I love a good conspiracy.

I also don't see the point of saying if they are pissed about it they can just wait to vote.....that doesn't change how people feel or what Obama continues to do.  His actions will impact us all for years so I think it is quite logical to be angry now.

Obama has moved to involve the government in too many areas of our lives.  From buying out car companies to this flop of a healthcare bill.  I'm tired of the general American public needing the government to do everything for them and I'm even more tired of Obama's lies, two faced attitude and general arrogant demeanor.

It was actually Cynthia McKinneys main platform.  She was from the Green Party.

Obamas main platform was "Hope and Change" meaning change and reform in Washington.

  • The handful of birthers that I know, honestly believe that if it's proven he is not a natural citizen, then everything that has been put in place since he came in office is null and void. It blows my mind that people think you can just call a do over on 3 years, but that's the argument that I've heard. But, I will say that the people I know that are birthers, think universal health care is going to be the end of the world, or are people that were directly hurt because of this years CR shenanigans. I think the budget and CR crap is what is stirring all of this birther shiit up again.

I personally don't care for Obama, but my reasons go farther than "he's not Amurican" "he's the antichrist" or "he's a muslim out to destroy Christianity"

  • There are some terms that are racist when used to refer to certain groups of people but not others.  If you throw a banana peel on the field of a soccer match, most people know you're insulting the black player.  If you stretch your eyes to the side and take a team picture, most people know you're making fun of an Asian person.  Yes, it's rude to throw banana peels at people or to make funny faces at them, but it takes on a totally different character in different contexts.  So yes, I think it's safe to say that calling a black person a monkey is different than calling a white person a monkey.  Both are rude, one is racist.  Just like calling h*nkey is a racial slur when directed towards a white man, but a black man probably wouldn't take it as such.

About the birther movement: Obama provided his birth certificate a long time ago.  Hawaii officials have come out and said that it's not a forgery.  I don't understand why these people insist on continuing this claim.  If they know something went on, they should release the evidence.  What more can he do to prove this?  I mean, really?  If Mitt Romney releases his birth certificate and state officials say it's not a forgery, would people really continue to say that he's not a citizen?

Are there other allegations the birthers are making other than show your birth certificate?  Because he's done that, and I don't have the stomach to sift through all of the ridiculousness that I found on google when I looked up this issue.

<div>I agree with this wholeheartedly. No, the problem is not solved if 49% the country is gritting their teeth for years, just waiting for the current presidential term to be over. (Both Bush and Obama?). That is not a functioning democracy. Just voting someone in is only half the battle, it's natural to disagree with the gov about issues (even with the party you are a member), this is why we need to take a closer look at our system, maybe vote more by state, add more parties with public funding, maybe open it up completley and vote the big issues nationally, taking control away from the president, I don't know the answer, but I do know our current 50/50 split country is not working for either side.</div>

  • I believe they are also saying that his mother renounced her citizenship when he was a child, and might have renounced his.  Then they returned and became citizens again.  Thus he was a natural born citizen, but might not be now.  I could be mixing things up though, it's not something I pay tuns of attention to.

I'm with you, I would have been pissed because you don't throw a banana peal somewhere where people are running, people could get hurt!

<div>I think THIS is what we as a country need to be working on, coming together on. Everyone can agree things aren't working. We need to change our democracy to fit our diverse beliefs and trying to make all citizens feel heard.</div><div>
</div><div>Honestly, I think a huge start would be to get rid of the electoral college and gerrymandering and get it back to majority rules, with fair districts. Also, the country's literacy and current event interest could use some frickin' CPR...</div>
