• I don't know anyone named Polly so that is a weird assumption. I spell names how I think the should be spelled (traditionally) and if it is wrong then I will change it.
For my name, people usually say it right, although over the phone, people hear "Polly" all the damn time.  Nope, not Polly.  Holly.  No one can ever spell it, though.  It's the very typical spelling, but everyone wants to fancy it up.  Holley, Holli, I even get Holy every so often.  It's sad when I'm impressed when people do spell it right, because more often than not, it's spelled wrong.  Even in emails, with my signature in the email they are replying to.  Payadamntention, a-holes.
Posted by Holly4212011
How common is the name Polly, anyway?  FFS, I don't think I've ever met someone named Polly but I know a ton of Hollys.

Not hating on the name Polly, lol, I actually think it's a cute name.  But really.

Holy, huh?  That's funny.  I'd totally want to reply with something kinda Bible-ish.

• Holly is always my go-to spelling for Holly.
• Do people call you Holly Berry?  They do that to my sister all the time.  She's not a freaking bush.
Ski- why did you keep King, and not go back to your maiden name after the first marriage? I am sure this happens, but I have never heard of this and it is interesting.
Posted by Nickivegan
I kept King, because, I had two kids still in high school with the same last name, and it had been my name professionally and within the community for so long that is how people knew me.
• My sister kept her married name after a divorce b/c it was her sons last name.

• My name is Rebecca.  I do not like any shortened versions of the name.  Becky, Becca, Reba, etc.  Yet, people continually call me by them.  Then when I say I don't really go by that they start questioning why I don't.  Because it's my name, I don't want to!

My FI's first name is Carter and his last name is also a first name.  He constantly gets people telling him that it should be the other way around.  When he fills out forms with the boxes for first and last name, people will tell him he's filled it out wrong.

That's what I figured. <div>Have a professional name for myself with my maiden name is probably the number one reason why I didn't change my name. Also, its the reason that most "traditional" people will stop arguing over.</div>

• Apparently I have a country accent because everyone thinks my name is Jan when I talk to them on the phone. The first time I thought the person was just stupid, but I went to a bridal show last year that sold my info so now I have all kinds of mail coming to Jan Birdie.

::sigh::

Now I just say my name is Jennifer so there's no confusion.
• I know you guys are on names, but I have to bitch about this fecking cold that will.not.go.away. It got worse yesterday again and I am wondering wtf my body is up to. I'm very tired of being sick! Six mother effing weeks. And this is a post n run as we are heading out to watch girl with the dragon tattoo.

The window of the attorney I work for's office is RIGHT in front of the printer too.  I'd dance especially hard when she was on the phone.

I kept mine after my first marriage too. In fact, I didn't change it back until about a year before I remarried.
• Wow Holly that's crazy. I like my last name and people know my families last name here so I might keep it at least for work.

My friend kept her cheating-after-4months-jackass-ex-husband's last name since it was way better than her maiden name of Butts.
• Hi everyone!

I had the most generic, normal name before.  My married name is not especially difficult to pronouce, although a semi-famous actor uses the Americanized mispronunciation, so that's how everyone pronounces it when they read it.  I hate that I hear the wrong version so often I sometimes have to remind myself how it really sounds.

Also, it irks me that some Filipina actress has my name.  That only bothers me because after people see that I am not Hispanic, they then play "what kind of Asian are you?" with me and guess that I'm from the Philippines because of the actress.

• Thanks Ski and MrsBJS for explaining that to me.

I am so Irritated by the people in my building. We live in an Artists' Co-op and part of that is participating within both the building community and the outside community. Only 2 of the 11 units here (we are one of them) have done an outside community event. I don't get it. It's part of the lease. You get reduced rent to help you get started as an artist and in return you do something for the community. We have co-op training this month and I am really hoping it puts perspective into some of these people.
I might just be more irritated than I should because we actually moved here from a cheaper place, in order to participate and help get the co-op official. (We went from a 550$ rent to 700$ rent, as well as the co-op is nicer than our old place was and really needed to be filled to become incorporated.

• My FI has a Swiss last name that is frequently mispronounced in such a bad way.  It is pronounced phonetically, but I cant tell you how many times I've been with him at a doctor's appointment or gotten a telemarketer call that asks for "Mr. Fuhrer."

No, I am not marrying a Nazi, thank you very much.
• People think I misspell my own name and take it upon themselves to correct it.  Where I bought my bridal gown, she misspelled my first AND last name when she put the congratulations on facebook of the brides who had found their gowns that week.  I asked for a picture of the dress to be e-mailed it to me, spelled out my e-mail for her which has my name in it, didn't get it.  Gee, I wonder why.

</div><div>Yeah, a lot of people pronounce it "eddy." Her full name is Edith, which I really like.

• My name is spelled Kristan instead of Kristin or Kristen. I'm used to spelling my name out but it irritates the hell out of me when my name is in front of them (like in an e-mail) and they still spell it wrong. I always feel like replying with "are you unable to read?" It bothers me even more when people start spelling it as "Christen". My "favourite" is when people called my Christian, Kristine, etc.,

My last name is mispronounced all the time too. When telemarketers call and start getting pushy with me I tell them to learn how to pronounce my name (both first and last) if they actually want to sell me something. But that's only after they don't take no for an answer.
