    Posted by kjhowd[/QUOTE]

It it unrealistic to think that they might have a significant percentage of customers who speak other languages? I see you're in the Boston area, but I don't know what the make-up of places where your bank has branches is like. I'm not fighting with you on this one - although I obviously do not mind pressing 1 - just imagining that if your bank has done it, they probably find it helps customers. If it didn't, and they were just wasting money on having Spanish-speaking operators standing by at all times, I can't imagine they would continue spending money on it.

Any, do you mean basic grammar like than vs. then?

Her point about what you do when faced with native English speakers who have speaking problems stands. If you "just can't understand" someone who's had a stroke, do you transfer them to someone who's fluent in stroke-ese or do you make an effort because you realize it would be really rude to say "I'm sorry, I don't understand you because you had a stroke"?

And I really do think it's convenient that although your original opinion referred to people who aren't fluent, as soon as people brought up what an idiotic thing that was to say, now it's "well I just meant people who speak no English at all so that I really don't understand anything they say, and it's not my fault."

Exactly.  I've heard that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn and speak fluently because of the slang and ebonics and what not.  Just look at how many people on these boards say things wrong or have poor spelling and grammar on a daily basis.  How can you ever expect someone to come here and speak fluent english.  Someone from Italy could have studied English their whole lives, and come to America and have abosoutely no idea what someone meant when they said, "Whaddya up to?"  I know I say that all the time.  They would probably be looking at the sky in seach of something.

  • Speaking of the difficulties in the English language, who knows how to pronounce my screenname without googling?
  • I'm obviously having a hard time explaining myself so I think I will state what I am trying to say and leave it at that:

    1. If you live in a country you should speak the language of that country.

    2. Having an accent and not speaking English are two completely different things. As is having a mental disability that effects your speaking.

    3. If I cannot understand someone than I will do my best to get them to someone who can, but I will not spend 20 minutes trying to decipher "I want the blue one" and will explain that I cannot understand them.

    4. I do not expect people to know English if I was visiting Germany or Mexico, and as such I would never travel to any country without having a grasp on the language.

    5. I would never turn away from someone in need based solely on the fact that don't speak English

    6. Calm down on the than/then thing it's called a mistake and you obviously were able to understand what I was saying.

I am, probably forgetting something but I don't really think it matters to anyone anyways.

My coworker wants his son to go do an English teaching program in Korea. Coworker is half-Korean and his mother has hosted some Korean exchange students in the US and knows a family who said he could stay with them. I also have a friend who's there now teaching English, and I know people who have done the same in China and Thailand. It seems like an awesome experience.

  • and, if you think murderers can't be rehabilitated, then why do you think they'd feel remorse for what they've done?

I also think the prison system is fuucked. there should be two systems--one for the pot dealers and car thiefs and whatnot, and another for violent offenders. and the violent offenders prison should not have any of the niceties they have now.

    1. I'll calm down about you butchering the lanugage you demand that everyone learn once YOU learn it.

    2. "I want the blue one" is not a difficult phrase. The way you were talking about not being able to understand customers who call you, I was under the impression that you worked at NASA rather than Ikea.

    3. I'm glad you won't travel to other countries without learning the lanugage first. Since all other languages are beneath you, you obviously won't take the time to learn them and therefore will be forced to stay in America the rest of your life. That's actually great for us though, because we really don't need you running around being the poster child for ignorant Americans.
