That's utter bullshit.  I live in Sweden.  Was I supposed to learn Swedish in the 2 months I had before we moved here?  How about Italy?  You can take your opinion and shove it.  I've  learned a bit of Italian, but am no means fluent.  I couldn't even wotk there.  I HATE it when people get all high and mighty about the language.
In Response to Re: Unpopular Opinions : There are still entire communities in South LA (they're becoming more and more rare, but they still exist) where only Cajun (Acadian) French is spoken. My aunt's grandparents didn't speak a lick of English and lived in the US their entire lives.
    Posted by laurenclaire1386
I would totally believe that. Actually, Iowa banned the speaking of German during WWI, but up until then (so, like, 1918) there were communities that had been settled in the 1840s/1850s where the public schools conducted all their classes in German.

There was definitely a highly xenophobic attitude in the US from around WWI to about the 1960s, though. Immigration was limited during the 1950s. Anyone who came to the US probably DID try to learn English quickly during that time to avoid persecution. I have a few friends with one Asian parent who refused to teach their children their native language. Because growing up in places like Texas or Georgia in the 60s and 70s and being half-asian, they were already different enough.

What about the high level of rape and other violence in prison? I think that's a big problem. Obviously, many homeless are subjected to violence, but I'm not sure if it's to the level of that in prison.

  • I have had some Spanish speaking clients who CAN in fact speak English, but due to the subject matter, were more comfortable (and could express themselves better) in Spanish.  I am able to give them better service when they can explain to me the extent of medical issues, etc. they are facing than if they just said it in a few English phrases that don't as thoroughly express what is happening.
  • I went to visit a local jail (not prison) with one of my college classes a few years ago, and the experience was not pleasant at all. When you actually see in your face the living conditions and experience the coldness of it all, its not good. Honestly I got home after being there for a few hours and felt really really bad. Like sat in my dining room looking around not doing anything because my mind was racing bad.

Its not a cake walk. At all. And I was only there for a few hours.

  • There are a lot of communities in this country that speak different languages. My FI lived in an area that only spoke Korean. He didn't learn English until he started watching cartoons and went to Kindergarten. He would never have learned if it hadn't been for those two things. He had to teach his parents English. This doesn't mean he isn't American, maybe it means he is more cultured than "some people".

I toured a juvenile detention center in high school, and it made me so sad. I thought of Christmases and birthdays going uncelebrated and not getting to see/talk to loved ones whenever I wanted. It was cold, and I know that those kids must have felt very alone.

He was actually pretty close. It still sounded a little contrived to me, but that's only because I know looooots of people with that accent. But yeah, he did an alright job of it. That's another stereotype of Louisiana: we're not all Cajun. Basically, if you're in the northern half of the state, you're not gonna run across many Cajun accents. It's much more prevalent in the southern half of the state.

  • I didn't express myself well, but for God's sake.  Does anyone in the US realize that MOST of the world speaks more than one language??  All Italians are required to take another language throughout their schooling.  Scandinavians are required to take English from kindergarten on.  Same with the Netherlands.  That's just Europe, ffs.

Why is it everyone has to speak ENGLISH?? Why can't Americans get off their lazy asses and learn another language too?!
Kjhowd, I'm curious: do you know that other countries also have "for [country language] press 1?" If I call companies that have clients from different backgrounds (like the Chilean airline, for example), I am often given the option to speak to someone in English. I understand the opinion that since people who live in the US should learn English, we shouldn't need to press something for English, but I also think that it's perfectly realistic for businesses to want to serve their customers as well as possible and to realize that some of their customers - even if they are learning or speak decent English - are more comfortable doing business in another language.
    Posted by emilyinchile
I totally agree that businesses should offer options, particularly international businesses.  However, my bank for example, is a small bank with branches only in my area.  I don't necessarily think its unreasonable for me to not have to press 1 for English when calling them.

This is a very sticky subject - I don't say that I have all the answers.  I think I sometimes just get very very frustrated by it all.  I have no qualms about talking to, assisting or helping ESL people at all.  I am certainly not racist as someone suggested that anyone who has probelm with non-English speakers or persons with accents might be.

Everyone who has come to this country over the last 200+ years was an immigrant or a refugee; but they made an effort to learn the language and become part of the melting pot.  We no longer have a melting pot - we're just little versions of other countries now.  It always comes across to me that people aren't even encouraged to learn the language (as they would be elsewhere), we just say ok...everything will be put into 25 different languages.

  • I can barely keep up with this thread, but my opinion (probably not unpopular) is that people who learn English as a second language usually speak it better than people who grew up speaking it. They may have accents and be hard to understand, but it's not an easy language to learn. A ton of people who speak it as a first language can barely grasp basic grammar.

Why do you think you are better than other people and won't give them the time of day because they don't speak perfect English.

Do you do this to people that have had a stroke or ar mentally challenged and don't speak perfect enough for you.
