I watch Hoarders sometimes and start to get a little nuts. I start surreptitiously cleaning off the coffee table during commercial breaks, and then bust out the stick-vac to clean the inside of the heat registers. H says I should watch it all the time so that the house would never get dirty, but I think I'd have to be medicated. I just can't handle seeing that kind of mess.
The only pets that I really, really don't understand are the ones that could actually seriously hurt you. I remember hearing about a guy on the news who had gotten like 3 Komodo dragons and the ended up killing him.
Gah, celles, that pic is adorable. I saw that Hoarders episode and it was one of the few where I truly felt bad for the hoarder. He was just so lost and sad, and the fact that he was so willing to participate (unlike the ones who scream and pitch a fit) made it worse. I actually got mad at the dude who was all, look at the dead/dying rat! You did this! Look at him! Be ashamed of yourself!
OK, it wasn't that bad, but that's how it felt.
The only time I've been cool with roaches was in Ecuador. It was more like, ok we're in their space so this time we are the invaders. But those fvckers were bigger than my hand and I still let out little-girl shrieks when I saw them (or *shudder* stepped on one barefoot).

Thanks guys It was my first applique project and it was a lot of fun. You just cut out all the different pieces then do the iron on fuse stuff, iron it to the fabric and stitch around the outside. Time consuming but fun. I wanted to put a cute quote on it, "It takes courage to grow up and become who you are" ( I love E.E Cummings) but it was too hard so I just did his name.
I showed it to Troy when I finished it, I was super proud of myself for putting the little hearts on the left side (where humans are) and he goes um babe, birds are the only animals whose hearts are actually in the center of their chests. DAMNIT!
I can't watch Hoarders, it makes me anxious. It both fascinates and disgusts me at the same time. Then I start wondering which of my neighbors are potential hoarders.
And FTR, I don't judge people for having rats as pets, I just don't get the attraction. I also don't like cats (for my own reasons), but I don't judge people for having them as pets either. To each their own.

My grandpa's family is like that. Some of them live in Oregon but one of his brothers lives in Santa Barbara. My grandparents went to visit them once and they brought their shi tzu with and their animals (dogs, cats, pigs, horses, sheep, whatever) came and went as they pleased all over their yard and house. My grandma can't see well but would still pick fleas off her dog. One day a couple months after this visit to the funny farm, she noticed that the dog had a lot of moles she'd never noticed before. Upon further inspection - they were not moles. They were ticks. And the ticks had infested their house.

I saw a hawk take a kitten once when I was a kid. That was pretty traumatic, lol.
Spiders are my biggest irrational fear. I don't have any partilcular issue with them existing, but I don't like them AT.ALL. and wish they wouldn't be where I am, ever.
Case in point: about a week ago, I got up in the night to get a drink. I went into the kitchen and didn't turn on the light, but when I walked toward the cabinet to get a glass, I felt something brush up against my face. I froze, backed up and flicked on the light only to see a spider hanging from the ceiling fan. A big spider. I may have woken up the neighbours with my screaming.
I made H put it in a cup and throw it outside. I don't want to kill them, but I don't want them sneaking up on me in the night (or the day, for that matter).

This is me, too! I don't mind spiders, beetles, etc. when they're alive, but dead ones freak me the hell out. It's the (real or imagined) crunch *shudder* they make when they're sqaushed that I can't handle, and then the dried out husks that they become. I always catch them and set them free outside so I don't have to deal with it, if my cat can't be bothered to do the job.
Meanwhile, H skewers them with an Irish longsword. Gah.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: opinions : I had a friend in elementary school that i always knew had a weird family, but looking back I think they were on their way to animal hoarding. She lived across the street, well across the gravel road and had chickens, a potbelly pig and rabbits LIVING IN THEIR HOUSE. Like wtf?

My grandpa's family is like that. Some of them live in Oregon but one of his brothers lives in Santa Barbara. My grandparents went to visit them once and they brought their shi tzu with and their animals (dogs, cats, pigs, horses, sheep, whatever) came and went as they pleased all over their yard and house. My grandma can't see well but would still pick fleas off her dog. One day a couple months after this visit to the funny farm, she noticed that the dog had a lot of moles she'd never noticed before. Upon further inspection - they were not moles. They were ticks. And the ticks had infested their house.
[QUOTE]In Response to Re: opinions : I would have been so happy to go through life never knowing there were people who collect that in bottles. That's disgusting, I really want to know what breaks in a persons mind to make them want to do this.

<div>I've been reading an interesting book called "Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding and the Meaning of Stuff". It's fascinating. I am very intrigued by anything pyschological/socially constructed. It's quite enlightening and it's written in case studies so you can pick it up when you have time.</div>
Heh. AATB - I'm always like, "if we don't stay on top of these papers, they'll take over the house!" and there are about 4 loose leaves of paper on a table...

I'm irrational, but I can own it. Sometimes...
This cockroach talk is freaking me out. I think I have some kind of cockroach-related PTSD. Those things were on my bedroom walls in the night. They do NOT belong there.

[QUOTE]Our office has had mice issues for over a year. I feel bad for all the mice we catch. They're so little and I think they're pretty cute. I found a dead one right next to my desk once. It was squished and my CW's kept telling my I stomped it with my heels. They still haven't fessed up, but I know they took it from one of the traps and planted it at my desk. They think they are soooo funny.

My mom had a friend who had a mouse problem, and they used the 'catch it alive' traps. When they got it, they took it to a field and carefully released it onto the ground, where it took off running. It got about 5 feet away when a hawk swooped down and grabbed it. Life is pretty rough for mice weather they are inside or out!

Omg celles :( I always get so sad watching those ones. I have no idea what place a person must be in mentally to get to that point.

I'll have to buy that, thanks for the tip. I think one of my textbooks has a chapter on hoarding too, I'll have to look it up when I'm feeling less lazy.

I saw a hawk take a kitten once when I was a kid. That was pretty traumatic, lol.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: opinions : I can't kill roaches in my house by stepping on them. The cracking and popping seriously just grosses me the eff out. I have to either spray them with poison, or go get my dog or FI to kill them. I can't handle it. Now spiders, on the other hand, I'll capture and put back outside. They don't bother me at all.

I'm so glad you posted this. I was just about to go to the kitchen and make myself a big sandwich (which is a big diet violation!) and now I don't want it anymore.

I didn't do it on purpose. It was more like in the middle of the night when I had to walk outside to the bathroom, and forgott o put on my shoes. Or in the shower when they swooped in and I didn't know it.

Gah.
