Theres a murder trial going on with something of a publication ban so I have no idea the details but I saw on the news yesterday that a lot of the details have made their way to twitter and its been reported on the news how she died, etc etc. It was a little freaking girl, I dont think any of us, regardless of how curious people may be, should be privy to the details of the case like that. Even if it wasnt a little girl, I would feel this way. Isnt it enough knowing the person died and who did it? Do we really need more details than that???

    Posted by AllAboutTheBenjamin
I actually slightly kind of agree with that guy. I understand why theaters do it, since they don't really make any money off tickets for the first two weeks of a showing, but still. $9 for a bag of popcorn is not ok. I can get a beer at an NFL stadium for $9.
Also- with this whole Kony thing.  Its just going to be like the AIDS thing in Africa.  People are going to raise a fucking shiiton of money that is not going to help a damn thing.  Hundreds of millions of dollars have been raised for AIDS in Africa and the infection rate is still climbing.  Half the continent has it.  If hundreds of millions of dollars cant convince people to wear a condom and to stop raping babies to cure themselves, then I dont know what else can.
    Posted by Blueyed228
I agree. It also sometimes pisses me off when so much money is raised for other countries when we can't even fix the shiit that's wrong with our own. In contrast to how emotionally dead inside this may make me appear, I listen to Disney music every day because it lifts my spirits.

And along with what Alli said - I hate when people say "eleventy." I think it's the word itself, not the connotation. The word just sounds stupid.

you dont have that there? I see it all the time here for high profile cases atleast. Im not 100% on it but I think the media cant be inside during while court is in session or details arent allowed to be made public or something. I just think somethings should be kept in the courts and to the families.
  • I was talking politics with AATB last night and she was telling me that in some states you dont have to register to vote.  So basically Dems get to vote in the Rep primary.  I dont think thats fair.  I think you should have to be declared as either Rep, Dem, or Ind, and you should only be allowed to vote in your own primary.

  • I don't watch the news.  I don't read the newspaper.  I check it out online when I feel like a dose of news, and I listen to some of it on the radio.  I don't feel uninformed, and even when I am sometimes uninformed on something going on, I don't care a whole lot.

I don't give money to charities, and I never will.  I donate my time to local organizations I want to support, and I give goods if I give at all (food for the food shelf, toys/paper goods/food/litter to our local animal shelter, etc).  I don't trust charities to do with my money what they say they will or what I want them to do, so I give things that are harder to misuse.  And I sort of judge people who give blindly and/or make other people feel b ad for not giving monetary donations to charity.  What I do with my money is my business, and just because I don't fork over a check doesn't mean I'm not helping in another way.  BUT even if I wasn't helping in another way, it's none of your goddamn business.

Really? This seems rather unfair since Reps don't get to vote for a Dem candidate since he's essentially chosen already (presidential race obviously).

I guess basically: it doesn't seem to be helping most Indian people. I get that they want to hold on to their culture, but I see a lot of negatives: high poverty, alcoholism, drug addiciton, teenage pregnancy, low graduation rates, etc etc. and I think there are ways to retain your culture without being having a reservation.

I also do not like the separate policing systems they have. It has been my experience that they are not held as accountable in those systems vs what they would have if they were not in a tribal court system.

It's unfair that it happens. I agree with you. Sure someone could run against Obama, but they should probably step up pretty soon. And the likelihood of someone else being selected as the Dem candidate is pretty low.

I'm not trying to pretend I am an expert at it or anything- but since I lived on one for 18 years- there are a lot of things that bother me. For sure it would have an impact on the justice system part of it, and to be honest I am not sure about the impact of poverty. I would hope that it would encourage more people to leave the reservation (for schooling, for better jobs) as they don't have the same benefits to living there.

It is just really depressing to hear that the little kids growing up on the reservation have no bigger aspirations for themselves than to work at the casino when they grow up beecause it is what their parents do. It is a cycle.
  • Is there a "time limit" for lack of better term on reservations? Or essentailly will they be around forever?

  • I dont have an issue with keeping the land for them and even some college scholarship opportunities for awhile until they as a group get on their feet, but the other reparations I dont like.  My ancestors were not here yet when the settlers took the land from them, I shouldnt have to pay for their mistakes with my tax dollars.

I also wonder if we are the only country who does this to groups that were treated poorly here.  Does Germany give out lifetime reparations for the Jewish people that live there?

  • Kate, I can kind of see some of your points about the reservations, especially about being able to keep your culture alive regardless of whether or not you live on a reservation. I don't have a problem with their justice system though.

My question would be, what about their land? Let's say reservations were abolished today - who gets the land? Tribes have to fight tooth and nail to keep what's theirs, let alone get something back (like uncovered artifacts), so I wonder what the impact would be.

Can someone explain to me why natives (god, I dont know how to word that, sorry) get all sorts of exceptions when throughout history people have been put upon by other nations or countries. Shouldnt everyone get similar exceptions by that logic? I mean, when I worked at a retail store, I had to go through this huge process to knock tax off peoples purchase if they had a native card. Why???? I dont get WHY.
