Yeah we have four indian reservations in ND.  I know they get aid to a small degree, but none of them say they get thousands of dollars to go to college.

It's an enormous part of the Fighting Sioux nickname debate at my alma mater.  People (stupidly) say "Well, if you're going to take away the nickname, don't give the Natives free money to go to college."  Then the Natives say "Uh, we don't get free money to go to college.  We have student loans like everyone else."

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Unpop ops/flameable confessions : I agree with Adamar, but I think that a way to combat the issue would be to try and teach students what it means when they take out a loan. So many students don't know the difference between subsidized and unsubsidized loans, what it means to default, etc. There is this massive misunderstanding that a loan is just "free money" and as students gain a better understanding of how loans work they realize they may have screwed themselves earlier in their education.

I think you are correct. I know friends of mine who are partially Indian and they had their tuition paid for (not at every college though).

I guess it also bugged me that they had a few open spots for anyone of Native American descent for the professional pharmacy program. All they would have to do would be to maintain the minimum requirements to get entry into the pharmacy program. Everyone else had to fight for their admission, with much higher test scores/grades.

We do loan counseling too - it's required before a student can even sit in class at our school.  It reviews their rights and responsibilities and makes sure they understand that they will be expected to pay back any loans they take out. We also have our FA director do a presentation in class.

I feel like the resources are there to explain everything, but it requires the student putting in some time to see what they're getting into. And by the time you get to college, you are an adult that should be able to educate yourself on what your loan entails. I can't imagine getting out of school and not being aware that you even took out a loan.

  • I agree with removing the race line. But I said it last time... my unpop op is that affirmative action is racist. Or bias or whatever. It's providing different options/treatment based soley on race.

Another unpop op: there is no such thing as reverse racism. Racism is racism.
  • Also, the state that the Native American people are in right now makes me think we are not doing them any favors with all of this stuff.

[QUOTE]I agree with removing the race line. But I said it last time... my unpop op is that affirmative action is racist. Or bias or whatever. It's providing different options/treatment based soley on race. Another unpop op: there is no such thing as reverse racism. Racism is racism.

Agree with all this. I dislike when people are refering to the fact that racism is "reversed" in the sense a minority is hating on a majority. I do not care if you a one strong or 10 million, hate is hate man.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Unpop ops/flameable confessions : How did you not know where the money was coming from?  I've had to fill out the loan form every year and put in how much money I need.

<div>I think it was partially my own ignorance (no one in my family had ever been to college, so even my mom couldn't help me), and the financial aide counselor not really caring. She pretty much would put forms in front of me and have me sign. In my mind, I was thinking, "Oh my gosh, I get to go to college." I had a scholarship that covered a lot of my tuition, so when she and I would meet, I'd be signing forms for that, too. She didn't explain real well, and I didn't ask. If I had had a mandatory class or something, I think I would have paid more attention.</div><div>
</div><div>ETA: I didn't really know the kind of questions to ask that would have helped me understand. I know that sounds really ignorant, but I really was naive.</div>

Gotcha.  The financial aid people barely do anything at my school, so I have to read everything and stay on top of them to make sure I get my money.  I don't have any scholarships, so I pretty know everything I sign is for a loan.
