  • I can't WAIT for someone to say something inappropriate to my face so I can whip otu the line "Why would you say that?". I just want to make them as uncomfortable as possible.

Oh I know, It's pretty much the cheapest thing around here too. I'd have to go pretty far to find a BK.
  • I've really lost some respect for you here Andy.  I'm really glad you're the picture of health and can so easily judge others.

FWIW, I know skinny people who are far less healthy than I am.  You would look at me and think "Morbily obese, biggest loser" whatever, but I have excellent blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.  My charts minus my weight read like any other healthy 32 year old.

I don't at all believe that weight is the only indicator of your health.  I am far from a size 2 and I have more than my share of junk in the trunk.  Even when I was in the best shape of my life in high school and playing sports everyday year round, I was still always at least a size 12.  Weight =/= unhealthy automatically.  And when I'm talking about "morbidly obese" I'm talking about the people who need to use a cane to walk because of their weight, or need a handicapped parking permit because they can't make the walk from the lot to the store without pain and difficulty breathing.

I understand not everyone wants to change, but I find it hard to believe people like that are happy with their health.

  • Andy, stupid question, how tall are you again? I'm just trying to picture you as a size 16. I know a lot of girls here are on the size 16 couch, myself included, but I'm 5'11 and there are other girls who are 5'4 and we look totally different at the clothing same size. I'm just trying to picture a size 16 you in my head.
  • No, I think we all get what you're saying. But I think we (at least I), think it's none of your damn business what we eat. Unless we're shoving it down your throat, don't presume to know what we want, think or feel about our weight-over weight or 'morbidly obese'.

I think a really big disconnect between what I am saying and what some of you are attacking is overweight vs. mordibly obese (or whatever term you think is more accurate).  I'm talking about a weight that interferes with a person's quality of life and that is dangerous - not somebody who has a normal healthy weight but is not a size 2.
    Posted by andy71781
I totally get it. But there are a multitude of cultural issues at stake. It's not just telling people who are morbidly obese to drop the pie, fatty. Obesity is a serious issue. I completely agree. But it will involve solutions such as completely changing farm subsidies, overhauling the food industry, overhauling school lunches, community educaton and outreach, and attempts to fix issues of poverty. Judging a fat person for being fat is almost like victim-blaming. You wouldn't judge an alcoholic for having a disease or an anorexic for having a disease, but someone who is extremely overweight probably didn't get there from splurging on a buffet once a month. It's likely going to be genetics, possibly medication, and probably some sort of eating disorder which can't be solved by pointing out they are fat and eating a lot. It's not hard to know you're eating a lot.

  • Jumping onto the comments about people saying things about your weight in regards to getting married from a page or so back - One of the first things my FMIL told my FI after he proposed (you know besides the congrats we love Jess) was "You better lose some weight before the wedding". Really nice FMIL.

Also, I know this is on the opposite side of being obese but I'm considered underweight by BMI (which I don't agree with anyway) and people automatically assume I'm anorexic. I never have been. I've always been this size.

Work makes me kinda slow so sorry if you've already moved on.

what annoys me the most is people who congratulate themselves on being thin, like genetics have nothing to do with it. I have to turn myself inside out just to lose ten pounds. I have skinny friends who eat more than I do. meh.
    Posted by laladypoet
I have worked my ass off (well, really my saddle bags and gut) over the last 8 weeks to lose 10 pounds.  There is a lot of obesity in my family so it just doesn't "melt" off.  It is frustrating to see people not have to work as hard because they are blessed with high metabolisms.

In all seriousness, I haven't had cake balls, nachos or wine in a long time.  I also run like crazy.  I decided to do this and my FI is on board and doing it too so it helps to have a support system.

In Response to Re: FFF : I completely agree with this, but add in things like portion size, eating habits learned in childhood which are hard to break, the issues many have feeling "full" at an appropriate time. Not to mention things outside the control of many, like food additives and ingredients which have only been around a few decades and which we don't understand the effects of quite yet. Things like corn-fed beef being out of whack with Omega-6 acids, HFCS, etc.

Exactly.  I was really surprised when I went to a nutritionist to ask about losing weight and she told me that I needed to eat MORE.  I was like "say huh wha?" but then she explained that I needed to eat more but not all in 1-3 meals (like I was doing before Embarassed).  I think you're right about the breaking habits since childhood thing, that has been one of the hardest things for me.

  • I know lots of people that have to work at it to stay thin. those aren't who I was talking about. :)
  • Andy, even if you're only talking about somebody who would require the fire department, a special gurney, and a special ambulance or helicopter to get them out of their house and to the hospital if they had a heart attack, it's still kinda douchey the WAY you've expressed it.

It's a tough topic.  It's one that is judged from most directions everyday, all day, consciously or unconsciously, by most people.  It's one that fuels opinion wars regularly on how/why/resolutions.  I mean, a school district in Chicago banned kids from bringing a packed lunch unless they have a doctor's note requiring it for a special diet/medical condition.  BECAUSE THE SCHOOL JUDGES PARENTS WHO GIVE THEIR KIDS COOKIES, EVER.  But, what the kids bring to lunch isn't the whole story, and who has the right to dictate to parents what they can feed their kids?  And since when are school lunches healthy and tasty examples to live by?

Anyway.  My point is that you can't make it sound better at this point.  Regardless of what you really mean/think/judge.

  • Smokey, you're making me sad.  I was really looking forward to the scotch and nachos.

I'm the same way weight-wise, though.  I have to work my ASS off to lose a few pounds, and my best friend eats candy all day and doesn't gain an ounce.  It is really frustrating.  Shea is really supportive of my diet and exercise, though, so that helps.

  • Well, it's hard to respect someone who I feel has an ignorant opinion.  It's not like you're backing down on it, even after arguments.

Anyway, I think the biggest judgers of fat people are formerly fat people.  Which is so ridiculous.

I think respect is based on opinions, especially in a message board setting, where all we have is words. I don't see how that's a bit much.
  • Manda and GA, that makes sense to me. I love food too, and I actually wonder what I will do when my metabolism slows down (because Lala, my current size is all genetics, my dad was super skinny when he was my age). I'll have to find the balance that works for me between vanity/health and love of good food.

Mery, I agree with everything you just said except one part. I think people judge anorexic/otherwise skinny people all the time. A lot of people think it's fine to say "just eat a hamburger" to someone skinny when they would be up in arms if you said "just don't eat a hamburger" to someone who is overweight.

Just a random post from someone who contributed NOTHING to the talk but has followed along the whole time.

I personally wish I didn't have such a damn skewed perspective on my own weight. I am totally embarassed to admit that I would love to be sickly skinny. I only hold myself to horrible standards though.
