Have you seen this dad?

http://www.litefm.com/cc-common/mainheadlines3.html?feed=421220&article=9738000

CN: Daughter disrespects parents on FB.  Dad makes video to her in response to it.  Pretty freaking awesome if you ask me.

  • Yeah, it's being talked about a lot on TB.  Some chicks over there are crazy calling him the worst dad EVAR!!!11

    I like it.

  • I think it's freaking fantastic.  I can't say I would have wasted a laptop like that, but whatever you want to do to teach your kid a lesson that isn't acutally hurting them.
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • It was great until he shot the laptop.  What a waste.  If he really wanted to not allow her to use it, he should have donated it to a local shelter or something.  He himself said how much money and time he put into it.

  • I like it - some people are saying it's hypocritical for him to put it on YouTube...but I dont think it is. She was talking shiit about his family on the internet and trying to hide it from him - he put it out there and said "I know you're talking shiit and this is what's happening now - you need to show a little respect."

I don't agree with the gun stuff - that's just NMS.
  • He is absolutely ridiculous. Let's rant about our kids using the Internet inappropriately by using the Internet inappropriately! Because teenage kids should never rant about their parents ever!!! Listen to me or I'll shoot your shiit! Yeah, really great parenting..

Go Dad!  Seriously, that's ridiculous that she thought she could get away with it, or that others think what she did doesn't deserve that kind of punishment.  He didn't hurt her, he killed her laptop.  Props to him.  I think that's awesome.  Although I also don't agree with the guns.  I probably would have thrown it in a fit.  That would be more fun and less crazy.

  • fishy, I love you, I'm trying to understand what you mean by using the internet inappropriately? Because it was a YouTube video? Because of the gun?
  • I watched this last night.  When I saw the laptop, I figured he was going to break it.  When I saw the gun, my jaw dropped.

I'm really glad I grew up in the pre-FB age.  My father would have been LIVID if I had done something like this (he was upset when my grown sister posted inappropriate pictures -- not nudity, but still, embarrassing drunk pictures -- on FB, and he found them).  But he would never have made it public.  He wouldn't have broken my computer (and my dad is an NRA member with guns).  His reaction would have been to privately upbraid me (and that would have sucked enough, let me tell you), ground me for pretty much eternity, and give my computer away to someone else who needed one.

  • The gun thing is NMS, and I also think it's a bit hypocritical. My dad was a very creative punisher, and I think he could have gotten a better message across without shooting anything.

Hey, Fish, who were you talking to in the party line thread last night?
  • I can just imagine how crushed he would be when he found a blocked letter to him on facebook that everyone could see.

  • And I'm trying to understand why I have to explain why this video is ten thousand kinds of wrong. Don't preface it with fish I love you, it's condescending, and quite frankly, pisses me off.

The gun isn't his point, IMO. Shooting the laptop is the icing on the cake, to me. He feels like he wasted his time and she's disrespecting him. So he said "okay, fuuck the laptop then"<div>
</div><div>I dont think he was saying "I like to shoot your stuff when you're bad" She doesn't deserve the laptop if she's going to disrespect him like that. </div>
  • Am I speaking with rational adults here? What's wrong with you people?

  • Like I said, i could have done without the shooting of the laptop, as he could have destroyed the laptop in other ways if that's what he wanted to do.

But I still like the video and what he did.  If that makes me a moron to some people, so be it.  People disagree over parenting styles all the time.  He said he tried a different way last time, and clearly that didn't work.  Kids now don't understand the repurcussions of putting things on the internet, let alone their actions in general.  And yes, I think putting it on her Facebook to show all of her friends who thought her rebellion was sooo cool was also okay.

Obviously I know a lot of people are going to have differing opinions on this, as they do with any and all things related to raising a kid.

I'm sorry, It was a way of saying "i'm not mad and I'm trying to understand what you mean because I dont get it" it wasn't being condescending. I apologize.<div>
</div><div>You dont HAVE to explain it - but I dont understand the problem (other than the gun) - so, for you change my mind or make me think differently, I'm going to need an explanation. If you don't care to change my mind, then don't explain.</div><div>
    </div><div>I'm sorry if I'm pissing you off, I legitimately don't understand.</div>
  • I think an adult can get their message across without going public like that.  My father commanded respect, and didn't need to publically humiliate me or destroy my property to do that.

I agree that what the daughter did was heinous and disrespectful and mortifying to her parents.  But she's a teenager -- irrational, stupid, emotional, etc.  A father shouldn't need to resort to a public display of punishment to get his point across.

    I think it's inappropriate.

ETA: I hit post too soon.

My father would never publicly humiliate me. Ever. Sure, he might have embarrassed me while growing up, but he would never humiliate me. I was not a well-behaved teenager, and he would have had plenty of opportunities to do something like this, but he didn't.

The gun thing really bothers me, but I think that's mostly because I'm generally anti-gun. I also think it's heinous to shoot something in anger. My father would have hidden or given away the computer, not destroyed it like that. To me, guns + anger = poor decision making.
  • I guess, in my mind, he'd tried to do it not publicly, like he said, she was grounded before for the same thing. It seems to me like he's kind of at the point where he feels like he's tried everything?

First he read her little tirade that she posted on FB that she'd blocked from him.  He found it when he was upgrading the software on her computer.  She was bitching about having to do chores and was really being a huge disrespecful brat.  He addressed her points and told her that she'd been warned and punished for something like this recently, and the last time he took her laptop away from her for 3 months.  This time, he felt so disrespected that he took it away forever, by shooting it.

I mean, shooting it was super overkill.  I think it would have been better to give it to someone who needed it, but I agree with taking it away from her until college.

  • I think it's hilarious. The girl sounds like a brat. Poor girl, she has to wipe off the countertops and sweep the floors and get up early for school. Such a hard life. She deserves having her laptop destroyed for her incredibly rude and disrespectful post and stuck-up attitude.

I don't understand why people get so up in arms about him destroying it or using a gun. But apparently I'm a moron, so what do I know.
  • I don't think "what our parents would do" is really a rational comparison though.  We (well some of us) weren't teenagers during the world of social networking.  I can guarantee you my dad wouldn't have done this because he can barely buy books for his Kindle online, and he definitely couldn't make a video and post it on youtube or Facebook.  But break something that he paid for that I was using to outright disrespect him?  Yep, I could see him doing that.
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • I really don't see the big deal. Clearly this girl has done something like this before. Grounding her didn't work. Could he have done something more appropriate with the laptop than shooting it? Probably, but calling her out on the shiit she puts out there for people to see doesn't scream BAD PARENTING to me. JMHO.

  • If my points on your Facebook wall don't make sense, then I've got nothing and I'll just have to judge you for thinking this is awesome and you'll have to judge me for thinking he is a hypocritical, lazy parent who is only saying that if you piss me off and don't listen to me I'll shoot your stuff. For doing something totally age appropriate. If you think that's ok, then that's your own deal. Violence and guns are the answer. Got it. He totally couldn't have made a point any other way. Got it.

  • When I was disrespectful I had to weed the garden. Oh wait...she things that's slavery.

  • Yeah simple progression of parenting when TEENAGERS don't listen. 1. Ground you 2. Make viral you tube video and shoot your lap top. This douchebag doesn't deserve any more of my energy. I'm really pumped so many of you think that shooting things when you don't get your way is ok. Astonishing, actually.

  • I'm trying to figure out where I said guns are the answer? I'm pretty sure I said it's NOT something I agree with.

And like I said, it seems to me that he's tried to make his point another way - by grounding her before.

    I guess I just don't understand and I'm sorry.
